Matt Posted 23 October 2015 Posted 23 October 2015 Drank a can of 6 month out of date Guinness the other day, still here to tell the story
BoyJones Posted 23 October 2015 Posted 23 October 2015 I won't drink curdled milk and chuck out veg that has turned liquidy. Otherwise, I eat loads of stuff past the sell by date. Anything with a bit of mould just cut it off. Last christmas for some reason had three massive pork pies with sell by dates late December. Finished the last one at the end of January. No problems. Powdered / dry stuff is normally alright for years, as is tinned stuff if the tin has not blown. We've got plenty of stuff in the cupboards going back to 2008/9 or earlier. Normally Christmas gifts of posh food. Gets used eventually. As I have never had a day off sick in 46+ years of working, not done me any harm. The main thing is to make sure food is all cooked properly, especially certain meats.
Merging Cultures Posted 23 October 2015 Posted 23 October 2015 All the time. Our food in the shops is usually just in date. In Lesotho it was often due that day. The food companies are risk averse, food is often safe to eat well beyond the date they put on. They have to deal with the lowest common denominator who cannot tell if food is off.
Rincewind Posted 23 October 2015 Posted 23 October 2015 I have done myself but at the food project I volunteer for the rules are very strict. Any complaints of stomach upsets will fall back on us. We cannot even put out of date stuff on the takeaway menu. There is a difference between best before and use by. On a plus not TRFP received a 5 star rating from the environmental officer that visited today so we are doing everything right. As the leader said the other week because we are voluntary and do not get paid there is no need to cut corners to save money.
Great Boos Up Posted 23 October 2015 Posted 23 October 2015 The best before date on bottled water is for the container. NOT the water.
Unabomber Posted 23 October 2015 Posted 23 October 2015 I ate an out of date date once while on a date, was well nice.
Steven Posted 23 October 2015 Posted 23 October 2015 I ate an out of date date once while on a date, was well nice. You like older men?
Unabomber Posted 23 October 2015 Posted 23 October 2015 You like older men? Are you trying to seduce me Steven?
Dr The Singh Posted 23 October 2015 Posted 23 October 2015 All the time, the way I see it, it toughens the stomach up If it passes the sniff test, consume it.Is that the fingers?

Nick Posted 24 October 2015 Posted 24 October 2015 It was quite rare to find something 'in date' in the house I grew up in.
FantasticMrFuchs Posted 24 October 2015 Posted 24 October 2015 yes, except when you spot the tiniest bit of mould on bread that's a no in my book.
Webbo Posted 24 October 2015 Posted 24 October 2015 yes, except when you spot the tiniest bit of mould on bread that's a no in my book. Pick it off and stick it in the toaster.
fuchsntf Posted 24 October 2015 Posted 24 October 2015 EATING Cake, and Chelsea have been eating it all season. Morhino is definitly out of date..!!
Guest Col city fan Posted 26 October 2015 Posted 26 October 2015 My old Mum is a classic for out of date stuff - mainly sauces, condiments and medicines. Whenever we go up their to eat, it's not uncommon for the mustard or something to be at least two years out of date - she couldn't give a monkeys though. Back in 'her day' there was no such thing as 'use by' dates, so she pays little/no attention to them. Absolutely spot on. My mum is exactly the same...I was clearing out her kitchen cupboards the other week back and found a jar of 'Lyles Golden Syrup' that was out of date by...wait for it...three years! When I told her she replied that I was fussing..
ithuriel Posted 26 October 2015 Posted 26 October 2015 Don't leave things in the fridge. Cowboy Bebop? I've suffered food poisoning, makes alcohol poisoning seem like a mild headache in comparison. Was a take away that laid me out for half a week, could not even drink water without my stomach wanting to crawl out my throat, that first night sitting on the toilet whilst holding a bucket to throw up in and shivering from being so friggin cold.
Carl the Llama Posted 26 October 2015 Posted 26 October 2015 Cowboy Bebop? Yip, episode's called Toys in the Attic, probably my favourite filler anime episode ever.
Rincewind Posted 9 November 2015 Posted 9 November 2015 This is the main site for TRJFP. I forget which way round it is now but they are trying to get the government to remove best before/sell by labels. as a lot of food is still edible. It depends on how it is kept. Most foods are contaminated when exposed to moisture. Kept dry and at the right temperature the food is fine after the sell by date Food banks cannot use them yet TRJFP can. Crazy. 1 billion children worldwide are in poverty yet we wast 1.3 billion tonnes of food each year. There is no need for anyone to go hungry but it may not favour the big corporations to cut down on waste as it could mean lower prices less profits. But that's a different topic. The story of TRJFP and recipes that will save money for low budget families is here. TRJFP=The Real Junk Food Project. The county Council have asked the two main organisers of the Leicester one if they want funding to set up one in the county. Possibly Loughborough. It is set up as a CIC I think and because they both have jobs they would prefer to have others running the project at other places. If they were to do it full time it could not be voluntary It is great how it has grown since it started in April as is the feedback. One user sent an email saying that they had a disabled child and going there was the only chance to get out as a family socialise with others as they were on a low wage income. If you want to know if something is fit for consumption, use your senses. If it looks, smells and feels OK then you should be OK.
Ric Flair Posted 9 November 2015 Posted 9 November 2015 I once ate a still frozen fish finger, chipped a tooth and gave me the most horrific garries i've ever had.
kingcarr21 Posted 9 November 2015 Posted 9 November 2015 I had food poisoning for 3 weeks. Lived on dry toast and flat lucozade and lost about 2 stone in weight back when i was 15. No idea what caused it. Wish i could have it again though. Imagine 3 weeks of constant gaming whilst the wife sorted the kids out and lose 2 stone in weight as an added bonus. Quick someone pass me that raw fish.
