AjcW Posted 20 June 2017 Posted 20 June 2017 I can see him doing a fair bit of the press work next season too, as someone who knows how to handle all that and has had to make time for it before. As composed as Shakey was at itlast season it never struck me as something he wanted to do and im sure he'd much rather be in the changing room/on the training ground.
Thracian Posted 20 June 2017 Posted 20 June 2017 Massively positive appointment to me in terms of recruitment, player development, added authority and team emphasis. I've long been concerned about our being able to put the finishing touch to Academy players who have the ability to reach first team level and this guy may well do the trick. I imagine it'll be almost a dual authority partnership like Clough and Taylor. .
HoustonFox Posted 20 June 2017 Posted 20 June 2017 Great coup to get a top English coaching talent to join the back room. He likes his teams to play dynamic attacking football, and so does Shaky. Interesting times ahead this season. Not been this excited since...well, last preseason!

And in the other thread someone said he was heavily into passing football, even to a fault. Obviously I've not seen Oxford actually play or anything...

ajthefox Posted 20 June 2017 Posted 20 June 2017 A fair few seem to think it's a step backwards for him. Can see the logic but I think they may be forgetting our trajectory over the last few years. This one took the absolute biscuit though: Quote He has made huge career mistakes by going to 3 clubs in serious trouble. Does the guy never learn, because LCFC is doomed to failure under Shakespeare. If Shakespeare is fired, then Appy goes, 100% no doubt. Seems to know something no-one at our club does...

brucey Posted 20 June 2017 Posted 20 June 2017 Positives/negatives from an oxford fan.. sounds a bit like Pearson? Quote - MApp is known for jumping ship to find a better deal, especially if the money is better. Not surprised to see him follow the cash - I hear Leicester have upped his salary by around 5 times.- Keeping Mapp would have put a sizeable dent in the playing budget, if the above is correct.- Feeling is within the game MApp also wanted to 'cash out' his kudos for what he achieved at Oxford. If he had a mediocre season, he'd be stuck. Finally, from a personal view, I actually thought we needed a change to move on. Now was not an ideal time, obviously though. We seemed to get 'out-thought' a lot last year. Teams set up differently to frustrate us, and we would just play our normal game. There was a reluctance to accept certain players and formations would do better in certain games. There was also a 'get all the best players on the pitch, regardless of their position' policy, which annoyed me, and I know annoys players. We could outplay most in L2 with our plan a. Teams have bigger scouting budgets in L1, they knew what was coming and adjusted, we didn't.The things that he did well, will hopefully stay after he's gone. The recruitment policy/network, MApp's legacy to the club, is outstanding. As is the commitment to developing academy players.

If Appleton does a great job as AM and the players respect him and enjoy working with him, then who knows what the future might hold for him? He may end up following exactly the same progression as Shakey has done with us. And it might all be part of Top's master succession plan. Maybe from now on we'll now be adopting the old Liverpool 'boot-room' philosophy of appointing from within? Never say never in football... Correct. Very early to say that he'd become our next manager but you can't rule it out either. Some people cannot look past results only. Failure to take into account the situations of the clubs he was in is mental given what a shambles they were. Quite why he made the same mistake three times though I've no idea. He's had his break at Oxford and he could go on to be excellent. Who knows.
EnglishOxide Posted 20 June 2017 Posted 20 June 2017 Apparently he was touted to be an academy coach at Man Utd before he started his managerial career. When a club of that size looks to put you on the coaching team you would expect the guy to be very good at what he does behind the scenes. This has a very good feel to it.

Grantham Fox Posted 21 June 2017 Posted 21 June 2017 Happy with this. Knows Shakey and did a really good job at Oxford.
MC Prussian Posted 21 June 2017 Posted 21 June 2017 Great addition to our staff, but from what the BBC Radio Oxford guy was saying on the radio on Monday, it's a slightly odd move for a highly ambitious manager who'd rather remain the leader of the pack than playing second fiddle. I guess the overall package (£££), the facilities and being able to work in the Premier League made all the difference. Welcome to the club, Michael! Here's to a successful stint at LCFC.
Thracian Posted 21 June 2017 Posted 21 June 2017 7 hours ago, HoustonFox said: Ambition 17? Hope he hasn't got delusions of grandeur! The big strength in that chart is "youth" and that's something our owners have been investing in with vigour. Given that strategy, we badly need to get more of these talented youngsters through to senior team standard and, hopefully, at the same rate as clubs like Southampton. It's not just about the financial benefits. Youngsters can be evolved according to the ethos of our club and by the time they reach our Premiership squad can fit seamlessly into the scheme of things. Success becomes self repeating because the more young players we get achieving high standards the more newcomes are surrounded by people setting those standards so they never know anything less to target themselves. It happens in many sports. Get a club with, say, an olympic champion and it breeds another. Get several champions and it begets more still. Because people copy and absorb the routines, attitudes and work ethic which they've seen to bring success. .
Finnaldo Posted 21 June 2017 Posted 21 June 2017 I think there is a logic behind coming here as an assistant manager rather than stay on at Oxford, there's monetary and status-wise especially if he's ambitious as some Ox fans seem to suggest. The monetary one is quite clear seeing as we're paying him about 5x his salary at Oxford, but there also seems to be a somewhat unfair stigma about promising League One/Two managers and the glass ceiling to the Championship can often keep them in the lower leagues unless they force themselves into the Championship. I'd go as far to say you're more likely to get a job in the top two leagues having a decent managerial tenure in the lower leagues alongside one of the senior coaching roles at a Premier League side than just a longer and more successful stint in the lower leagues. Plus regardless I'm sure Shakey, like Maguire, would have sold the vision to him to bring more and more success to the club. Who knows, another successful European campaign in a couple years and the value and prestige of that no.2 spot sky rockets. I can definitely see why he took it and I'm quite excited to have him in the coaching staff for next season, we could assemble quite the team as a whole with a good window and then who knows what?
