My theory on Riyad Mahrez

Col is right. Love King but he isnt one fifth the player Kante is. Drinkwater is crying out for a good CM partner.

Wank today. He got the ball every other minute so can't complain about no service. He dug out one decent ball out of about two dozen oppurtunities to do so.

I thought he was one of our better players. He received some shocking looping passes and managed to dig something out and was our one creative outlet. Centre mid was the major problem again.

Made their fullback look quite good. Thought he was okay today. First assist of the season?

First PL assist. He's had couple of assists in the Champions League.

He'll get slated again because everyone think he's our Messi.

Col is right - without Kante to drive us forward and give him quick passes higher in the opposition half, we're not going to see the same Mahrez as last season. Today I thought he was out best player going forward and did well on a number of occasions. Yes he sometimes doesn't pass when he should or gives it away by taking too many touches, but all attacking flair players do the same. Without Mahrez we wouldn't have scored today. Teams are doubling/tripling up on him because they know we haven't got anybody else who will create anything for us. We need another central midfielder who will take risks by driving forward and playing forward passes and quick one twos. Andy King and especially Amartey are not going to worry opponents with their sideways/backwards passing. The sooner Mendy (or even Matty James) gets back into contention, the better it will be for Mahrez.

I thought he was shocking first half but excellent second. Stunned that we didn't score from one of the dozen times he walked past Nyom.

Totally agree. I have been trying to say the same thing all this time. He is not gonna score by moving the ball upfield from our box, dribbling 3 or 4 players and offering tap-ins to strikers. He needs midfielders to link up with him. Of course, he did that with Kante and Drinkwater last year. Kante is not here and Drinkwater has so many duties although he is still the one he links up with. The fact that Simpson stays behind does not help either. I think the solution is to change the system to a 4-3-3 featuring an attack-minded midfielder. Because of the current system predictability to the other teams, the usual Danny/King or Danny/Amartey combo is not gonna be efficient enough to assist the front players. I am not sure if a Danny/Mendy combo would do the trick. I can only hope.

Some of his first touches today were sublime. Shame he gets zero help from Simpson as an outlet.

Mahrez in a Chelsea or Arsenal side would look world class.

Wow. He was playing great today and assisted our ONLY goal and people dare to slate him. Those people don't deserve a player like him. . I am actually really mad about this. What do you want him to do.

Mahrez showed today that he can still make you pay if you give him the time and the space to get on his left foot to whip a cross in. We've also seen him lose the ball countless times as he attempts to set up his foot. It seems like every game he tries to cut inside across the 18 to find his left and that's when he gets closed down on and the defender nicks it away.

he was sensational second half. he's got the best first touch of any player to ever play football. not even arsed. every single long ball just sticks to his left toe.

Posted

His ball control is top notch and he often confuses defenders into what he's going to do next, which shows the quality of calibre he is. He's also becoming less greedy as well.

For the few faults that Mahrez has, he is the only person we have in midfield who can take players on and make things happen.

Drinky this season is having too many duties, defend-attack-link up play.

(once he adds goals to his game he will be a top quality player)

The sooner we buy a midfielder that carry the ball and drive at defences eg Silva/Sanchez (not that we can get either)

the sooner Mahrez/Drinky will get the extra space they need and form will return from last season.

As Kingy/Amartey/Mendy are not seen as a goal threat.

Before you jump on my back and accuse me of being rash or using him as a scapegoat for our perceived poor performances lately*, Hear me out, and bear in mind I've had this opinion of him for a very long time, even during our incredible title winning season:

Ok, here it goes: Riyad Mahrez is the most overrated player I think I've ever seen in a Leicester City shirt.

Yes, OK, he has his magic moments and was vital to our title winning team of last season, but lets be honest, he tries to do far too much by himself and more often than not this tends to end badly. with him either losing possession of the ball trying to do one too many clever tricks, or simply running the ball into dead ends. I have honestly never understood what all the hype is about with him. He is definitely not a team player, and at times like this, I believe we need team players more than the apparent individual "brilliance" Mahrez is supposed to possess.

I'm well aware that I'm going to be in a vast minority with this opinion, and I hope he goes on to prove me wrong this season, I really do, but I just can't see it happening.

*For the record, I don't believe we have been unacceptably poor, but more a case of we were spoilt last season and too many fans expect us to be pushing for higher things again this year.

I also find him ridiculously frustrating for lacking the ability to go simple at times. I don't agree he is the most overrated though. Plenty ahead of him I'd say.

He needs to rethink his game and maybe have a spell as a sub. It probably doesn't help when we automatically look to hit him with 90% of passes out when he is off form

I think we all know what Mahrez has in the locker and exactly what he is capable of, he just needs to utilise it better at times.

He is the kind of player who can do jack sh!t for 89 minutes then make you cream with one of his sublime touches.

I had to change my pants 3 times, once when Andy King had the ball (fear), once when Mahrez controlled the ball and once when.. ahh...the third was just an accident.

Good player and had an excellent season last year but I honestly think he is playing at his level now. He is not good enough to play for any team bigger than us. The talk of Barcelona is laughable. If he played for someone like arsenal their fans would be on his back before the end of his first game. Too inconsistent.

He is another one who seems to have lost a yard of pace this season.

I stopped reading after you called the first ever Leicester player to win the premier league player of the year our most 'overrated player ever'
