Our style of attack might have become more / entirely focused on direct counters. But our game plan way to keep it tight and try and nick one. Or are you actually attempting to suggest our style of play wasn't focused on defend first attack later. How we played at Arsenal was almost no different to how we played against spurs when we won 1-0. Difference being then didn't fluke a deflection and we scored a very rare venture up field.

Much like the game at Arsenal and at Man City until we were 2-0 down this season. What Pearson has to do with it, is that much of Shakespeares time as an assistant manager, has been under the guidance of Pearson, and my concern is that he was starting to turn to the same negative tactics that he had been a part of, while working with Pearson, that had seen us rock bottom of the league for three quarters of a season. Correct in its entirety.

That Spurs game I don't think was generally representative of how the season was for us in this regard. I think the point being made by Smudger is that in the title winning season we were always a threat in games in the round, and while were invariably surrendering the lions share of possession we were in control of games and creating chances. We were looking to win games when we did have the ball. When we had the ball we were proactive. That was not the case for 70% of the Great Escape season. My understanding is Shakes had a very big part to play in games tactically with Pearson at the helm, and albeit a small sample of games that are being highlighted there are parallels to be drawn with those previous negative displays and those in the last 10 games.

It's also a ridiculously small sample to be trumping up right now. 7 minutes ago, NotTheMarketLeader said: I think the point being made by Smudger is that in the title winning season we were always a threat in games in the round, and while were invariably surrendering the lions share of possession we were in control of games and creating chances. There was a large number of games where we scraped through being very defensive. Especially at the end of the season where we needed to scramble through any way we could. Lets not forget we weren't safe and were trying to do exactly the same at the end of this season.
foxfanazer Posted 30 May 2017 Posted 30 May 2017 This needs sorting now. Teams already getting business done and we can't decide who's going to be in charge. I know someone will reply to this with 'we're still in may' but it was the lack of organisation last pre season that saw us start so badly

I've said it's a small sample, and it will all come out in the wash no doubt. Do you mean the end of last season we were being very defensive? If so that's not memory of it. We were being given more of the ball, and defences were now deep, not giving us the space in behind. We were finding it difficult to break teams down - the string of 1 nils is evidence - but I don't think we were aiming to be defensive, it was more other teams setting up to nullify our greatest threats once the penny had dropped that we were not a 'flash in the pan'.

Some of that was to do with the other teams adapting. But as I said at the time it was clear to me we were progressively getting more and more defensive under Ranieri as time ticked on. We started off quite gung-ho bringing in our "shit or bust" attitude from the great escape, but his changes were slowing strangling the creativity out of us and that showed up even more this season. Out of all our games at Arsenal, our best performance in terms of attacking was probably under Pearson there. He's worked under two defensively minded managers, bringing up Pearson for me is just people bringing there prejudice about him back into it. We were at our best when we still had a mix of the freedom the players got from Pearson from Christmas onwards, mixed with the better defensive shape of Ranieri. Hopefully he gets that mix right, he tried to be positive against Spurs and got lambasted. I think it's a good sign he'd rather try and get back into a game that just sit on a 3-1 defeat.

Great post. I really wish we'd had more games which to test out the theory. If he has reverted to Pearson's 2014-2015 pre-great escape tactics there's no reason to think he'll continue down that vein. But it's a risk.
