THe Earl Shilton by pass was held up for ages due to newts.

Newts halt work on village bypass

Work on a long-awaited bypass in Leicestershire has been held up because a protected species of newt has been found in the construction area.

Work started in September on the Earl Shilton bypass - planned for more than 20 years - and is set to cost £15m.

But a colony of great crested newts has been found and their protected status means it is illegal to disturb them.

When temperatures rise, the newts will come out of hibernation and move to a pond, allowing work to continue.

'Horror stories'

The county council's director of highways, Matthew Lugg, said he was hopeful the lost time could be made up.

Mr Lugg said: "It is very difficult to detect these species and no matter how much you do to detect these creatures, it's not necessarily going to be comprehensive.

"We are hopeful though that we can make up the time and get back on track. There have been some real horror stories in other parts of the country and our situation could have been much worse."

Newts which caused a three-month delay and extra costs of £1m to a bypass in Leicestershire have failed to appear.

It had been thought a colony of the protected great crested newt was threatened by construction of the road around Earl Shilton.

Under European law, the county council had to install protection fences and traps, halting the project.

But after a month of searching not a single newt has been found, prompting officials to question the move.

It is against the law to injure, capture or disturb the amphibians in any way without a licence.

About 8 new documents up. Mostly more objections from locals. They’re not happy at all!

Whilst some of the complaints may have some credibility, the wording of lots of those letters smacks of classic NIMBYism.

There's also concerns from a local company that uses haulage for business requirements that any development could affect their future and also the village's image.

More NIMBYs uploaded; essentially they’re now sending in the exact same letter. Judging by some of the signatures some have even got their kids involved ?

Just bulldoze all of their houses and build it....football is here now and there's nothing you can do to stop it!

About 20 more documents uploaded. Pretty much all NIMBYs.

This is thread is referenced in one of the letters too - shouldn’t have blabbed about the helicopters!!

Some of them really are pathetic, just a brief summary for people who don’t want to read them all

complaints about helicopters,

against human rights,

crowds that will apparently gather outside the training ground,

we are called leicester city but want to build in the county,

more complaints about the road, one person even decided that although they say it’s a dangerous junction they got out of their car to take a picture of the junction,

another saying they want compensation of £8-10 million to be spent on Seagrave,

complaints about why do we need it so big when a much better club like Manchester City built theirs much smaller

Just for those complaints alone, think the club ought to double to the size of the project :P

How many members did the golf club  have using it 7 days a week. A lot of the objections are based on greed and snobbery but like with everything some will have a form of merit and should be addressed.

Everyone hates nimbys until they want to build something in our back yard. These people have a right to object, doesn't mean they'll be able to stop it. I'm sure the club took advice before they bought the land.

In terms of revenue for the borough council it will be massive cash injection and will be built.

Some of these are brilliant! Surely the amount of people coming to the training ground will add trade to local businesses: your cafés, pubs. Same with local petrol stations etc?
