Will1981 Posted 26 October 2017 Posted 26 October 2017 How well will our players fit into Puel's prefered Diamond formation? Schmeichel Simpson --- Morgan --- Maguire --- Chilwell Iborra Ndidi -------- King Mahrez Slimani --- Vardy Playing this narrow formation we will probably struggle to fit more than one of our wingers in the team at any one time but Mahrez may be given a little more freedom and less defensive responsibilities and we will be able to play with two out and out strikers.
AKCJ Posted 26 October 2017 Posted 26 October 2017 Is this actually the formation they played last season? From what I've seen it was more the 4-2-3-1, similar to ours.
Ashley Posted 26 October 2017 Posted 26 October 2017 We played more of a diamond Saturday? Iborra stayed back with Morgan and Maguire. Simpson and Fuchs were even getting forward... Ndidi was up top with Okazaki and Vardy.. Mahrez kept drifting inside.
ZeGuy Posted 26 October 2017 Posted 26 October 2017 Can't see him going with that formation until january. You need attacking FBs and Silva (not King). Fuchs isn't really one, Simpson even less. Unless he puts Albrighton as RB and Chilly becomes a starter. Even then, it still doesn't solve the midfield problem. I'm fairly certain that Gray and Chillwell will have more game time and he's likely to get the best out of Mahrez. Can see Morgan, Fuchs and Albrighton as his first victims.
daddylonglegs Posted 26 October 2017 Posted 26 October 2017 just as long as its not the diamond Pearson played at Southampton when we lost 2-0. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think it was James, Drinkwater, King and Hammond in a 4. Genuinely one of the least creative Leicester sides ive ever seen.

Ranieri's diamond away at Southampton was far, far, far worse.
SheppyFox Posted 26 October 2017 Posted 26 October 2017 Silva in for king January onwards, It’ll be good!

Attacking fullbacks with crossing ability are an absolute necessity for the diamond to work. Cedric and Bertrand offer a bit more in that department than Danny and Fuchs.
Phube Posted 26 October 2017 Posted 26 October 2017 Maybe after Tuesday night's revelatory performance (against Leeds reserves) from Amartey, he could be our flying fullback?

yorkie1999 Posted 26 October 2017 Posted 26 October 2017 Step forward albrighton (who said he does like to play as a wing back) and chillwell

polarbear Posted 26 October 2017 Posted 26 October 2017 this is a potential option until silva is available: kasper albrighton Maguire dragovic chilwll iborra amartey ndidi mahrez/gray slimani/vardy iheanacho/okazaki
MC Prussian Posted 26 October 2017 Posted 26 October 2017 Not a fan of the narrow 4-1-2-1-2 myself. True diamond formation to me would be: ——————Schmeichel—————- Simpson - Morgan - Maguire - Fuchs ——————- Iborra——————— Mahrez ————————Albrighton ———————Silva——————— ——-Vardy ————— Slimani—— Very suited for counter-attacking football.
AjcW Posted 26 October 2017 Posted 26 October 2017 He's made it plainly clear at every job he's taken that he does not prefer one set formation. He looks at the players and moulds a formation that suits them best. With that in mind I can see a 4-2-3-1 with Two sitting DM's Iborra holding back and N'didi getting forwards with Gray and Mahrez on the wings and Nacho and Okazaki off Slimani or Vardy.

I don't think you can leave shinji out if the squad he offers more upfront, he will chase every ball, very underrated in my opinion
Callabinho Posted 26 October 2017 Posted 26 October 2017 What about Mendy? Hasn’t Puel managed him before?

You could substitute Slimani for Okazaki, playing behind Vardy, or replace Iborra by Ndidi or Albrighton by Gray, for instance.
Koke Posted 26 October 2017 Posted 26 October 2017 We can't play a diamond with Simpson. Diamond requires the full backs to attack.
Fox Ulike Posted 26 October 2017 Posted 26 October 2017 Can't see how Vardy will fit into a diamond. Or Gray. Both are too direct. Both full-backs will need replacing. Albrighton's main strength is crossing, so i'm guessing he's out too. I don't think N'didi has the technique for Puel's style of football. I'm just hoping that Puel has the common-sense to realise that he can't just instantly replace half a side. He'll need to keep the formation and tactics for the remainder of the season. If we survive, then maybe next year we can build a new team according to Puel's philosophy. I think this will be Vardy's last season for the club.
