Albrighton's main strength is crossing, so i'm guessing he's out too. I don't think N'didi has the technique for Puel's style of football. I'm just hoping that Puel has the common-sense to realise that he can't just instantly replace half a side. He'll need to keep the formation and tactics for the remainder of the season. If we survive, then maybe next year we can build a new team according to Puel's philosophy. I think this will be Vardy's last season for the club. Why can't Vardy play in a Puel system? Shane Long is very direct and Charlie Austin offers nothing outside the box and Puel had them both at Southampton. I think Vardy is technically better than he gets credit for. Not amazing but decent.

Well I think you've answered your own question there. In a 4411 counter-attacking side he's amazing. In a diamond he's probably "decent". Why would he want to stay and be just a 'decent' player in a formation that doesn't play to his strengths?
Lovejoy Posted 26 October 2017 Posted 26 October 2017 Talk of the diamond and Puel brings back some sore memories. That cold morning in Southampton last January when we played Okazaki at the top, Mendy on the left and Gray up top. Sadly not one I'll forget in a hurry.

UpTheLeagueFox Posted 26 October 2017 Posted 26 October 2017 He's unlikely to change the formation straight away, that would be suicidal

richardsfoxes Posted 26 October 2017 Posted 26 October 2017 I assume he was watching on Tuesday, i wonder if we will bring Daniel and Chilwell into the first team i actually quite like the look of the diamond. Hardest decision for him is who to play upfront.

Schmeichel Simpson --- Morgan --- Maguire --- Chilwell Iborra Ndidi -------- King Mahrez Slimani --- Vardy Playing this narrow formation we will probably struggle to fit more than one of our wingers in the team at any one time but Mahrez may be given a little more freedom and less defensive responsibilities and we will be able to play with two out and out strikers. We dont have the staff for this. King is a great servant. .. but not a pl starter. We never seem to acquire the players to allow the manager the flexibility to adopt different formations. Hence "vardyball" is our only option

I wouldn't underestimate the difficulty of switching a formation that has remaining fairly static for three years. It's not like changing your shoes. Look at the team we had back in 2014: Schmeical De Laet, Morgan, Moore, Konchesky Knockaert, Drinky, James, Dyer Nugent Vardy The formation really hasn't changed in 3 years, and this means we've been able to evolve the personnel. We won the Championship, the Great Escape, The Premiership and the CL quarter finals playing like this. I don't really understand why we're moving away from a 4411. It's like Brexit all over again.

dedlock Posted 26 October 2017 Posted 26 October 2017 Give the guy time. I am sure he will assess the squad over the coming weeks. He is bound to tweak how we play, particularly defensively. By January he will, hopefully, have a clear idea of how he wishes us to play going forward. We will also have Silva available. Come the new year we will have a clearer idea of Puel’s tactical awareness. The doomsayers can have their rant then if we have not moved up the table or the football is considered to be boring.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 26 October 2017 Posted 26 October 2017 Slimani without wingers? I don't think so.

That's right, but in a 4-4-2 diamond, which is what the thread is about, the fullbacks become wingers as well, hence the term wing-back.

We were playing 352 in the great escape weren't we? As far as I can remember 442 didn't feature much under Pearson in the prem. It has been a successful system for us over the last few years though.
