MC Prussian Posted 6 April 2017 Posted 6 April 2017 German weekly SportBILD claims we're after Leverkusen's Roger Schmidt, alongside West Ham and Everton. Schmidt is still on a contract with Bayer 04 until the end of the 2018/19 Bundesliga season, but would be able to walk in the summer for 3.5m Euro (£3m). In his three years at the Werkself, he has overseen the rise of five pros to national team players (Leno, Tah, Henrichs, Brandt, Bellarabi). Judging by his attacking style of play with Leverkusen, he'd be a great fit. Problem is - with Shakespeare doing so well right now, would we have to change it at all? I would imagine Shakespeare being more happy in an assistant manager role, so why not?
casablancas Posted 6 April 2017 Posted 6 April 2017 A fine manager but I see no reason to not give shakey the role. But depends if the owners want a name.
Jiggers the Fox Posted 6 April 2017 Posted 6 April 2017 They also report the Musa story using a picture of Amartey so I'm not sure what to believe.

SportBILD and BILD (tabloid newspaper) don't share the same staff, they are two different publications altogether. Although the Musa picture mishap is a funny find.
Koke Posted 6 April 2017 Posted 6 April 2017 Why would Everton be after him when they got Koeman? Schmidt is a fine manager. Things had gone a bit stale at Leverkusen but his style would fit us. I'm a big fan of Shakespeare but I can't help to think back to Rob Kelly who also ended the season with a good run as a caretaker manager.
les-tah Posted 6 April 2017 Posted 6 April 2017 Difference between us and Germany is the Germans give their homegrown managers a chance. If the English followed we would have far more successful managers instead of going abroad all the time! Give Shakesphere a chance!

That's the fear I'd have aswell. Could also be argued that any manager would have struggled a decade ago given the state of the club and maybe Shakespeare has proven himself a bit longer for it.

And just to clarify: Schmidt to Leicester would be a summer move, not one for now.
Tuna Posted 6 April 2017 Posted 6 April 2017 If I was Shakey and was told I'd be going back to no.2...obviously depending on where we finish but finishing higher than 12th and where we already are in the Champions League...would be deemed an exceptional job in the circumstances...I'd resign and get a job elsewhere. Shakey has shown he's capable and would be a good candidate for a Norwich or Birmingham in the championship.
Guest CityFan 06 Posted 6 April 2017 Posted 6 April 2017 He's a good manager, but it'd be very harsh for Shakespeare to not get the job with what he has done. At the moment we're 10th, and if we can finish in the top ten that'd be excellent given our season before all this. Top ten is a realistic ambition for the club, if Shakespeare can deliver that after the minimum games in charge, I'd like to see him have the job next season. If we get top ten this season, it's very possible Shakespeare could get us into the top ten next season too, which is what we want; progression and establishment as a top side in England's highest division of football. I'm hoping if it is Shakespeare who gets the permanent role, we go back to having expert recruitment, which is what is going to bring us success like it did under Walsh.
Guest Sharpe's Fox Posted 6 April 2017 Posted 6 April 2017 Shakey won't stay if we start shopping around. I'm not going to accept losing the last of the Pearson-Shakespeare-Walsh axis that has basically built our club from nothing since our lowest point in League 1.
Max Power Posted 6 April 2017 Posted 6 April 2017 Tbh we don't even know if Shakey wants the job on a long term basis. Maybe stepping back into an assistant role, focussing on the players and the training ground is what he enjoys the most.
Captain... Posted 6 April 2017 Posted 6 April 2017 Shakespeare has been around for everything good that has happened at this club in the last decade. He has the trust of the players and the staff and has proven his ability to manage this team. There is one question really, does Craig want the manager's job? If he does then it should be his, but maybe he enjoys the hands on coaching role and prefers doing his work out of the limelight and away from the pressure of being manager. Anyone we bring in in any capacity has to understand that this man knows our club inside out and needs to work with him.
goose2010 Posted 6 April 2017 Posted 6 April 2017 exactly he might just want to go back to doing what he was doing and would you blame him? 5 or 6 bad results and next thing you know you are out on your ear, probably having to go down a division or two to get back into a job. He has proved he can cope in the top flight but its just if he wants to step up. I know at where i work if the managers job came up i would have to think about it before i took it, and i probably wouldnt want it.
Ted Maul Posted 6 April 2017 Posted 6 April 2017 I can say with a fair amount of certainty that I would be far more upset if we got rid of Shakey than I was when we binned Claudio.

Anyone we bring in in any capacity has to understand that this man knows our club inside out and needs to work with him. It's a tricky one. Shakespeare has had a taste and now has full responsibility until the end of the season. Should he step back into an assistant role, it could jeopardize a new manager's influence on the team. I feel we need a manager that cuts his cloth according to our club, and not the other way around. That means having a more hands off approach and being a coordinator and having a good outwardly image. At the same time he would need a vision for the future that is shared by the staff as players are nearing the end of their Premier League careers.
Gerard Posted 6 April 2017 Posted 6 April 2017 Shaky has done magnificent so far, any criticism of him so far would be nit picking in the extreme. If it was my decision then for Shaky to get the job I'd want to see a presentation by him on how he plans to take the club forward with playing style and new players. A cynic could say what he's done so far has been relatively easy in reverting back to the style and personnel that won the league. The big question is does he have a vision to drive us forward or is his skill set best left as a No 2 and a top class coach and a man the players respect but treat as a bridge between them and the manager? I thought this Schmidt was sacked from Bayer a month or two a go and would have been ideal for us then but I didn't realise he was still on gardening leave. It might be the best course of action would be to give Shaky a huge bonus for this season and insist on Schmidt keeping him as his No2. A tough one for the club and a lot of it will depend on Shaky's ambition to be a manager.
sylofox Posted 6 April 2017 Posted 6 April 2017 From what I was told before he's was named if the season finished today the job is his. A top 12 finish gets him the job and yes he does want the job.
Lovejoy Posted 6 April 2017 Posted 6 April 2017 Wasn't Schmidt recently fired by Leverkusen? Was there anything more to it than poor results? Their squad is too good for mid table.

Question now is whether Leverkusen will want to part with £3m this summer or spend a whopping £6m until Schmidt's contract expires.
les-tah Posted 6 April 2017 Posted 6 April 2017 I Imagine Shakey negotiated a nice bonuses depending on us staying up and our table finish. I also assume he will be weighing up the decision on whether he would like to be number 2 for a long time or risk it being a manager in a cut throat league in which a few bad results could mean a sack all together.

Rob Kelly never had the experience of Shakespeare. Shakey has learned the tricks of the trade from two very good managers. He's learned what it takes to build a clubs foundations from Pearson & he's learned the tactical side of the game from Claudio. Before he came to us, Kelly only had coaching experience at youth level so him stepping up as manager was always a big ask. The two situations aren't really comparable.

That's disingenuous, he's completed the UEFA Pro License and been a coach for years so he hasn't just all of a sudden picked up tactical knowledge.
Webbo Posted 6 April 2017 Posted 6 April 2017 I don't think Shakey will want to be assistant again. he'll either get the job in the summer or leave. If there's anything in this story it'll just be the owners sounding him, along with others, out in case they do decide to go for a new manager next season
