Let off for using coke because he lost a child in tragic circumstances; let off jumping into the crowd on similar grounds.

Right or wrong?

Posted (edited)

Right.

Players are expected to just take in every word of abuse and not have any platform to give some back on. They can't give fans stick in the ground or on social media. I'm glad there's an exception, using a bit of common sense. Any punishment would've almost counted as a victory for the low-life West ham fan making the comment.

if someone made an insult my way about my dead baby son I'd be straight in there looking to find the fvcker and knock him out. Inexcusable what the fan has allegedly said.

And the coke use?

He wasn't let off for taking coke, he received a lengthy ban for that.

As for the crowd incident, if what was alleged was said, his reaction was understandable.

If he'd have got to the idiot and smacked him about, he'd be done for it no question.

I don't really want to think about what sort of mental state I'd be in I had a baby son that died.

It's pretty understandable that something that horrendous would put you into a deep, dark hole.

Right. There would be no issue with the second incident if nothing was said. It is clear provocation and the person who said it should be ashamed to try to score cheap points by mocking a tragedy.

BBC Sport:

'Livermore tested positive for cocaine while at Hull City in May 2015, almost a year after his son's death .The FA decided not to ban him because of "the unique nature of circumstances" involved.'

He got caught in May and was suspended until September by Hull. It was at a hearing in September where the FA decided not to ban him due to the circumstances and therefore Hull also kept him on their books. So really he missed all of preseason and a little bit of the season.

Being suspended by his club isn't the same as banning him, is it?

Regardless my question referred to the FA's reaction, which was not to ban him.

I can't have been the only person who saw this in "Recent Topics" and immediately thought we were trying to sign him before reading the thread lol.

His former club dealt with him (not coke; I mean, punished him) & he was put through the correct disciplinary procedures; the FA correctly decided against punishing a grieving father any further for using a banned substance to cope with the loss of his child.

As for the "Fan" the other night - Derby gave a lifetime ban to the "fan" who abused Billy Sharp on Twitter. West Ham should do the same but the "fan" should also be referred to the police for his behaviour.

I don't think Livermore has put a single foot wrong, except for perhaps his method of coping with grief. But to be honest, that's nobodies fvcking business.

You seem to think the FA made the wrong decision not to ban him.

Whatever makes you infer that?

All I've done is present the facts in order to provoke discussion.

Yes and no.

It's just a sad indictment of how far fans will go nowadays in order to insult an opposing player. It was a pretty stupendous and brainless thing to say.

On the other hand, do footballers have to react so viciously as retribution?

I think he'd have gained much more applause if he had simply walked away, shrugging it off.

Then again, I don't know what it feels to lose an own child and what dark alleys it can lead to.

You just wonder what makes a person have a thought process which goes:

"I know, I'll mock that bloke's dead child. That will be a good idea, it will show everyone what a wit I have and in no way will it end badly for him or me."

People can think some weird stuff, eh?

No footballers don't have to react to things viciously. Watching the Man Utd game the other day and Pogba started grabbing an opponent after he had fouled Pogba's best mate Lingard, even though the ref was already on the scene dealing with. He wouldn't let him go. Wasn't even a bad foul, it was pretty obvious pogba was pissed because his mate got a kick. You see it all the time, even in the heat of a game, they should react the way they do at times. But in this case, you're talking about somebody mocking you for one of the most tragic things that can ever happen to a person, I'm sure in many ways Livermore, Arter and Sharp will never be the same people they were before as losing a child is such a life affecting moment. I think almost everyone would struggle the "shrug" it off, and even though you don't, like I don't,  have a child I'm astounded you can't empathise with that.

Many things could and should be ignored. If I was earning what these guys earn you could shout pretty much anything at me from the stands or on the pitch. Call me a willy puller, a ****, mock my hair cut, my fashion sense, mock my choice in women, I don't care, but mocking death, especially that of child is way over the line.
