Yeah, I can imagine that wasn't all that pleasant.

It's like trying to breathe hot water right here at the moment - I don't think I'll ever get used to the summers here.

How long does that type of heat last?

For around three to four months. Other than rain storms that cool things a little but then bake the humidity in when the sun comes out again. Not expecting much change until mid to late September.

We get intense, dry heat (in central France) I feel my skin frying if I'm out in it for any length of time. It's not at all pleasant, but I'm pale skinned so maybe I feel it worse than some.

I can understand that when it gets into the high 30s, that's not pleasant. But as is pretty standard any kind of weather in the UK that isn't 12 degrees and overcast, and the place falls apart.

Got the train the other day and the announcer said our journey may be effected by hot weather. It was 27 degrees lol

Most days I'm outside and I'll do an hour in the mid day heat before slapping on the suncream.  I feel so healthy both in mind and body so bring it on.

Mate, seriously, slap on the sunscreen whenever you are out in the sun during the summer - particularly where you are located. UV doesn't care how healthy you may feel.

I once spent 6 weeks in Key West in July/August and you could actually taste the air it was that sticky. It does add extra challenges I'll give you that, I still enjoyed it mind. The missus on the other hand, not so much.

You must have visited Hemmingway's old house then? I've been very tempted to head down there for some time, although I'm told it's quite tacky in places and intolerable during the spring breaks. I appreciate however that the natural surroundings, wildlife and environment are fascinating. Florida holds very minimal appeal to me - not simply as a consequence of purportedly being the dumbest state in America barring Texas, there are other reasons, but I know that I need to bite the bullet and make the pilgrimage to the Cape at least once in my lifetime - and ideally timed to see a launch. I am hatching plans to visit a good friend in Miami for a week, hire a motorcycle and then head north up the coast to Cape Canaveral. Then on to the Daytona raceway before flying out of ****ing Orlando of all places - spending as little time there as possible beyond depositing the bike and an enforced begrudging wait in an airport departure lounge.

My love was the American West and from extended stays climbing, hiking and travel out there I have left few stones unturned. I love the mountains and the desert - again, a dry heat.

I like it as hot as possible, although the humidity here is tiring. Summers in DC when I worked there were killer, it was like swimming in the air it was so humid. Unbearable when you’ve got a suit on all day.

I love to rag on the trains as much as anyone, but a rail nerd explained to me a few years ago that our rail system is built to deal with cool weather (obvs) so the gaps between sleepers are reduced. When it’s hot the sleepers can’t handle it and expand to unsafe limits. In warmer countries, sleeper gaps are much wider to deal with 300 days of 30+ degrees. I may not have the details 100% accurate but basically the argument of ‘I was on a train in Death Valley mate and it was 87 degrees and now my return to Preston is cancelled and it’s barely sunny this country’s a joke’ isn’t fair

You should have stripped to your speedos then.

I have to travel to the University of Nottingham early this week. I'll be ****ed if it's going to be via rail in 30 degree heat. Taking the bike.

Wow that is a long stint. Tbh not sure I'd fancy that either. I'd probably have to invest in an ice machine and one of them immersion barrels

I went to Ecuador in 2016 for 4 weeks, manually mixing concrete up a mountain in 30°+ heat and 100% humidity was the sweatiest I’ll ever be.

I can deal with heat if I'm just out and about having a bev or something but I'd never exercise outdoors in this, keen cyclist but anything over 20-22 and I'm not bothering.

Also always been a layers man with clothes, you can't wear an overshirt in this ffs

Yes I've done Hemmingways's house but shamefully I've not read any of his work so it didn't do a great deal for me. My other half took more of an interest.

There's not a great deal to do in Key West to be honest, but I find it great place to do absolutely nothing. Sometimes I just need to completely disengage from things and there's something  about the place that does it for me. Half of Duval Street is indeed tacky, A bit like Bourbon Street in New Orleans. The other half I find quite charming, lovely little bars and shops and I love the Colonial architecture of the place. We always get accommodation away from Duval, South Street a few blocks away is more local and has a really laid back feel. The sunset's are out of this world.

I wouldn't say that I'm a mad Florida fan either,  I've never done Orlando, Miami etc. Although I've done a few Gulf coast towns and also a few along the Atlantic coast and they're all very pleasant. You should definitely do your trip though as I'm sure you'll have a great time.

As for the sunscreen though, I thought that a bit a exposed sun was good, or am making that up? I thought that avoiding getting burnt was the key and I never get to that point.

Yup humid weather is awful ain't it. I love hot dry weather. At night where i live it gets down to around 20 degrees from the Highs of 35-40 and its enjoyable. There's always a nice breeze as well

This. Not sure why so many people cry about a few weeks of warm (not hot, it's not hot) weather in the UK. It'll be grey and raining again before you know it.

I mean 30 degrees is hot. You've got to be some sort of contrary edgelord to pretend it isn't.

Lower 20s I'm all down for but when it starts to get up to 28, 29, 30 and above we're just not built for it in this country.

And I don't mean us as people, I mean our homes, our infrastructure, we're literally not built for it. We don't have aircon, we don't have pools, our houses are built with good insulation designed to keep heat in, not help it dissipate.

Hence why it gets to the evening and its a pleasant 19/20 odd outside with a light breeze yet everyone's bedroom is still like a 40 degree hot box. Yes people could learn to mitigate better, keep the windows closed, have light curtains and blinds to reflect the light, etc. But it's still uncomfortably warm regardless.

Yes. I suppose they are increasing their fan base (get off our turf) but should register nothing more than a footnote here but it will no doubt be reported as if it was a cup final

Man United v Liverpool is the most overrated “derby” there is.

Real rivalries can’t be played in a pre-season friendly.

For all the titles they have between them, they hardly ever compete for the title in the same season.

Man City and Liverpool, on the pitch, has been far more relevant.

unpopular opinion, bottles of beers are nicer than pints sometimes 👀

It’s a good shout this, but as Cardiff has mentioned, cans also. I will rarely drink Bud, but if I do, it’s always from a really chilled can, and that does a job at a BBQ or whatever. Bottles of Bud don’t do it for me and neither do pints. Stella is just the GOAT in any form it always delivers, but San Miguel in a really cold bottle is the best way to drink that - again, doesn’t work on draft for me.

Any of the German beers you can get here are to be drank in bottles only too.

I realised this over lockdown. A lot of the bottled beers from smaller brewers are nicer than cask ale, which I guess reflects more on the pubs that keep it rather than the brewers themselves.
