Wymsey Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 Welcome back to the championship Wigan Good; I do doubt they'll be an automatic promotion contender imo.
Blanesta Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 Fair play to them for winning the FA cup, It's a pretty good consolation prize.
AKCJ Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 Think Wigan will lose their gaffer and also the likes of Kone, McCarthy, McAthur and McManaman.
Fox in the North Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 Think Wigan will lose their gaffer and also the likes of Kone, McCarthy, McAthur and McManaman. And Maloney.. Absolute shame that those two key games ended up being put so close together because of the europa league final, apparently no other game can play on the same day or something along those lines.
Corky Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 Wigan have had a great run in the Premier League, 8 years for a tiny club is a remarkable achievement. The FA Cup will be something they can treasure forever, and they'll probably return soon.
Tielemans63 Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 I think they'd staked almost everything in beating Swansea last week - writing was on the wall after that. What a strange week for them. Surely it's never happened before that a team has won the FA cup and been relegated in the space of 4 days.
Fox92 Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 No Wigan. Didn't want then to get relegated, but I suppose it's another away day next year. Only been there once.
Jaspa Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 Hated Wigan all these years, and then I finally start to warm to them this season and they go down. Can see a large proportion of their playing staff staying, but Martinez will surely leave, making them vunerable in our League
Kitchandro Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 I think they'd staked almost everything in beating Swansea last week - writing was on the wall after that. What a strange week for them. Surely it's never happened before that a team has won the FA cup and been relegated in the space of 4 days. It's never even happened in the same season, though we got relegated a few days after losing the final I think. It's a bit ironic that this is probably Wigan's most entertaining and at times best team, yet it's the one that's gone down. They're certainly one of the better teams to have been relegated from the top flight, but you just can't defend like that. Similar to Blackpool. What was Scharner doing all night? The thing that annoys me is people will use this as another excuse not to try in the FA Cup. But to be quite honest, any Wigan fan who would rather stay in the Premier League than win the FA Cup is bonkers. They can never have that taken away from them, whereas they were always going to go down eventually. They've done something a lot of medium sized clubs never do, they've got something to show for their time in the top flight. That's more important than being there IMO. It's a shame they've gone down, they've been a plucky club who have won over a lot of people who were probably fed up with them 3 or 4 seasons ago. But I don't feel sorry for them, I'd do anything to swap our season with theirs, let alone the last 8. I can't see them bouncing straight back, they'll be stripped of their best assets and small clubs tend not to come straight back. From our point of view, it's better that they've come down that Villa or Sunderland.

They've had a wonderful day on Saturday, very disappointing tonight, but leave with a trophy, a place in Europe and that can't be taken away. You know what, their fans, on the back of an FA Cup win, might enjoy next season, they'll probably win far more games than they've done in recent years and can have a European tour, as well as defending a trophy.
Yastafox Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 So that's the excitement of the last day of the PL season gone then! No one has anything to play for bar Arsenal and Spurs!
AKCJ Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 I'd take beating Derby's record if we could break our F.A. cup hoodoo.
Guest MattP Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 I'd take beating Derby's record if we could break our F.A. cup hoodoo. Same. I found it quite sad watching young fans say they would stay in the PL over winning the FA Cup.
ScouseFox Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 Anyone who thinks finishing 17th is better than winning the FA Cup needs their head checking.
MC Prussian Posted 14 May 2013 Posted 14 May 2013 Welcome back to the Championship, Wigan! It's going to be a tough season next year, 46 league games, cup runs and an appearance on the European stage all in one single football year. Ask Birmingham City for further advice.
Fox92 Posted 15 May 2013 Posted 15 May 2013 Same. I found it quite sad watching young fans say they would stay in the PL over winning the FA Cup. When we had that thread ages ago, I said I'd rather win the FA Cup than win promotion just to stay in the PL for a year. The FA Cup isn't like what it used to be though, it has been ruined. It should be at the end of the season at 3pm, not during the season at 5:15pm. But I suppose it's how you view it personally. I've always said (and got stick for this) it's the best cup competiton in the World, but the media always build the European Cup up. I do love the FA Cup, can't remember the last time I missed the final, always make sure I watch it. Would love Leicester to win the FA Cup one day.

ADK Posted 15 May 2013 Posted 15 May 2013 The FA cup just dosn't mean as much anymore. Perhaps if it gave a Champions league place it would be an improvement. It really dosn't mean much to the big clubs anymore. It's pretty much identical to the league cup, just played later in the year and includes non league teams in the early rounds.
Danizen Posted 15 May 2013 Posted 15 May 2013 So if Arsenal beat Newcastle 2-1 and Chelsea draw 0-0, there will be a play-off for third place.
Jimothy Posted 15 May 2013 Posted 15 May 2013 It's 3rd place, couldn't they just flip a coin? I think 4th has to play a qualifying round for the champions league, 3rd doesn't. So quite a big difference in where you finish.
Corky Posted 15 May 2013 Posted 15 May 2013 It's 3rd place, couldn't they just flip a coin? Why don't they do it on head-to-head?
