Buying the Tigers?

Recommended Posts

A Tigers fan has suggested in a letter to the Merc that  Leicester City owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha should buy the Tigers as they're struggling to compete with some of the newly rich Clubs.

How would you feel if that happened?

Depends if the Thais are into Rugby as well.

If they're not, it'd likely to be a recipe for disaster if they did buy them like quite a few American/Asian owners in English football clubs.

No point.

It works here not because they've got the money but because they're emotionally invested in football and Leicester City.

There are plenty of people in sport who think they can buy success but it takes a lot of hard work. Would they be willing to put that effort in alongside LCFC commitments and would they even be that arsed? There's little reward in Rugby and if you don't give a shit about the sport then why would you bother?

Right.

So we get years of living in the shadow of the great Leicester Tigers with scoffs of second rate club and Wendy ball and the minute we get some clout and some success they want a bit of it.

Think not. How about you sort your own investor and get your own money like we had to. I don't remember them ploughing money our way when we were going under.

Isn't there a cap on how much clubs can spend that stiffles Tigers anyway? We already have the biggest rugby ground in the country outside of Twickenham, discounting those who share with football clubs, and even then, we have the largest attendences. They've also rebuilt 3/4 of the ground in the last 20 years. I really don't think the problem is money, it's bad management.

Narh, Tigers are ridiculously outspent by Sarries and Wasps, both of whom have less income.

What they don't realise, however, is that our owners aren't just sugar daddy cash cows, they want lcfc to be viable and self sustainable as a business which is the same attitude that is holding the Tigers back anyway.

I thought that the wage cap in rugby was based more on a percentage of the income the clubs get?

If that is indeed so, what difference does it make how much money an owner has?

Rugby is shit.

Give your money to me if you want to waste it that bad.

buy them sell off both the grounds and build a new 50,000-60,000 capacity ground out of the city for both teams to share.

There was talk of the football and rugby teams sharing the Walker's (2011 I think), but the idea was thrown out of the window almost immediately.

No to sharing

No to out of the City

Because there's always a loop hole.

Almost nobody goes to watch Saracens, they've still bought every trophy they're eligible for it the last few years.

Yeah good point... its kind of  like one of our owners companies sponsoring us some crazy astronomical amount- suddenly the income goes up!

I know they play rugby in Japan but is premiership rugby on TV there? I can't see how this would raise the profile of their brand in Asia.

China's drive to become a rugby union superpower

Football's growth drive into China has hit the headlines over the past couple of years, with wealthy investors from the country buying clubs both at home and abroad.

Now rugby union is also looking for a blossoming of awareness and investment in the world's most populous nation, where the government has recently embarked on developing domestic sport over the coming decades.

Chinese authorities are making a concerted effort to increase sporting participation from grassroots to elite levels, as well as creating a flourishing sports business sector.

Meanwhile, governing body World Rugby is committed to growing the game in new markets, and promoting the sport beyond its traditional "comfort zones" of the European and southern hemisphere heavyweights.

It is looking for growth in many countries, including Brazil, India and Russia, but it is China where they have struck it big - signing a $100m (£80.5m) deal that involves a professional league, university programmes and grassroots initiatives.

"World Rugby's strategic mission is to grow the global rugby family," says World Rugby chief executive Brett Gosper, adding that China is "central to that mission".

Women's game

Rugby union is seen as a sport with huge potential in Asia, especially after its inclusion in the Olympics, and Japan's strong showing at the 2015 World Cup.

Japan will host the next World Cup in 2019, and is the dominant rugby power in the region, one that arch-rival China will be looking to challenge in the future.

Participation in the sport in China has increased by 40% in the past year to 76,000 players. The new initiative, signed in partnership with company Alisports, and the country's rugby football association, will see the former invest $100m over the next 10 years in an effort to further popularise the game.

Football is massive in Thailand, Rugby isn't and isn't going to be any time soon. As businessmen, buying Leicester Tigers surely doesn't appeal to them one bit. They won't make money back on them back home like they have with LCFC. Can't see it happening.

Yeah, it's a little too close to Coventry for my liking.

Coventry have nothing to do with Wasps, other than being their tenants at the Ricoh

I think he meant the town of Rugby.

I don't think the bloke who wrote the letter was being 100% serious. I read it as a bit tongue in cheek and just putting it out there to provoke a response. I wouldn't mind a jot if our owners invest a few million of their billions in the Tigers.

Either way, I don't understand the general disdain for the game of Rugby on this forum sometimes. As a fan of most sports and originally a Leicester boy, I always look out for the Tigers results and enjoyed their years of domestic domination and European glory. I wish them well and hope they get a Sugar Daddy investor if that's what they need to compete these days..

Rugby is riddled. All these wage caps are bollocks.

In in years gone by *star player*'s wife would be employed as a cleaner at the tiggers but be paid millions a year where *star players* salary is relatively low compared to his football playing counterpart.
