StriderHiryu Posted 20 August 2016 Posted 20 August 2016 Just got back from the game. First half was timid from both sides but we were all over them in the second half! I think we thoroughly deserved the win even discounting the penalty decisions against us. Drinkwater was absolutely outstanding, ran the show and put in a complete performance. The only negative was Mendy. First half he struggled to get involved and barely touched the ball. Second half he just started to get involved but got injured which is a real shame. Interestingly despite going off the team upped their game considerably. I don't really recall King doing much but whereas in the first half I thought of how much we miss Kante, the second half I didn't and thought we ran the game! I enjoyed the game and our performance. Defence looked solid again, Drinky MOTM, Shinji showed his importance to the team, Ulloa solid and Musa was great. Had he shot instead of trying to lay the ball off we might have nicked it. A mention for Mahrez also, who was very classy going forwards but also looked good for the most part defensively too with some good blocks and helping Simpson out. Hopefully we pick up our first win against the Swans next week!
Guest CityFan 06 Posted 20 August 2016 Posted 20 August 2016 Fair game of football, a real top level match between two great sides. Okazaki was great throughout for me, links the midfield so well and his work rate was superb. Drinkwater excellent, hope Mendy is ok as he also looks promising. Mahrez creative, Albrighton showed glimpses of his quality and Musa is very, very exciting to watch. Musa's pace is going to be a real asset to us and I do think it was a peno. We started very well and started the second half equally as good. Today just goes to show what an impact Huth has at the backline. Wes my MOTM, made many vital blocks and looked back to his best, colossal. Fuchs looked class and dealt well with Arsenal's pace. Today gave me faith in what a good football team we are, we were right up to the level of Arsenal today, I said this against Man Utd in the Community Shield and today was the same. We aren't even 100% fit & that's also without the signings we want - great display from everyone involved today. It really could've gone either way today, both teams had chances. Full credit to Union FS too, again the group go great lengths to produce great Tifo's and their efforts in the atmosphere is highly commendable, pleasure to be part of. I'm always excited whenever they do Tifo displays. The atmosphere was pretty good across the stadium, quiet in parts but by no means bad, love the passion and roar when we were in the ascendancy.
ronnup Posted 20 August 2016 Posted 20 August 2016 Danny class. Simpson class. Wes class. We were robbed but we also didn't make enough chances. Encouraging performance.
kingfox Posted 20 August 2016 Posted 20 August 2016 Good performance but I feel pretty frustrated after that, we perhaps should of won that tbh and getting robbed of a penalty always hurts. As for positives I thought Drinkwater was magnificent especially second half, he is looking like Paul Scholes atm, full of quality. We look much better at the back with Huth in the side, he was solid this evening. Thought Okazaki played well first half, while Mahrez looked far more lively today. Negatives probably that left side, Fuchs looked sloppy towards the end of the game while Albrighton is far too slow. Jury is still out on Mendy being able to play in a two, tenacious little player but the game passed him by far too many times, just hasn't got the pace. Should of won but I'll take that point, at least Arsenal fans go home pissed off.

CosbehFox Posted 20 August 2016 Posted 20 August 2016 Speaks volumes - one set of fans in uproar, another set of fans very happy to see a team work their bollocks off and play as an unit. Don't expect miracles but we will be fine this season, particularly once we find the formula to solve a few issues.
inckley fox Posted 20 August 2016 Posted 20 August 2016 I was really pleased with that. Simpson, Morgan, Huth, Drinkwater, Mahrez, Okazaki all did well. Albrighton was shakier in the second half, perhaps lacking a little sharpness still, whereas Mendy grew into the game. Hopefully he won't be out for long. Vardy did well but could have scored, Fuchs was fine but had a few wobbles. I was impressed with the subs, especially Musa, though he should have scored too. The second penalty shout was scandalous refereeing. I still think we're short of an option or two, especially in midfield, but I've come away feeling really upbeat.

I'm surprised they even know what the word title is... Today will be the closest they get to it for a long time

I'm hoping Drinky improves again this season as I believe he still has lots of potential. He may one day even end up as club captain if we can keep him. He wouldn't look out of place in any team in the league. As for Mendy I don't want to make any judgement yet as it's far too early! Needs a run in the side and then we will have a better idea. I think he was actually signed as part of our "Plan B" as in Ligue 1 he has the second most amount of passes completed after Thiago Motta. Think Ranieri signed him to be more of a Busquets style player who for Barca always has the most touches to get the team started and this would be an option in both Europe and against some teams in the league. Problem is we need a dynamic ball winner because our style requires us to turnover the ball to launch counters. If we can't turn it over we can't cause teams as many problems! However, it felt like 2nd half Drinky started making a number of challenges to get us going. So a potential "solution" is that both Mendy and Drinky share that work. Best examples i can think of is the Scholes /Keane combination, though of course that was maybe the best pairing we've ever seen in this league! Anyway I would like to see us spend all of the Kante money on another centre mid for additional civer. I feel that during the course of the season we need another player in that area because I fear what we would play like without Drinkwater now Kante has gone.
Heymister2015 Posted 20 August 2016 Posted 20 August 2016 Very disappointed with the concourse! Under the impression the kop was having a full refurb. Exactly the same apart from one murial
Kitchandro Posted 20 August 2016 Posted 20 August 2016 No complaints about our performance. Just didn't happen for us today. Clattenburg can take some responsibility for that. Huge improvement from last week and I'm gutted we didn't win tbh but we should be positive about ourselves.
Guest Col city fan Posted 20 August 2016 Posted 20 August 2016 Better showing. The clean sheet is exactly what we needed. However, that's 1 point from 6. And we managed one shot on target in 90 mins. So I'm pleased but we need to get some points on the board.

As with most of the team, far better than last week. Agreed, apart from one mistake he was very good.
Larry_LCFC Posted 20 August 2016 Posted 20 August 2016 What is it with Musa not wanting to shoot? Not just today but every game hes played so far. He seems to want to pass it on rather than shoot himself. Today he should have nestled that rebound into the net and instead passed it. So frustrating. Just shoot lad! Also, what the hell was king doing at that final free kick? Looks like its curling through the big gap into the bottom corner and King runs unmarked right in front of it.

Shows lack of confidence for me, if you are in such a position you must take the shot on. Despite that he is certainly comfortable on the ball and very direct which caused Arsenal problems

Quite hard to spot as you have to look almost straight up, the better one of the two IMO, the one leading to the main stand has a good city badge but the Vardy on the far right doesn't look much like him to me.
sdb Posted 20 August 2016 Posted 20 August 2016 So much happier than this time last week. Mendy could just fill the gap left by NG, we returned to playing our best XI, making sensible subs, and Riyad looked like his old self too. The hunger remains in the players and fans which was a relief too. Still think we can up it a gear as arsenal were well below par, but they did appear to have the man in the middle well on their side today.

dannythefox Posted 20 August 2016 Posted 20 August 2016 A lot better should of been 3 but happy with a point. Everyone was decent today, a solid performance.

Merging Cultures Posted 20 August 2016 Posted 20 August 2016 OK I'm watching the match a bit late, 37 mins, Mahrez covering for Simpson. Brilliant. Much better team performance this week
