If I could move on from today's sad eel news just for a moment, is there any evidence that there's ever any gap of any length between a player putting pen to paper and it being announced?

A lot of energy seems to go into people convincing themselves that someone's signed, when the absence of official confirmation is a strong indicator that they haven't. Then they do, and it gets announced.

Am I just being very naive?

There is sometimes a very long gap between a player agreeing a deal in principle and then being confirmed as signed. David Nugent took about 2 months when Sven got him. That was when Fourth Official was never wrong and all summer he assured us he'd signed and it got confirmed 2 months later. Free agents can sometimes take longer for whatever reason.

Private white helicopter has just landed within the training ground. 

 

EDIT: There wasn't 2, just the 1 as far as I could see.

 

Was it followed by a bunch of flying pigs?

I've just seen a private helicopter fly over my house accompanied by 12 Apache gunships with several F-16's soon after. Pearson taking no risks.

2 months between actually signing and it being announced?  I'm not disputing it, I'm just intrigued as to what would be the point.

 

I can see that you might have an agreement in principle or whatever, but unless there's a pre-contract agreement which is presumably binding, there's nothing concrete at all, so we should all just relax and have a nice cup of tea or some soup, for those with more exotic tastes.

 

I expect the helicopter was bringing in a wreath for the eel
