Freesolo Posted 16 September 2015 Posted 16 September 2015 I was thinking after the dross shown by the English teams in the champions league last night, how brilliant would it be if someone was to disrupt the usual top 4 and a team not usually in the champions league finished in the top 4? In the spainish, German and Italian leagues it seems to change every year. How brilliant would it be if teams like palace, Swansea and Southampton did what we probably would all think is impossible? Id like to think they show a lot more passion, of course the dream is to eventually build Leicester enough that we get there to, but let's not rush things as we could easily crash and burn. The only teams from England I've liked watching in the champions league in recent years are arsenal and Tottenham, as they were by far the most daring and entertaining, they went out to play and weren't held back by this tactical b*llsh*t that is popular in today's game. Arsenal & Chelsea are the only Premiership teams that understand how to play in Europe, teams like City try and play their usual Prem style and look how well that has worked out for them in the last 5 years So what does that say? Its the management Wenger & Mourinho know the score, Brendan rodgers is Clueless when it comes to European football as is Pelligrini, Van Gaal should know what he is doing and I wouldn't wright United off yet they had bad luck and lost a key player. as for the other Manchester team with Sevilla looking so good they have a monumental task on their hands to turn things around and get out of that group I'd say they wont get out their group.
Captain... Posted 16 September 2015 Posted 16 September 2015 Hilarious to see Mahrez as second highest rated player, yet is also there in the dispossessed and unsuccessful touches. The best and the worst of him in one game.
filbertway Posted 16 September 2015 Posted 16 September 2015 Hilarious to see Mahrez as second highest rated player, yet is also there in the dispossessed and unsuccessful touches. The best and the worst of him in one game. Bound to happen when he's consistently swarmed by opposition players.

Rio Ferdinand was saying last night man Utd's strategy for the champions league was to counter attack, which is what all other teams bar your bayern munichs and your Barcelonas do to us year after year. How they haven't learned this is a mystery, this is why Man Utd under Ferguson were reasonably successful in the champions league as well as Chelsea and arsenal(however to a lesser extent)
FoxSince88 Posted 16 September 2015 Posted 16 September 2015 Bournemouth have signed Cannataro, the Italian bloke who was on trial with us
Great Boos Up Posted 16 September 2015 Posted 16 September 2015 Could Chelsea win the Champions league and still be in a relegation battle? is there any football history similar?

JPM1983 Posted 16 September 2015 Posted 16 September 2015 Could Chelsea win the Champions league and still be in a relegation battle? is there any football history similar? I'm sure that's never happened, but didn't Wigan win the FA Cup and get relegated a few years ago? Not quite on the same scale though.
Izzy Posted 16 September 2015 Posted 16 September 2015 Most tackles and interceptions (combined) Jordan Amavi (Aston Villa) – 13 Nemanja Matic (Chelsea) – 12 Eric Dier (Tottenham) – 10 Laurent Koscielny (Arsenal) – 9 Ritchie De Laet (Leicester City) – 9 Cheikhou Kouyate (West Ham) – 9 Francis Coquelin (Arsenal) – 9 Wilfried Zaha (Crystal Palace) – 9 Roberto Firmino (Liverpool) – 9 Yet RDL gets consistently hammered on here and crucified on the match day thread
Wymsey Posted 16 September 2015 Posted 16 September 2015 It's because he gives the ball away a lot and his positioning can be crap.
Izzy Posted 16 September 2015 Posted 16 September 2015 It's because he gives the ball away a lot and his positioning can be crap. Maybe, but without his goal we wouldn't have beat Villa and be second in the league. Maybe his strengths make up for his perceived weaknesses...
Izzy Posted 16 September 2015 Posted 16 September 2015 He didn't play well though. Yet he's in the top 4 PL defenders for tackles and interceptions and he also scored a vital goal. No pleasing some I suppose...
NewburyFox Posted 16 September 2015 Posted 16 September 2015 Yet he's in the top 4 PL defenders for tackles and interceptions and he also scored a vital goal. No pleasing some I suppose... Lies, damned lies and statistics. When he was required to defend in the first half, he was rubbish - again. He's better going forward so it was no surprise that as we dominated the second half he improved.
biggs Posted 16 September 2015 Posted 16 September 2015 Yet he's in the top 4 PL defenders for tackles and interceptions and he also scored a vital goal. No pleasing some I suppose... Great stats but relying on stats to make your point when his defending has been poor is pointless. Great goal and his attacking play was solid.

Great goal and his attacking play was solid. I know that when I played, if I'd walked into the changing room after a game where I'd made the most tackles and interceptions for my team AND scoring a goal - I'd be treated as a hero. Not told my defending was rubbish and my positioning was crap. Maybe we should leave it to CR and the team to judge RDL rather than us amateurs.....
Stadt Posted 16 September 2015 Posted 16 September 2015 Defenders making tackles doesn't necessarily mean they're having a good game, Rob McKenzie even said it's basically pointless judging a defender on stats alone
ScouseFox Posted 16 September 2015 Posted 16 September 2015 Could Chelsea win the Champions league and still be in a relegation battle? is there any football history similar? dortmund for most of last year
deejdeej Posted 16 September 2015 Posted 16 September 2015 Players are targeting De Laet, therefore he has many more opportunities to make tackles. Villa seemed to attack our right side much more often then anywhere else... Mahrez' lack of tracking back doesn't help RDL admittedly.
Guest ttfn Posted 17 September 2015 Posted 17 September 2015 Question for the stattos: When was the last time we were 7 points ahead of Chelsea?
Corky Posted 17 September 2015 Posted 17 September 2015 Was it 2000? They were pretty poor for most of the first half of that season whilst we started like a train.
Jordan Posted 17 September 2015 Posted 17 September 2015 Was it 2000? They were pretty poor for most of the first half of that season whilst we started like a train.Yes--we went 8 points clear of them after we dicked them at the Bridge.
Corky Posted 17 September 2015 Posted 17 September 2015 Yes--we went 8 points clear of them after we dicked them at the Bridge. Quick glance of Statto.com shows we were 9 clear of them at Christmas (joint second with Arsenal ).
