PL U21 sides proposed for JPT

From FSF

This week the Telegraph reported Premier League clubs had floated the idea of entering their U21 sides in the Football League's Johnstone's Paint Trophy, to aid their development. Fans of lower division sides are unhappy with the proposals. "There is clear opposition amongst lower league teams," said Tony Roome FSF national council member and Leyton Orient fan. "We, generally, don't want the PL anywhere near it."

What a daft idea.

If they want to mess about with a cup competition mess about with the  league cup, make that U21 for prem teams.

Personally don't care but do think it should be up for vote exclusively amongst football league clubs.

Pretty dreadful competition mind anyway.

Agree totally with this.

I'm still gutted we didn't win this when we were in league one

Personally I'm happy to not have that trophy on the honours list, makes it that bit easier to forget that we were once that shit.

Terrible idea.  If they want their youngsters to play against and with senior players they should bring back the reserve leagues.

This would be yet another nail in the coffin of lower league football, taking away potential vital revenue from lower league clubs should they be knocked out in earlier rounds because of premier league involvement. Possibly denying them  a trip to Wembley too.

I think it's a pretty good idea, the JPT is a pretty poor competition currently,it will test the young lads and make it more competitive, also test the level of the players, it could benefit the lower clubs as it may make them more aware of lower league players and therefore potential signings

Should have won it easily though, we were so much better than anything else in that league. Imo it would have softened the blow looking back on our only (hopefully) season in that league knowing we won two trophies in 9 months.

Wow- I can't believe people are having big regrets about the JPT when the premier league title is 7 games away. Haha

How will it make it more competitive? Man United reserves are hardly gonna go all out to win the thing and get a trip to Wembley are they? They're just gonna use it to give the lads they've hoarded since they were teenagers a game to stop them wanting out permanently.

always thought the championship should be allowed to enter it. Other than promotion, championship clubs don't have a realistic chance to win a trophy and gives them a chance of Wembley

It'd unfair to use these cup competitions as a way of helping the bigger clubs for the future of their 'rookie' personnel.

Youth players should try to impress senior coaches in the reserves, the reserves being a 'competition' to develop themselves and as a way of understanding the game.

Whatever happened to the 'Football Combination' leagues? This was proper reserves football.

That's their own fault though. Second tier clubs seem to be worse than Prem ones for putting out weakened sides in the Cups sometimes. Every chance they could have decent runs if they didn't prioritise promotion over silverware and a place in history for their club.

:dunno:

" maybe if you try rerally hard, you too could be a reserve player for Man United

I suppose the question would be about attendances, woulda team such as Northampton or Notts County get a big crowd to come and watch them play Man Utd, Liverpool, Arsenal u21 etc?

Would the teams still be allowed 3 overage players, could be a revenue raiser for lower league clubs if top players we on their way back from injury and playing at their club.

The only rule I would add is all premier league clubs must play away when drawn against lower league teams, with the lower league team getting 100% of gate receipts.

Mods moan about others starting new threads and Voll already covered this in the actual League 1/2/JPT thread.

Absolutely ridiculous idea though. The football league trophy was made to give the smaller clubs the chance of competitively playing for a trophy considering it is very difficult for them to go far in the League Cup or FA Cup.

I read these articles and think "those utter cvnts in the PL ruining lower league football".

Then I remember that we're in the PL.

Then I remember we're top.

This season :claudio:

I will feel pretty terrible if us winning the Premier League causes all this knee-jerk "SAVE THE BIG CLUBS' FINANCES" shit to actually happen.
