My Audi wouldn't go into gear last Friday. Semi-automatic gearbox so had an auto transmission specialist look at it.

Selector forks have fallen to bits which in turn has damaged the clutch (sealed twin clutch unit). Gonna be around £2k to fix.

FML.

I had a huge result today with my 21 year old XJ8, which two people had told me was a failed fuel pump; got someone who was willing to spend some actual time looking at it and between us we checked out fuses and had a proper listen when trying to turn it over and eventually surmised it could be a blocked up fuel filter (can happen if you go to a dodgy garage for fuel) and after ten minutes of turning it over and pumping the gas we got it going. That recovery fella has likely saved me a small fortune.

Need to get some redex in it soonest.

Gearbox mount snapped and wheel bearing buggered on my car. I put the blame down to the never ending speed bumps, in New Lubbesthorpe, which I go down twice a day. Won’t be going down there any more.

I went down there once. Thought fck this there is no one around - straight onto the pavement for the rest of the road.

Yeah cheapo supermarket fuel isn't good for filters over the long term. Fuel injectors are another common thing to get clogged up using cheap fuel.

Personally I've always used 98 RON stuff like Shell V Power or Tesco Momentum.

Just had a safety recall for the airbag inflator on my Ford Ranger - It's 13 years old and done 252k miles FFS!!!!!!

Has anybody else had a later safety recall?

Mine is a 2005 plate and was recalled for the same thing ...    apparently if it had gone off it could have been fatal ! ...  death by airbag  ..  that’s a new one !

Turned out to be the clutch that failed and made the selector forks jam up. 16 hours of labour to drop the gearbox out, strip it all out and clean it up, check the the rest of the gearbox and replace the clutch and some smaller related bits.

Cost was still the same. Just what you want right before Christmas.

EGR valve went on the Alfa a few weeks ago. Other than that it's been OK this year other than the usual consumables and me fvcking up not sorting a new battery meaning it died one night.

Very lucky to work about 5 miles from one of the best independent Alfa garages in the UK who are absolutely fantastic.

Hi all - car insurance renewal time for me. Can anyone tell me of companies that offer original manufacturers parts in light of accidents? Talking engine, bodywork and glass.

Thanks

well that’s a question that’s never entered my head at any point when looking at car insurance!

It's the kinda thing that only occurs if you want to make a claim. I'm with direct line this year and needed a replacement windscreen. They would not offer me a like for like audi replacement unless I paid approx 250 more. Same would apply to motor parts, I.e. not offering original audi replacements as you would get if you serviced your motor at main dealer.

Interesting. Is there a big difference between an Audi windscreen and a standard ‘autowindscreens’ one? Are they heated?

I dont think the difference is big. Autoglass/autowindscreens normally fit approved aftermarket stuff from st gobain or pilkington (who I'm sure make the factory fitted ones also). Heard a few stories about distortion when looking across the glass. I think the difference in quality is more noticeable with engine parts though.

Oh absolutely engine parts could be very different in quality. I only asked because I’m the lucky fvcker who’s had to have 4 new windscreens in 4 years so the windscreen part of your post caught my attention!!

The people who insure my cars are a company called Certis. It’s a broker, but without going into detail on here it is high end service and I deal with the company owners whose knowledge is second to none. Much better than a call centre or online form as you know exactly what you get and they will match your personal requirements.

Cant go into detail on here, but it’s competitive rates but also  tailored to your needs.

Great for insurance of any kind.

Not sure but I just had my pads, discs and calipers done and if it was still making a metallic grinding noise afterwards I'd take it straight back.

Anyone have much experience selling cars? My girlfriend sold her car the other day. Sold as spares/repairs as head gasket gone. I wasnt in and shes only been driving a year so didnt really know what to do. Anyway the guy is a mechanic and had trade plates and took the car, paying cash, and took the entire log book so we have nothing to send off. Unfortunately we didn't have a copy of it either. He told her he would do it online (which I know you can do now) when he got back but is still yet to do so, so obviously I'm worrying a bit in case anything were to come from it. All we have of the bloke is a first name and a phone number, no address etc. Anyone know what we can do in this situation? Thanks.

I’d write to the DVLA and explain what’s happened, they should take your details off the vehicle so nothing can come back onto you.

Thanks for the info. I ended up going with Audi insurance in the end. More expensive than direct line, but offer genuine audi replacement parts.

Let's hope I dont have to claim and see if its as they say it is.

I've got an 11 year old x-type and the GEARBOX FAULT warning sign came on last week.

Shit myself as you do - thinking it would cost a bomb, so took it to the local garage I've been going to for years. They said it was a carbon build up in the turbo and cleaned out some filter and put some redex equivalent in.

Also told me to 'treat' the car to some decent fuel for once so I put some Esso ultimate dogs bollux stuff in and the things purring like a big cat again
