Birmingham Post Match Thread 3-2

Strange game today, very frustrating at times but ended up finishing with a flourish. Thought Pearson got the formation completely wrong first half, the 3 in midfield against their 5 were completely outnumbered meaning both Wood and Nugent had to drop deep to try and pick up the ball. In addition, the midfield was very narrow leading to a lack of width. When De Laet tried to push forward he lacked support, and Birmingham kept doubling up on him preventing him from getting into any dangerous positions.

Their goal was an horrendous piece of defending with De Laet getting the wrong side of the ball to block the cross despite being beaten by a virtually identical cross no more than 5 minutes beforehand. Moore appeared to completely misjudge the flight of the ball, and neither Schlupp nor Whitbread picked up Green. With the lack of any real threat up front, it look like it was destined to be one of those afternoons.

Credit where credit is due, Pearson completely redeemed himself and the change of personnel and formation at half time completely changed the game, and allowed us to add width and be more incisive. Dyer's pace caused Birmingham all manner of problems down the left hand side and Knockaert looked much sharper showing a delightful touch to lay off the ball to Nugent in the build up to the second goal.

Despite a fortuitous penalty to win the game, City were certainly worthy of the win despite it not being one of their best displays and their new found ability to grind out results when faced with adversity is encouraging.

Finally, special praise should go out to Jamie Vardy for yet another superb performance again today. His all round game has improved significantly from last season, and his goal today was very well taken indeed.

Great start to the season. We're showing some grit which was lacking last year.

Point of (debatable) interest: Billy Davies was at the game today. Doesn't appear to be playing either side very soon. Maybe planning a late splurge of more money?

Yeah, shame Wes was out and he buggered off at 0-1 and missed it all lol

Although de Laet is rightly admired for his work rate and the timing of his tackles and for his speed going forward - he regularly allows his winger to get in crosses which cd and shd be blocked out by him. Add to that his poor delivery in attacking positions and you have a player who is popular but actually not that great.

No. It was a tactical change, as Pearson said himself. Drinkwater wasted a couple of good chances first half and, for an attacking midfielder, he has a tremendous tendency to lose possession / shoot into row z / fail to pick out the killer ball. From where I was, it was crucial that we took him off. And, lo and behold, it was the right thing to do.

Fair enough. After the game on the way home radio Leicester said he was taken off cos of injury. He did lay on the killer pass to wood in the first half who sliced his chance wide. I didn't see him lose the ball much but yes he did miss a great chance but tbf he got himself into a great position to miss that chance. The subs (particularly dyer) did well, my point was that he played his part in a first half where the team created a number of chances that just weren't put away.

If that really was why he was there then he is a bit of a tit. He's signed 2 central defenders who have so far not conceded and he knows Wes would take a very sizeable wedge of money for us to even consider letting him go. Maybe he's just trying to disrupt our season.

He's a tit regardless of why he was there.

He was probably scouting us and/or Birmingham for when they play us/them.

Well done LCFC for coming back from 1.0 down - Vardy I thought you were brilliant.  One question:  Why the boos at half time?  If you cant support your team - don't come - simple.  Go and support Man U instead.  We don't need you!  Oh and I hope you make a quick recovery Wes

Do you know this Bert? Or just by what you see?

Personally, Nugent seems to look much happier, Moore and Schlupp look comfortable but I thought Wood looked as miserable as chuff yesterday.

Something is working well at present. Long may it continue.
