Hernandez was signed to provide this mythical "competition for places" that everyone goes on about. So was Mendy, so was Musa. They all came in as unknowns who would have to compete with existing first teamers to get a starting birth. You could argue that Mendy was a little different becasue Kante left, but he was still competing with others at a similar level. The "Hernandez wasn't a right back" thing doesn't really work either becasue we haven't given Musa the chance to nail down his best starting position ie is he a winger or a striker as nobody really knows. It's a perfectly reasonable comparison to make imo. Where was Hernandez actively and openly touted as "competition for places"? We signed him on a free, adding depth in squad. How he was supposed to get past Morgan and/or Huth following our league title win and that in his first season in English football, I'll never know. Both with Hernandez and Mendy, I find it extremely harsh to judge (former) players after four meagre league outings. Musa has had twenty opportunities in the league by now, five in the Champions League, four in the FA Cup. You'll agree that it gives a much better picture when you look at players with seven times the amount of games played. As for the question regarding Musa's preferred role, it appears he himself doesn't really know...

That's why I think he's most at risk out of all of them to make a swift return to France. We have a few people who can cover that, even DD is a decent DM if you just wanted him to do that. We need a real creative talent and I can see us swapping him. Very true. Still genuinely believe he has creativity, but as you say, best used in a 3. Therefore, If he's the player we build the team around, then I would never have guessed that.

polarbear Posted 26 April 2017 Posted 26 April 2017 anyone who listened to stringers football forum on monday (not many i suspect), in an interview with Shakey he was very positive about mendys abilities. i can see shakey giving him a chance during pre season

Hernandez was certainly binned too early and would probably be playing at the moment if he were still here. Ranieri is largely at fault for them all looking so doggo. @Struwwelpeter60

Ian Nacho Posted 26 April 2017 Posted 26 April 2017 We can't judge him yet as he picked up an ankle injury on his debut against Arsenal, which I thought he played quite well up until then. He had surgery on the ankle after the injury but the surgery went wrong and hasn't been right since and he's had several operations since so to be fair to the lad if he's got a dodgy ankle you can't blame him for not playing to a high enough standard. Shakey is probably just ruling him out for the season just to give him the most recovery time.
Fox92 Posted 27 April 2017 Posted 27 April 2017 Waste of money. Waste of time. And to think Ranieri wanted him instead of Kante, good grief.
les-tah Posted 27 April 2017 Posted 27 April 2017 regardless of how good Mendy is or could be.. that also goes for James Drinky Amartey King ndidi etc we still need an Attacking minded creative center mid.. Critically.

Probably means he gets plenty of chance to run in behind these teams. Argentina and Barca don't care about defending? Since when? Obviously you haven't watched those games.

The average age of our team (with Kapustka, Chilwell, Amartey,Gray) was lower than that of Barca. 2. Look again at his second goal. There was almost no space at all. 3. When he scored his first one, Busquets and Mascherano were defending for Barca. Both have lots of experience under their belts.
sm1 Posted 27 April 2017 Posted 27 April 2017 Whatever anybody says, they were 2 sensational goals from Musa. He was also our best player in the opening game against Hull. I think he's just lost confidence and nobody knows what his best position is, sad really to see him go from Barca to his dog shit performances against Millwall and Everton. Personally, the little i've seen of Mendy, i think he's a decent player too and definitely deserves another season to prove his worth.

Actually agree with the majority of this, although against hull it was hard to pick out any good performances tbh but I thought in the following game vs Arsenal his impact off the bench was superb and was unlucky not to win a penalty. Other noticible performances against Everton (cup), palace home and Spurs away showed flashes of what he is capable of. What's really done it for me though is his lack of consistency, it literally takes him three bad games to have a good one and it's infuriating. Tbf his price tag hasn't helped him but I personally have lost patience with musa. with regards to Mendy he was my motm against Everton in the cup and I thought he would kick on from that, shakeys comments suggest he's never been 100%, willing to give him another season to prove his fitness and worth
teblin Posted 28 April 2017 Posted 28 April 2017 Don't think we should write him off completely. Anyone that says injury doesn't hold you back is crazy. If you are a builder but have hurt your back you won't do it quite as well if you haven't. hopefully he get a full pre season and we see the best of him next season

Chico1958 Posted 29 April 2017 Posted 29 April 2017 I know I've said something like this before but here we go again Shakespeare ( If he gets the job ) will decide who's best for the Team He know's them best, as for all the new players, they have a clean slate at the end of the season from me Up until the Liverpool game I could've named at least 4-5 players who could have been shipped out. Musa's had so much turmoil going on in his life, Mendy's hasn't been able to play, for whatever reason, Slimani been bit part mainly through injury. If a New Guy comes in then he will have to take the decision............... it'll be his call
