New Assistant Manager(s)

Has anyone heard anything about potential incoming Assistants - to replace Walshy to start with - and possibly Shaky IF he goes off part-time to England ?

I would have thought a few rumours would have been circulating about Walsh's replacement now - it been a couple of weeks and I guess Claudio must be pretty short staffed at this crucial time in the close season.  It would be intriguing to see if he looks for an Assistant here - or goes back to Italy / France / Spain for help from an old mate (like Bonetti) !

He already brought in his assistants when he joined, if anything we were overloaded in that department

I thought one of them left after a few months? So with them gone and now Walsh there's possibly a gap to fill not to mention on the recruitment side of things.

He was the goal keeping coach I believe. If CS went then we might need one more, but I don't think there is any need to replace Walsh in a coach capacity. It's already been stated Rudkin will head up the scouting department (yay).

Regarding the recruitment side of things, this needs to be addressed asap imo.

I would possibly be looking to do what has been done to us, i.e. poach someone from one of our rivals.  I would have thought that Southampton is a club worth investigating?

Look at the number of times they have lost their managers in recent years, followed by the loss of many of their best players. Have they suffered as a result of these happenings? It would appear not to have done so. They have brought in more than adequate replacements in both management & players, so someone in their system seems to know what they are doing. Who is this person/persons? Why not consider bringing them to City?

It appears that all is fair in love & war......& football!!!

Didn't Bonetti leave after just a few months with us, or was that someone else Claudio brought in?

Which leaves only Azzalin, who's appears to be an addition to the sports science department.

Aaaaah Benetti is still here isn't he?

I'm intrigued to see if David Mills is given the gig as Walsh's replacement. He's equally as important in the scouting, we should be making sure he's well looked after.

He's in most of the training photos, so I think he's still here. I read it was the keeping coach as mentioned, as we already had MS here for that.

A lot of that is down to their infrastructure. Their academy is as good as it gets in Europe  and produces significant squad numbers.

He brought his own in. Raneiri couldn't sack Shakespeare or Walsh, that was part of his deal when he signed.

We managed to land Kaputska without Walsh so it is not like recruitment has ground to a halt without him. How well Rudkin will do in charge of recruitment we'll have to wait and see, but he's taking over a well run department so he'd have to be an idiot to completely fvck it up. The advantage of Rudkin taking over means he won't feel the need to come in and make changes.

What amazes me after all our years of experience is how many Academy recruits fail to make the grade here and how few succeed. Southampton seem to have a proverbial production line in operation so what's making the difference?

It's certainly not a lack of facilities or resources.

We've even had a fair amount of youth football success which doesn't suggest a lack of talent. We just can't get many over the final hurdles.

So is it lack of opportunity for the youngsters or the money to be made from buying and selling established players that makes utilising our own graduates so unattractive?

Is it quite simply that there's this unfilled playing gulf between under 18 football and the first team? Or something else? Like the need to be involved in a real team rather than a mish-mash?

I've no conclusions because I don't involve myself now, but I'd welcome opinion.

Because the current system doesn't seem to be especially effective.

We may get Chilwell through this year. Schlupp, King and Liam Moore were past graduates, together with a few more like Gradel, Porter, Mattock, Sheehan, Wesolowski, Mattock and let's add Billy McKay up in Scotland.

But that's not a lot for the last decade or so of investment and the number of players involved. Perhaps a dozen or so at sustained Premiership or Championship level. Or little more than one a year if I allow for a few that I've forgotten.

Does that point to Rudkin being a recruiter? I actually wonder if someone like Kingy could get involved in this on a part-time basis.

It's a vital job. Kingy's still got some important football in him as part of our first team squad but there's much more to the guy than just being a player and he must already have accumulated a vast amount of knowledge both in terms of who's who and what qualities are needed to be a top class professional.

I'm just thinking aloud really. He might not fancy the idea at all or the club might think it's too early to involve him yet. But I'd sure be inclined to test the waters even on a casual basis.

Because I could so easily see Kingy being as capable in terms of recruiting, coaching or managing as he is at playing. And who says his involvement should just be on the pitch?
