Madrid (A) - Where we drinking ?

Recommended Posts

Under a week to go to the biggest game in our history (feels like we say that every couple of weeks nowadays) where are we all meeting up and drinking ? Plaza Mayor seems to be the place usually and the weather seems like it will be very decent.

We've tended to have gone to the allocated bars early doors and then a bit of a bar crawl around the city before heading to the ground. Nice to see a bit of the city.

Any recommendations of some good pubs/bars would be appreciated.

I cant wait for this. Get to my uncles Villa for midday Tuesday so a day by the pool with crates of beer. Then drive to Madrid early Wednesday and park up at the hotel, collect tickets and find the pubs.

Thursday drive back to the Villa (so no rushing around getting to the airport) before getting to the Airport Friday afternoon. Lovely

Please don't take this as snobbery, but I'm not a heavy drinker, so would enjoy meeting up with people who'd like to explore a bit as well as enjoy themselves.

Try these guys, a few of them are now in there 50's and 60's, there will be a few out there, I plan to kick about with a few of them, for the same reason, I love a beer, but how I was still standing in brugge I don't know and I was only there 2 days, 5 days in madrid, think I may need a bit of culture and more local goings on, the square can wait for match day lol I used them as tour guides for porto as they are a nice enough bunch, I also binned of the o'neills in Sevilla to meet up with them in the old town for some tapas and a more relaxed beer.

I know some of them arrive sunday so they will have done a bit of looking about for bars, food places etc, off the beaten track no doubt.

Not snobbery mate, I've loved exploring new places as much as having a few beers.

I have been Madrid 3 times before and I would say get yourself on Tripadvisor and check out the hidden gems/ top attractions. I know it appeals to a lot of people but spending 2 days in an Irish bar when you have the chance to explore a new city and have a few beers In nicer bars is more my kind of thing.

Best thing about being a sports fan, I have been to some random places abroad that I never would have before and had a great time.

Plaza Mayor is perfect for a meet up. Up there with the most majestic squares in Europe. Sol is also worth a wander around.

Bar El Tigre, just off the Grand Via is a good option for those on a budget as you get free tapas with every drink, decent portions.

Bar Marmita near to Sol is a lovely family run bar/tapas house, nothing spectacular but good food & drink at reasonable prices.

Madrid is a great city for wandering about in no particular direction & seeing what you stumble upon.

plaza mayor is where the police escort will be from as its 20mins to the ground. Pricey as its tourist trap. On the tuesday if anyone is in town the James Joyce is showing both the champions league games.  Not many of us who live in Madrid but thats where we celebrated winning the league last year, also a real Madrid irish pub so good atmosphere for footie.

So Plaza Mayor seems to be the place to go. A few questions, will there be beer sold there or is it a case of taking a few cans?

@BrummieFOX you mention 'allocated bars' so will there be a list published and we all go there/to them or is it just word of mouth when you get there.

There's plenty of bars there. It's probably the most you'll spend on a beer in Madrid though. No idea if you're allowed to drink cans in there

If you're around for a few days, may be better to visit historic cities a short trip away - Segovia, Toledo, Avila or Alcala de Henares. Train/bus services are fairly good.

Within Madrid my preference would be to avoid the Plaza Mayor and the Puerta del Sol - yes you'll be with fellow football fans but you'll be charged more and be treated worse.

Three zones worth exploring for bars, cafes etc  - Malasana - there is a famous expats pub called the Triskel, and generally a well informed clientele. Some great places to sit in the sun, but they do get packed quickly after 2pm.  Then there is Lavapies, south of Puerta del Sol - lots of bars including Indian curry places. Don't get caught on your own at night here, still some dodgy types around.  Another zone next to Malasana is Conde Duque and worth settling in for an evening stroll and nosh.

If you need to be near the Plaza Mayor, you can cut costs by finding a bar nearby (ie not in the square) and drinking at the bar. Of course you may prefer to take advantage of the setting, but you will pay for it through the nose.
