No way would that have been given if it was at the other end.

Real and Barca (+ Atletico too against us last year) have got some amount of dodgy calls in their favour the last decade

It was a pen, but soft.

Could Oliver not have shown a bit of common sense and booked Buffon, and warned him?

No, it doesn't matter about "his story" if he just booked him and he saves the pen, it swings the tie.

Unfortunately, it was a pen and it was a red, you can't do that.

100% penalty and red card. You can't shove someone over who's about to tap it in. Brilliant call by Oliver. As much as I love buffon. It's a red card. Sentiment doesn't change the rules. You can't shove the ref in the back either.

Oh obviously it's an English referee. No wonder none are going to the WC

Or the fact the selection process was about 2 years ago and we only named clattenburg who is no longer a FA ref.

But don't let that ruin a good story.

Can you honestly say any of them deserve to be there anyway? If yes, I strongly disagree.

Unbelievable specimen isn't he. Best around.

The best don't act and preen like they're the best because of whatever personal insecurities they might have.

Ah well, interesting that there are four different countries in the semis for the first time in a while.

Edit: Can see why it's a pen but can't quite get why Buffon had to walk when players get in refs faces all the time and don't.

Never said they did but the 1 official team we listed no longer exists so it's a mute point.

How are they actually selected? The article below says we put forward a few referees.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/43110905

"The final decision is taken by the FA Referees' Committee and they nominated Martin Atkinson, Stuart Attwell, Robert Madley, Michael Oliver, Craig Pawson, Anthony Taylor and Paul Tierney for 2018."

Or am I misreading this?

As much as I wanted Juve to win, defender who was was too slow and ball watching clearly impedes the attackng player.  Push in the back was unnecessary. Clear penalty and Buffon deserved to be sent off.

Your answer is in the 1st few lines.

Mark Clattenburg was the only Briton on Fifa's long list of officials, collated in summer 2016, from which it would choose the final selection for Russia.

But he left his job with the Premier League and forfeited his place.

If that was the 93rd minute and it was somebody like Ashley Williams going through the back of Vards I think we can all agree we are going mental if that isnt given.

That implies he was the only one chosen by FIFA before making the final selection, not the only one we put forward, no?

No he was the only one on our list. The ones you mentioned have been recommended for 2018s list which will if chosen will officiate 2020 international tournament. Ie the euros.

Daft system we tired to replace clattenburg but we know fifa don't like the fa. So as article states request was rejected so we get some ref from Romania or wherever instead who's biggest game is probably cska v arsenal in the Europa League.

Well for a start maradonna definitely did and he was the best of his time (of all time to alot). Regardless of what you think of Ronaldo on the pitch off it he's known as ridiculously nice guy.

Buffon had to walk because he shoved the ref in the back. Not just got in his face he put his hands on him. It's a red card.
