I mention Middlesboro, 5-0 down at half-time as I recall. I'm sure we could have done with a lot less of that sort of spirit, fight and loyalty. What? But surely this is blasphemy? Walsh was a Leicester legend if ever there was one. He might have seen red a few times but never went missing. By sheer will and force of personality became a giant of a player. It had to be Walshie that dragged that awful team of crocks into the premier league by beating Derby at Wembley. Remember that team? Ormondroyd, Carey, Willis, Coatsworth... Walshie won it single handedly, Roy of the Rovers style. Walsh, Elliott, Taggart were a ring of steel.
shen Posted 1 January 2017 Posted 1 January 2017 Surprised Lineker doesn't get more mentions. And Vardy for that matter as well. I guess Mahrez and Kanté eclipsed the latter last season, but Vardy really was scintillating for the majority of 2015. Never seen such great work rate, electric pace and direct play.
apollo4joe Posted 1 January 2017 Posted 1 January 2017 Great topic, and I don't necessarily disagree with what anyone has said. Without sounding condescending I wonder if younger supporters realise how much Steve Walsh actually gave to us and what he meant to us in the 90's before he was crudely shipped out by Taylor. He was literally a god for us, before last season if we were going to have a statue it should've been him. I still think he should have one for everything he did and gave to the club. But Kane and Mahrez last season were out of this world, even if Kante couldn't wait to leave. Honourable mention for Muzzy Izzet too, what a player he was.
Kinowe Soorie Posted 1 January 2017 Posted 1 January 2017 Only one mention for Pontus Kåmark so far but he was absolute class. Injuries massively affected his career, but how he nullified Juninho against Middlesbrough, it was a defensive master class! You could probably say the whole of last seasons squad...
fuchsntf Posted 1 January 2017 Posted 1 January 2017 Its simple.... Over a season one can stand out, even in our title winning year, imo a few of those legends deserved their plaudits for various reasons. Kante, Mahrez, Vardy, DDrinkwater stood out, but 1 season doesnt make a best player... The ones playing now, have not yet finished their history making... There are in our history better players, because they did their business over a few seasons, some with clubs before they joined us, others carried on at top levels after they left us... The thread states "Leicester History" So we are then split with young fans, who havent seen more than 4 seasons, then young but older fans who have 10-12 years under their belt.Stretching through then to fans like myself who go back to the end of the 50s ,maybe even those few now who can go back into the 40s. MClintock, D.Gibson, Rowley, Riley, Revie, never forgetting the great K.Weller, plus maybe upto 20- + more true Leicester top notch players..From the backline spiralling through great midfielders to a wealth of strikers. For me , not many would get by Davie Gibson and the.... Ronaldo- Hazard mix ...of Mr Keith Weller .Keith was the complete player for me. That said, other eras brought their great individual/team players. Parker, Izzet, Lennon, Lynex, lineker, and that master striker Worthington. but would you split the difference with a fit Stringfellow, Rowley, or that flexable magician D.Nish. Never seen him play, but my dad always spoke over 6 Swans Chandler... So as much as I like him and he is on the right tracks, Mahrez has a career to get through, plus Weller/lynex were coincidently pretty good in defencive duties.I would not though ever put that down as a negative against Riyhad, his foward moves, touches along the front line carving paths through midfield are as good as anybodies, from far, near past and present.. now he needs to find 2-3 extra seasons consistency... Then he just might..!!!! reach that Nirvana, the extra hight above legend.
filbertway Posted 1 January 2017 Posted 1 January 2017 Can only really remember the past 15 years, so it's got to be Kanté for me by a country mile. Never seen a player consistantly put in 8/10 (minimum) performances in week in week out. You could tell he was destined to move on to bigger and better things. If he's not at Real Madrid in the next 3 seasons I'll be shocked.
fuchsntf Posted 1 January 2017 Posted 1 January 2017 Oh..!! On this thread, though repeated nearly every season....some bloody great calls. Not one serious input would I try to argue with, they all carry their own merit..
49er Posted 1 January 2017 Posted 1 January 2017 Surprised that no one has thrown Alan Smith into the mix. Certainly not the best or most talented, but he came into the side following a £12,000 move from non league Alechurch and hit it off straight away with Lineker and Lynex. Wonderful close control and distribution for such a tall man, good in the air and someone who genuinely tried hard every game he played. I think that the forward line of Smith, Lineker and Lynex was perhaps the most exciting we have had until last season. They were almost guaranteed to score 40-50 goals between them in a season. Lynex is probably one of the best wingers we have had. Teasing the full back, darting past him and drilling a cross in for Lineker and Smith. We don't really see wingers of his ilk in today's game. There is nothing better than seeing the likes of Dave Thomas (QPR), Gordon Hill (Man Utd), Steve Heighway (Liverpool), Alan Hinton (Derby) outpacing their man and getting to the bye line.
aussie-fox Posted 1 January 2017 Posted 1 January 2017 mahrez - most skillful Kante - Best those two are so much ahead of what ive ever seen at leicester
ithuriel Posted 1 January 2017 Posted 1 January 2017 You could just make a best of 11 again which would be interesting in regards to wingers because we have had some decent ones over the years. Guppy would probably take the left spot though

Kante now looks the better player but in a Leicester shirt Mahrez was better, so it has to be Mahrez. After those pair honourable mentions to Izzet, Lennon and Heskey. Absolute bollocks! We have seen how shit we are now without Kante! Where as Mahrez is still here and not doing great! It's Kante and by a massive distance.
Old Fox Posted 1 January 2017 Posted 1 January 2017 In my lifetime......Lineker, Smith, Macdonald, McAllister, Izzet, Lennon were great especially Gary because as a kid he scored for fun and alongside Lynex and Smudger they were superb however, Mahrez is the most skilful but Kante will probably get my vote. Mahrez could go on to be world class but time will tell if he is willing to work at his game like the greats of Messi, Renaldo and Bale all of whom work and practice tirelessly with great attitude.

MacDonald always seemed to have time , which is a sign of a class player. Reverted to centre half during our promotion campaign in 1982-83, and took to it like a duck to water. Always remember his cheeky back headers to Wallington - only he could do that and get away with it.

Ask yourself this honest question..Though impossible to prove one way or the other. Would Kante have hepled us make a better job of this season...?? Now He can cover his negatives, he has better players around him, so he can lift his form, when misfiring. HOW Would he handle 8-9 mates off form or off the pace..???

foxile5 Posted 1 January 2017 Posted 1 January 2017 Too subjective to get a definite answer. Mark Davies was ****ing brilliant.... At that particular moment in time.

The fact that Kante is better than Mahrez this season is irrelevant to me because he's not in a Leicester shirt anymore. Mahrez has performed better in a Leicester shirt than anyone else.

And allowed his teammates to concede 6 in one game. I travelled thousands of miles to watch my team to be rewarded by that idiot lamping someone and making it all pointless. Stop with the rose tinted specs and think Big Was with a nasty streak, an uncontrollable temper and an inability to play football. I dont get where this "gave everything" comes from. Wikipaedia has it that the fans nicknamed him "Captain Fantastic". Really? Did we? As I recall we called him a lot of things but that was never one of them. Maybe the extra 25,000 that went to Wembley did but I dont recall any of the 12-15,000 regulars at filbert street calling him that. Nope the winner v Derby didnt hurt. I can go batfaced at any City goal with the best of them. Law of averages says he was going to be in the right place at the right time every now and again but he wasnt the best centre half we ever had, he wasnt the best striker either and as a leader of men, if getting yourself sent of because someone looked at him a bit funny, well... 3 hours ago, Bob Weasel Fox said: I would take the Walsh years of loyalty over some of the money grabbing cvnts we've had Wise springs to mind the little boz eyed fvcktard No argument over money grabbers and Wise was just unspeakable but loyalty? I dont remember the constant stream of offers for him. If loyalty is staying because you have no other option and cant leave, then yep he was loyal. The club were loyal to him and so were the fans but I dont remember getting much back. Bang average but has managed to carve himself a niche by bagging a couple of high profile goals.

majaco Posted 2 January 2017 Posted 2 January 2017 I have seen two world class players in a Leicester shirt: Cambiasso and Kante. Shilton I barely remember. Lineker became world class when he left. Vardy has made a priceless contrivution but... Mahrez has unbelievable ability and may claim world class status in the future.
