Drinkwater to Chelsea

There's a lot of contempt in this thread and some hasty decision making in regard to getting rid... We don't have anybody to replace him that's capable of his form when he's on it. If he moved though I'd want a £30 million fee in this climate.

I could see Chelsea going for this. As has been mentioned before, Kante and Drinkwater was literally the best midfield pairing in the premiership the year we won it and that strength in depth would suit Chelsea who will have plenty of games this season.

This time last year I would have said this transfer would be suicide to us, but now I'm not so sure. As we have seen with our own eyes, since getting inured last year he's not returned as the same player. He briefly improved when Ndidi arrived and Shakespeare took over, but he declined again towards the end of the season. He is also the number one source of hoofing the ball forwards and for every time he picks out Vardy, of recent he gives it away another 9 times. It's incredibly frustrating to see! From what little I have seen, I think Ndidi and Iborra might even be a better pairing than Drinkwater / Ndidi so we may not lose out that much, especially if a high quality replacement came in.

That said, col's point about the King / Amartey partnership brings back some horrific memories. We need to make sure that never happens again!

Personally I'd love to keep him here though. Club legend for me.

27 years old

England international

Title winner

and no doubt Kante has been consulted and gave a glowing reference.

It should be a £20-£30m fee.

He was linked with Man Utd for £30m so it all helps in assessing his pedigree.

I wouldn't be against it, it might not be a bad thing getting some of the old guard out.

I still think it is a bullshit story, even though I was messaged about it on the weekend.

Even after the @sylofox post?

It may all be coming from the same shit source but with sylofox saying he heard from a Chelsea ITK on Friday and your information supposedly coming from the horse's mouth albeit about third hand maybe there is no smoke without fire?

It would be nice to hear about some in-comings as opposed to rumoured out-goings.. Is our recruitment dept. on holiday?

People can criticise Drinkwater all they like, but if we sell him, you'll then see the adverse impact it would have.

You only needed to see the games last season where Drinkwater was either knackered or injured. Our central midfield of Amartey and King was, as I said last season, the worst wed had in years. We were getting mullered.

Of course we now have James and Iborra but Drinks would still be my first choice CM.

I can only hope this is not true.

Not sure if people watched us play last season but Drinks was even better for the first few months than he was in the title winning season so no idea where they're getting this, 'he's been missing since the end of the 15/16 season'. Thing is, his form went off a cliff after that.

Problem with him, is that he's the only centre midfielder in the squad who has a clearly negative effect when he's not playing well. Now, I'm not saying if we lined up with Iborra and King that wouldn't have a negative impact on the team but they're players that when they're not on it, they don't positively affect the game. They still manage to move the ball along without making many mistakes, so there's not the same negative impact. You're not going to win things with them as a pair but you'd still be fine. Drinkwater on the other hand, causes us direct problems. He slows down the play, his passing becomes atrocious, he makes so many mistakes/bad decisions and is obsessed with trying to dictate the play. For me, CM is a position where consistency is vital and when he's not playing well, he not only makes up play worse but also gives a hand to the oppo.

Don't get me wrong though mate, when he's playing well he's excellent I just see him as the obvious player to improve on at this moment in time because we need a player similar to him at his best to compliment the steady Eddie's we have

I'm just guessing his mates were winding him up.

Drinkwater was injured for the majority of last season, that's common knowledge and probably why his form dropped.

Is it unrealistic to ask for Fabregas in return? Probably.

If this is a thing you’ll find out when the teams are named tomorrow.

interesting to say the least.... the way he’s playing at the minute I wouldn’t be too upset... but him next to Kante again and he’ll look top class and we’ll be made to feel like we regret it.

The only space that is free is that of Chalboah, can't really see them replacing a space they could use for their own youngsters to buy someone who is 27 and only had one good season in the premier league. I like DD, but realistically that's what we're talking about at Chelsea's level.

Matic is leaving though... unless you mean Bakayoko has already replaced that space?

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.

Drinkwater is a very good player. Our best player for the first half of last season, trying to hold together a midfield/defence which was an absolute mess.

He then paid through the groin strain injury to help us to safety. He's our starting CM.

Would be sad to see him go. Especially as we'd take months to find a replacement and they'd end up being a flop.

Hes been with us through all the highs and lows and on his day is a top class midfielder
