Gambling

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I am sorry to bother you with such a boring and non LCFC subject but was hoping my fellow foxes could help me with some info. I understand that gambling is generally stacked against you but are there other issues involved. What I mean is that, is a Sunday a bad day for hitting Fruit machines due to them generally being emptied on a Saturday night?

and the other thing is about the machines in bookies. I often play blackjack on the machines in the bookies, I know I shouldn't, but as random as they claim to be, it seems a little dodgy. I play four hands against their one hand and more often than not their one hand wins. As I look at it that is a 1/5 chance of winning and they manage it so often. I have read online and most forums say they have to follow gambling legislation but let's be honest, do they really? If someone has a little bit of info more than "there is only one winner" then let me know as it seems so fixed and I want to smash the machines.

thanks

Gudjy

Having worked in a pub, I can tell you fruit machines don't get emptied. They get stocked up with pound coins every morning.

Also, having worked in a bookies, an fobt is more likely to pay out on a Sunday, because the bookies can't take their profits to the bank. That is a fact.

However, if you play anything like that, you are a mug. It's a bloody computer, you will never win. I've seen it myself.

I've seen people turn 20 quid into a grand, however, they put it all back in and more, because of greed.

There is no form of gambling that isn't bent. Do a fiver a week on a couple of footy accas and sensibly invest the rest. Seriously.

I'll explain the fobt paying out more on a Sunday...

Bookies are incredibly security orientated.

They want minumum cash on the premises at all times.

You'd bank takings every day, but the post office closes at 12 on a Saturday. This is before you take much cash, but Saturday afternoons are the busiest period.

There is an insane amount of cash in the shop until Monday morning. I'm talking like a pretty quiet shop having 20k in the safe.

They'd rather keep the idiots happy and pay them, reducing the risk to staff being robbed.

They know the said idiots will go home, come back the next day and give you the money back. Plus more.

It's a better interest rate than having it in a bank.

Plus I'd get a tip out of it!

Edit: I've actually seen someone win 5k and give me a £50 tip. The next day, they asked if they could have my £50 tip back.

The scary thing is, I'm not even joking.

Tried it a couple of times

Won some.......... lost more

Now I have a pretty healthy bank account, a house, two cars and a bike.

So my advice would be leave it in your pocket or bank account and hope the interest rates go up.

Ps: It's not a big house, they're nothing special cars, the bikes seen better days and the bank account ain't huge, it's ok.

But I'm happy

Gambling is stupid man don't bother with it. There's only ever one winner.

When I first turned 18 I used to chuck a couple of quid on those roulette machines but never win that much back. I once saw a woman cover every number apart from 0 (there was about £50 on) and 0 came out. It knows what to do.

I occasionally put a couple of quid on football now and then if I'm walking past on a Friday but that's it.

I can't believe how big gambling is now and how many shops there is in town. One after the other, one opposite another. Gambling is an addiction - just like drinking and smoking - it needs to be cut out.

One of my mates won about 6k on an acca... collected in store... they could only pay a certain amount in cash. Pretty sure it was less than 1k too.

Yeah exactly.

One of the morning tasks everyday is to check outstanding payments.

If you've got a biggie, you don't bank. Or you ring another store locally who bring their banking cash to you.

Punters want there and then. They get pretty pissed when you tell them you don't have it.

Fobts are evil, I've been addicted for years, dropped a grand in one yesterday from a shop I excluded from, lol what a joke that process is, nobody said boo.

Gambling addiction is horrible, it's crazy how you just dissociate from rationality and your normal personality, it just takes over. It makes me sick to my stomach to think of how much money I have mindlessly fed into those things.

Anyone reading this, take my advice (excuse the cliches) the bookies always win, there is no such thing as a winner just a prolonged loser.

Dont play them if you are prone to impulsiveness they will RUIN your life, as they nearly have mine.

Anyone know if going to the gp will yield proper therapy on the NHS, I've tried counselling through gamcare but it only works temporarily for me. One little trigger and bang keybet/deal or no deal roulette. Pathetic really.

Been there, done that. Had to take a loan out to pay my humungous losses. Stopped gambling for 2 years, started back up. Lost a bit, won a load. Lost a bit, won a load. It's gone like that for a good 18 months now and I'm acutely aware I have to retain discipline otherwise the decent wins I've had which so far I've put to good use, will all go and then some on top until I'm feeling sick and my life is in ruins.

FOBTs are the absolute pits, they are glorified fruit machines but whereas your old favourite bandit would require only £100 or so for guaranteed jackpot, these pigs can takes thousands without giving you much more than a token few quid, it's immoral. I cannot emphasise how bad they are, they really ought to be banned. The profits being made on them tells it all, but the government will turn a blind eye.

Gambling addiction is horrific due to there being no rationality to the level of financial ruin you are causing yourself in that moment. Nothing feels real, it's even worse now with online gambling. That's been my danger. If you're getting money out the ATM or keep going up to the bookie and asking for another ton adding on to a machine it snaps you out of it a bit quicker. Online though I've lost several grand in less than 20 minutes and felt like Ken Bigley'ing meself.

In terms of getting help for it, I am not a fan of anything the NHS provides in terms of therapy. I'm a fully qualified hypnotherapist and to get alternative therapy such as hypnosis, EFT and NLP via the NHS is very rare, they'll lob you down the counselling route which in my opinion is a load of old toss. If you could be prepared to spend a couple of hundred quid on EFT (the most powerful therapy there is) then it'll be the best bet you'll ever place. Your issue with gambling can be gotten to the bottom of, send me a DM and i'll try and offer you some pointers in getting started. You should never suffer alone, but you've got to really want to get to the bottom of it.

Life is worth so much more than seeing your favourite number roll in on roulette.

Yeah i'd never touch one of those con machines in a bookies, i'm a sort of person who if they choose to gamble has to have a good say in what i'm gambling on, i don't really do the lottery (maybe twice a year if it's a big one) because i find that even a bit of a stretch on the control element somehow - i only do the weekly footy acca for a few quid - and occasionally play the odd online poker tournament if i've got the time free to commit to it. I find both of these fun activities anyway as it's my well thought-out decisions on factors that play such a factor in how i bet/play poker. Done okay sticking to this over the years as well, even when i've ever been to casinos i've never done slots, roulette etc - blackjack once and left $200 up from $30 (so couldn't ask for more) just the poker. Won £1k last time i played a live poker tournament for a £50 buy-in so can't complain either.

Really stick to stuff you've got quite a bit of control of would be my advice, anything too controlled by companies is always going to favour them

Agree with Ric I've no idea how those machines haven't been banned yet. Bookies will be open Christmas Day soon I reckon solely for them.

I've had the pleasure of working at William hill and once had a lad call the police on me because he'd gambled money for his kids Christmas presents and lost.

I enjoy gambling... nags, football, online slots and roulette. Only ever use online bookies and have deposit limits in place so that I can't go chasing any losses. Also closed most accounts down bar 3 or 4. The lottery is probably the biggest con, although most punters have a couple of lines rather than lumping £100 over to the newsagent every Saturday. 3 numbers is about 100/1 now with 59 balls in the draw.

Careful - that's the 'justification lines' a gambler would use.

The biggest danger in gambling is actually the winning.

You consistently lose, you wonder what the point is and lose interest quickly - but when you win, especially decent sums, it begins to feel too easy and you can look at the outlay as an 'investment'.

Thats when the inevitable loss comes in and an instinct kicks in to chase in an attempt to get it back. In the worst cases, you will initially succeed in getting it back or worse winning more, and BANG - you're into a vicious circle!

Interesting read, makes a lot of sense but I wonder if that is still the case when post offices are open 7 days a week now

I had no idea you were a hypnotherapist Ric - you learn something new every day on here :)

I'm surprised you're a fan of EFT though. Personally I've always found that to be a load of old toss and the counselling route much more effective (but that was for depression rather than gambling addiction)

Each to their own I guess!

But the main thing is seeking help like you say. I know I could quite easily become addicted to gambling if I gave myself the opportunity. I've lost so much over the years that I've learnt I'll never beat the system, so just have a few quid on sport now and again for fun.

I know a couple of professional gamblers who make serious money out of it, but they 'work' 24/7 on it. I'm always staggered at the science they employ and how many systems and processes they have in place. They're clever guys - and I'm not clever enough...

Agree. I haven't played lottery since I was 17. Back then there were only 49 balls and it was only £1 a go.

I watched a gambling programme once - apparently they're allowed upto 4 in one shop and that's why we end up with some many around town. Instead of 8 in 1 shop they can do 4 in 1 and then up the road 4 in another.

I used to go a bit on those machines but not anymore. Computer ain't it, surely it knows what to do.

I bet for fun, it keeps me interested on a given weekend in the sports. I started betting beyond my normal token £5-10 a couple of years back and as much I really enjoyed the big wins, I found the losses really hard to take. Unless it's the Cheltenham festival, I stick to my modest limits now, as I've seen the darker side to gambling.

So this is going to come across as a huge sell! But **** it why not.

Over the last 15 months I've averaged £1000 a month profit from matched betting. I do it 1-2hours a day, alongside working full time, having a family etc.

over the past few months I've set up a website to try and help others learn how to access this additional income like I have.  It's free to access, but there are affiliate links to online products that do cost money. There's also a Facebook group, so people can ask questions, share experiences etc.

Pitching your gambling website in a thread where people are opening up about their gambling problems / addictions lol

(this is partly tongue in cheek I do understand that matched betting isn't the same as outright gambling)
