Us English have been called many things, but mermaids is a new one on me! I shall now be off to Rutland water and Thornton reservoir to search for said mermaids.

We offered a lot more though didn't we?

Why would Caen accept  5M€  from Marseille when we've offered double that?

Because in the end, the player has a say in where he's going to. Regardless of whether you'd want to compare the football transfer market to some sort of slave trade, the protagonists do actually have a free will  - not to say the least since the Bosman ruling.

Well that's not quite true.

He's under contract at Caen and its up to them whether they accept or refuse offers.

If Leicester offer € 10 million and Marseille offer € 5 million then they will accept Leicester's offer and refuse Marseille's.

Then it's up to the player to agree terms with Leicester or stay at Caen.

The player only has totally free will at the end of his contract.

Thought god gave every one free will?

But the player can also say I'm not going to Leicester and if you don't let me go to Marseille I'm going to be 'injured' a lot next season and be a bad influence in the dressing room and run my contract down.

It's a pretty dynamic relationship.

He can do all that but ultimately it's Caen's decision if he stays or whose offer they accept.

It's not for Marseille to dictate to Caen what his transfer price will be.

It's like the Sterling situation, if Liverpool's valuation isn't met then he'll be there until it is or until his contract expires. Ultimately it's Liverpool's choice what happens, not Sterling's.

OM is negotiating with Ngolo Kanté, to offset the likely departure Giannelli Imbula to Inter Milan.

According Parisien information, leaders Marseille have sent a contract proposal with a salary of 100,000 euros gross per month in the middle of Caen field. The clubs would already agreed to a compensation of 5 million. As a reminder, the player currently receives 40,000 euros per month

Not sure if this is some sort of effort from OM saying "LCFC don't bother, we'll pay him the same as you would offer" or his agent trying to get an increased offer from us.  I can't see us paying him more than what's been quoted here.  The only thing we might be able to offer is more game time.  Could be a tricky signing.

To which he would be told he is ruining his own career and can rot in the reserves away from the first team until Marseille make an acceptable offer.

25k euros a week well that's it we can afford that lol is this a joke if he came to us he would be on a minimum of £30k a week so that article is a weak but of press haha

If the player has this sort of personality & is willing to say this to his club then he shows no loyalty therefore I wouldn't want him at our club & I don't think Pearson would either.

I still think he will sign, ball isn't in his court it's in Caen's they don't have to sell him if they don't want, and if they choose too they will sell him to whoever benefits them most. So really we offer the better package, balls in our court.

This. Caen will side with the highest bidder. The player will also, when it ultimately comes down to it, probably side with the highest bidder. That, for the time being anyway, looks like us so we are still in the driving seat I think.

Anyone who can remember 20 years back may recall the situation with Emerson and Middlesbrough.

Emerson wanted to move but Boro wanted to keep him. He was 24 at the time and still had four year left on his contract but went on strike.

I remember Steve Gibson, the Boro chairmain saying that they still won't sell him and they could afford to lose the money but Emerson couldn't afford not to work for four years.

Emerson came back and played for the rest of the season and was then sold IIRC.

I agree, I'm just making the point that players can engineer a move. Id argue that Sterling has engineered his move, Liverpool are reluctant sellers which is one reason his price is so high. It would be interesting to see what happens if Man City don't increase their offer and said "£40m take it or leave it"

Savage wrote about it a while back.

Presuming Marseille don't have a legally binding offer accepted I can't see how they will get him unless they up the offer.

Caen will just refuse the Marseille bid and accept the Leicester bid.

Kante won't be a wealthy man yet so money will be a huge factor and why would he go to Marseille when he can earn 50% or so more at Leicester?

It's also a statement of intent by both clubs how much they really want him which will be a huge factor in his choice.

I'm quietly confident we  are well positioned here.  :)

He can engineer it to a point, albeit a big point but ultimately it is Liverpool's decision what they do.

How long does he have left on his contract?

If it is a year he has the power - simple as that - Caen are not big enough to turn down £5m from OM even if they get an offer of £10m from us and let him go wherever he wants for free next year.

If his agent looks after his client, he will advise him this.If his agent is looking after his own pocket, he will advise him to come to Leicester where the agent will probably get a better deal for himself.

Not politically correct, but if LCFC want him that much they need to offer the agent a really decent fee and work on the agent advising his client to move to us. Hasn't his agent changed recently though? Wonder why? Could it be his ex agent wasn't looking after his interests? If this is the case, his new agent may well just accept his player has enough intelligence to not be easily lead. Depends on how clued up the lad is himself and those around him (family) who really have his best interests at heart.

At the end of the day if Marseille offer him a salary that will make him really rich, and we offer one that will make him really rich but a bit richer, this may not be enough if he has set his heart on playing for OM. You never know, it could have been his boyhood dream to play for OM. Doubt it was to play for Leicester. He may be scared at moving to a new country, might not speak much english? There are so many factors playing into this, who knows where he will end up.
