I've seen some pretty tragic cases.

I used to fix things and interpret a bit on the side for Brits retiring to Bulgaria. Most people are sound obviously but there does seem to be a strain of utterly cvnty expats with their special get-togethers that ironically like living abroad because "there are fewer immigrants" (no joke). And Brits get their arses kissed in a lot of places, the further east you go the worse it gets and they get disgustingly spoiled. And the majority have far far better lives than the locals. It got depressing after a while.

Lived abroad from age 22-32 (this year). Mostly in Italy (Trento and Palermo) and Balkans (based in Sofia but spent a lot of time in Istanbul and Thessaloniki). Did a variety of things, none of which paid very well, mostly taught and took photos for magazines and occasional exhibitions. Enjoyed it but felt like a bit of a false lifestyle and felt like I needed a bit of security. 

Moved back to UK now and teach and teacher-train in Cambridge and London.
