Schlupp trial at Manchester United

I know we can't begrudge him taking his chance, but staying in his shoes and being pragmatic, what future does he see for himself at Man United? He must know he'll never be getting near the first team.

EDIT: As a Striker that is, LB could possibly be different.

You say that but he's only 20! They've been viewing him mainly as a left back but wanted to give him his first game in his favoured position up front and by all accounts he played very well, I believe his next game for them will be at left back. Evra is no spring chicken these days and Buttner is far from the ideal replacement. Having a player that can play left back, left wing and striker is very valuable even to a team with unlimited funds such as Manchester United. I'm pretty gutted to say it but don't expect him back here, tonight was just a brief glimpse of what Jeff can do and he's only going to get better. There is a reason they've kept him for so long, most trials usually last 2 weeks maximum. He's been there just over a month now.

Danny Welbeck is only 22. As a Striker he's got no chance, LB maybe

Yeah at 20 Danny Welbeck was on loan at Preston. So your point is irrelevant. Welbeck got that much better in 2 years from being in and around the United set up, no one knows what being in the same environment what would happen to Jeff but everything points to making him a much better player.

was just about to say that haha, put a shit player in a top teams set up and you're guarenteed an improvement

Actually he was 19 at Preston, and had already played for the Man U first team in cups and the Champions League. Turned 20 the next season whilst at PL Sunderland. So actually it's not irrelevant because its not hard to prove Welbeck's development has come at a far higher trajectory than Schlupp's thus far.

Jeff has been bedded in by Leicester in a similar fashion to Danny Welbeck but it's unfair to compare the two because Welbeck has been at United since he was 6 so has been exposed to best of everything all his career so everything has been on a much bigger scale and he's two years older than Jeff. Nobody can say where Jeff will be in 2 years time. But I'm pretty sure Manchester United know potential and they wouldn't waste their time if they didn't think he could contribute to their first team.

Surely its easy enough.

If Utd are interested, they pay a decent amount and then loan him back to us. (of course this would suggest they think he is a pretty good prospect and would expect him to be a reasonably regular player for us?).

Posted

Why would they loan him back to us? It's not as if he was starting every game for us.

Pearson might give him a game if he's on loan from Man U.

Pearsons already said if he comes back he'll send him out on loan, shows how much he rates him when he sees Waghorn Vardy and Futacs as better strike options, so he may as well stay there, improve as a player and come back in the summer when Pearson has gone.

Who says Pearson's going to use Schlupp as a striker?

I can see him being Konchesky's understudy or (as I've pointed out before) he should be given a chance as LM/LW. Dyer won't stay here forever.

I like that !

Michele Fornasier's injury-time goal gave

U21s: Liverpool 0 United 1

Manchester United a dramatic win over 10-man Liverpool in a keenly-contested Barclays Under-21 Premier League Elite Group derby in St Helens.

The Italian defender pounced from close range just as it seemed Warren Joyce's side would be denied victory in front of a healthy crowd at Langtree Park.

United, missing Ryan Tunnicliffe and Reece Brown following their loan moves to Barnsley and Ipswich Town respectively, had more than held their own against a strong Liverpool team featuring the likes of Raheem Sterling, Jonjo Shelvey and Andre Wisdom.

Jeffery Schlupp impressed as a loan striker for United on the first competitive outing of his spell on trial from Leicester City, while the Reds also fielded Alex Büttner and Nick Powell, the latter back in central midfield after his recent stint up front.

Schlupp, who has won full international honours with Ghana, troubled Liverpool all night with his pace and could have scored several times

Inside two minutes, the 20-year-old slotted just wide after racing onto a through-ball and, soon after, saw his shot blocked by Liverpool goalkeeper Daniel Ward after being played through by Tom Lawrence.

And off the Liverpool site....

Stephen Sama was the unfortunate man as he picked up two yellows for fouls on Manchester United trialist Jeffery Schlupp.

The forward, of German and Ghanaian descent, is on trial from Leicester City and was a thorn in the Reds’ side all evening, particularly that of Sama who was ultimately unable to cope. Schlupp missed two gilt edged chances inside the first five minutes, first firing wide before being denied by a superb save from Ward, who made his first of several stops after making himself big as the striker was sent clean through.

First time I've seen him play and he was reasonably impressive, although I do think a large part of that was down to his pace and power against a young Liverpool defence. I was also under the impression that we were using him as a LB and can see how he might look good there (as a point of interest, Evra also started out as a striker and he has done pretty well at left back for us) :D . What are you guys thoughts on what position he is strongest in? I am personally far from convinced by Buttner and suspect he won't be seen as a long term option for us there.

Personally prefer him at LB

He was good up front for Brentford when we loaned him out, but he's never really done it for us up front under either Sven or Pearson, he's worked hard and never looked out of place, but never had that extra spark needed at Championship level.

I watched about half of last night's game and I thought he looked good, although he's obviously playing against U21s. Disappointingly I saw him make a lot of good runs which nobody picked out with a pass so it could have gone better for him.

He could be a solid forward if he continues to grow, but I can't see him pulling up trees in that position, whereas as an attacking fullback - if he grows to learn the defensive positioning needed he could be immense.

How do you know this? Not having a go, just wondering.

I've got a friend who I went to University with who works at United in their sport science department. Told me that Jeff has in the majority been training as a left back.

I'd just like to point out that Schlupp wasn't playing for ManU's first team. He was playing for and against an U21 side for which he failed to score. I'm not saying he isn't a good prospect but he isn't an obvious world beater yet.

I must admit I did chuckle when I saw a few people having a meltdown on twitter about him "not being good enough for us but enough enough to play for Manchester United". Newsflash he's not suddenly taking RVP's place in the team lol

As far as I've herd he missed a shed load of chances and managed to head a ball back across the box for a goal?

Hardly puts him in the frame for the Balon D'or does it?

The general consensus from United supporters and the match report was a decent game, drew 2 fouls which resulted in a Liverpool player being sent off, but still missed 4 or 5 chances (though the keeper apparently pulled off a great save for one of them).

Personally convinced Jeffers has a future in the game.Pretty strong in all departments, good temperament, quick, strong.rides a tackle,Hope its with us - think it should be with us but I have a feeling he will make the grade regardless
