Drinkwater was that missing link when he was on form. No one can expect that from King or James (yet). We're set to lose against any quality team playing with three in the midfield. I would still go 4-4-2 until Iborra is fit though. It's the lesser evil. Exactly. Hence we will continue to be turned over by top 6 teans. We don't play with a creative #10 and that handicaps us, especially when Mahrez & Gray are our only creative outlets. All teams have to do is double up on the wing and they've nullified 80% of our creativity. It will take a while before Iborra gets match fit and Adrien is in a legal limbo.
Tuna Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 Silva was clearly going to be the answer there as he would add creativity and be a force moving forward. Since we royally fvcked that up, we have what we have. It's disappointing. King and James are decent squad players and you need loyal guys like that in the squad who are good off the pitch whilst not needing to play every week but they are not quite premier league level. Amartey just isn't good enough in my opinion, unconvincing but he's still just a kid. Insisting on playing a midfield 2 against teams with 3 strong midfielders doesn't really help. Really is up to Iborra to be honest, I think most of our hopes for the first few months of the season rest on his shoulders. And he's currently crocked.
Guest Chocolate Teapot Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 Ndidi not first choice for me, passing lets him down big time
whoareyaaa Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 As much as I love the guy Albrighton is so one dimensional at times and seems to be a permeant marker on the team sheet at the minute while offering very little. The same could be said for James I know he is still getting up to pace after his setback and we have played 3 tough teams so its hard to critisce but I don't see him being the answer to our problems. It's tough to judge as we all know we have played United and Arsenal away and Chelsea at home we strolled over Brighton who beat West Brom today so again tough to call and we are properly all being to rash, we have Iborra and hopefully Silva to come in but for god's sake man try somet positive instead of the same old guard. Somet like that anyway, we'l be all good come the end of the season.

cc_star Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 Why is everyone sucking up Ndidi, he's been dreadful this season... Even against Sheffield United he was dire Needs dropping, badly!

He's 20 yrs old, and like Amartey has come to the Premiership from a league very inferior. I'm actually pretty sick of what we do to our younger players. Ndidi should be introduced gradually, played in certain games and sit out others. Why does this not happen? Because we have so few midfield options of any quality. It's making it look like selling Drinkwater was criminal really. I don't like how the club is being run much at present to be honest.
fleckneymike Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 Today's N'didi passing stat 67.4% still unacceptable
Dickov22 Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 James did pretty well today I thought. Ndidi too.

Me too, but Iborra & Silva along with rotation of the others would make a hell of a difference One of my concerns is the suitability of Iheanacho, I just don't see him fitting in at all It's obvious Slimani can't play with Vardy either Key games coming up, now the unlikely results are out the way... Then, we'll see
coley1884 Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 On present form is the question could equally be, who should play in midfield with James.
matty98 Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 I think it will be Iborra and James as our starting 2, if we continue with a 2 both players have to be able to pass the ball.
Koke Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 We are obsessed with 4-4-2. We are trying to shoehorn every player we have into this goddamn formation. I'm not anti 4-4-2 but for the love of Christ can we adapt depending on the players we have available + the opposition we are facing.

nnfox Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 We have and have had a problem for a little while now. And that is that Shakey wants to play three in midfield but the defenders in the squad aren't really "3 at the back" type defenders. It means that the "third" midfielder comes from the front two (Okazaki). I find this frustrating as we have over 50m of striking talent in Slimani and Iheanacho that don't really have a chance of a regular starting place unless Vardy gets injured. Really, in order to play our best players in their best positions, we need to play 12 players on the pitch. Options should be 352 with Iborra/Ndidi/James or similar. It means that Simpson would probably have to drop out and have Maguire/Wes/Fuchs back three (not ideal). Alternatively a 433 could be employed but that means Albrighton would probably miss out and a front three play with Vardy/Iheanacho/Mahrez. Neither is ideal, but until we can come up with a system that allows our midfield to be able to play without chasing the ball around for 90 minutes, we are going to continue to lack the goal threat that we should have given the attacking options we possess.

Selling Drinkwater is criminal as you like to bang on about Col, midfield are all similar and don't create enough, remember Drinkwater created 15 chances last season, your best mate Amartey created 14 and played less games. Ndidi is talented enough to start though, was great when he first came in, didn't look out of place, few dodgy games to start this season then suddenly he gets unnecessary criticism. Today his defensive work was top notch, his passing needs work but we've never really been a passing side for many many years. But as I said earlier Ndidi and James haven't been embarrassed so far this season, they've both competed well, they haven't really been carved open and we've lost games by commendable scorelines. Iborra or having Silva would add that crucial experience, but I really don't get all this knee jerk reaction over Ndidi and James. Last season we had to watch Amartey, King and Drinkwater get embarrassed, Ndidi and James so far have looked far better as a unit.
AylestoneRaider Posted 9 September 2017 Posted 9 September 2017 1 hour ago, Col city fan said: Again...ill get pelters from the usual suspects (ie nonsense) but it's in the midfield that we are just too basic. We lack creativity, goals, assists, anything much going forward from our current crop. I've said it's not good enough at this level and maintain it. The formation means we are often outnumbered as well. 1st Today they had Kante, Fabregas and Bakayoko Vs James and Wilf; hence bringing King on.
