Marmite Posted 11 August 2016 Posted 11 August 2016 I'm looking to take the Mrs away for the night one Friday next month in the UK and not to far. I want somewhere with a few sights to see and a nice mixture of bars and restaurants at night time anyone got any good suggestions?

Marmite Posted 11 August 2016 Author Posted 11 August 2016 Just looked at Stratford, it looks nice. Have you been before is there much to do?
Guest Posted 11 August 2016 Posted 11 August 2016 I never made it down to sheffield but I keep wishing I had. Seems like a great city all-around and just a hop skip and leap away from some great parkland. 29 minutes ago, Buce said: Stratford? York? have to say I wasn't crazy impressed with york. Not bad, but nothing to get too excited about.

Bayfox Posted 11 August 2016 Posted 11 August 2016 York is a good shout. Or if you like the horses. Newmarket is decent if you can find a Friday or Saturday meet. Dublin is a great shout as well. But a bit of a pain for 1 night I guess. Or how about Cheltenham or the cotswolds.
VLC86 Posted 11 August 2016 Posted 11 August 2016 Nottingham or Liverpool are decent, Notts with the obvious advantage of being close.

We had food at the Albert Docks and then a few drinks after on NYE. Then the other night we went to Liverpool One. Really nice city break. Saying that, I prefer going to the countryside for nights away now. Like the Peak District. A few pubs and a country walk. Old woman mentality already
Strokes Posted 11 August 2016 Posted 11 August 2016 Leamington spa is nice, I took the wife recently and it was really good.
Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 11 August 2016 Posted 11 August 2016 Kidderminster, if you want to experience post-apocalyptic conditions

Not even the chance to see the train in your DP?! I always recommend York whenever anyone asks this question. Greatest city in the country.
ajthefox Posted 11 August 2016 Posted 11 August 2016 Sheffield is a decent city but seriously, go to Liverpool (lived in both for 3 years). It has loads of history and cultural stuff and a brilliant selection of places to eat and drink. Only 2 hours away by car or just over 2 by train.
ScouseFox Posted 12 August 2016 Posted 12 August 2016 liverpool is the best city in britain if not europe tbf

Greatest city in the country. Sad to say, I didn't even realise it was there so I suppose York goes up one notch on that fact. I guess when I visited York it was with the view of living there. Too many tourist, too many people just there for ..erm,... a nice night out. ...so yeah, come to think of it, probably just right for the OP. If you're going as far as York, I might suggest going that little bit further and staying Whitby. If for nothing more than that spectacular mixture of goths and OAPs, that I'm sure no other city in the world has.
Russell sprout Posted 12 August 2016 Posted 12 August 2016 Castletown in the Lake District is great, look up the innkeepers lodge, its all countryside and you can have a long walk followed by a good pint

SemperEadem Posted 12 August 2016 Posted 12 August 2016 Sheffield, Liverpool and Manchester are all ace.
