Southampton are pathetic.

They'd probably jump to have Puel back at this moment in time.

Their defending today was so comical and haphazard it made our defense look like it could withstand nuclear holocaust.

I remember how many of us (not all, in fairness) of people criticised them for being glad to get rid of Puel.

He finished in 8th with them - how could that be a bad season?  So I suppose it's ironic that we're in 8th, yet have been playing poor football, with poor results, for a while now. Admittedly, we haven't had a cup final (yet!), but If the season finished now, would anyone feel like it had been a successful season, even if the league position suggested otherwise?

I'm not suggesting we sack him, but would anyone be particularly gutted if he went? I can't say I'd overly upset. I think my reaction would be "meh", which pretty much sums up the football, the results, and the manager this season.

What has gone so wrong at Southampton? They used to be a really decent side. Never quite good enough to topple the top clubs, but often one of the best of the rest.

How have they turned this bad? They looked embarrassing in those highlights earlier.

Theres only so many times you can lose the calibre of player they have done, and find an adequate cheap replacement, or keep dipping into their youth system that happened to have a golden crop of players.

Its one thing selling Van Dijk for 75 million.....so you had a nominal 75 million defender. But you cant replace like for like, you cant then use the money to buy a 75 million defender. They arent available for you to buy. And they wont be allowed to leave to join you. Its difficult to bring in quality.

Couple that with a fan base who expects they should be better than they have a right to be, then youve got a recipe for disaster. It wouldnt be a shock if they went down, as theyre lacking in all areas of the pitch really.

I sympathise that Koeman and Pochettino jumped ship on them though

They sacked a decent manager!

I think Southampton fans would give anything to have Puel back!

The berk they have in charge now is at real risk of relegating them. Which would be such a shame. They are a good club with some good players.

Oh goody, the knee jerk seesaw swings the other way, you know what the say a change is as good as a rest.

agree with this a bit too, especially when you consider that despite 1 win since the dawn of time, even southampton won at west brom. if we put a few wins together and get into europe then we can party.

Goals. They never replaced the goals they lost in Mane and Pelle.

Thats is the huge task we have this summer when Mahrez goes

In recent seasons Southampton have sold:

Van Dijk

Mane

Pelle

Clyne

Lovren

Lallana

Shaw

Alderweireld (technically on loan but I believe they purchased him to sell to Spurs)

They’ve also lost or let go of Pochetino, Koeman and Puel.

Their board have made a ton of money from the club but cut corners in improving the team and it’s catching up with them. That’s why I feel grateful for our owners who want to build on what we have and not just cash out.

However, Southampton’s plight is something we must be wary of. We lost one of the Crown Jewels in Kante. If we lose Mahrez we’ll likely get worse as replacing him will be nigh on impossible.

You’re missing a few from that list, Wanyama, Schneiderlin, Chambers and Jay Rodriguez.

It was never sustainable to sell all those players and I’m amazed it has taken this long for it to catch up with them.

That is an entire team barring a keeper, imagine if they had kept all them together!

Eurgh, no, not really. Ok, my choice of title was incredibly ill judged (as it didn't reflect the point I was trying to make), but I'm tired of people with the reading comprehension level of a mollusc mis-representing my views. So let's clear a few things up.

I never once said Southampton are having a good season. Nor did I say that they'd much rather be in our situation, because clearly they're in a incredibly shit position. How Southampton are faring at the moment isn't particularly relevant to the point I was making, however. I also don't hate Puel, want him sacked, etc. - I actually like that he's trying to transition us to a passing style, even if it's not quite there yet. The only point I was making (which wasn't "herp derp you fink dey soufampton r doin gud llolz") is that actually many of the points that Southampton fans were making about Puel at the start of his tenure seemed to be coming to fruition.

The Southampton fans view was that even though they finished in 8th, the football had become boring towards the end, with many poor results and a severe lack of goals at home. Not only that, but the 8th position flattered to deceive a little; while it's undoubtedly a strong finishing position, the gap between 8th and the relegation zone was so tight that just a couple of poor results would make a team drop down the table significantly. So while as Leicester fans, many of us were saying Why on earth would you sack a manager who finished in 8th - because on the surface it appeared to be a crazy decision - for a lot of Saints fans it was clearly the right decision, in the same way that us letting Ranieri go was the correct decision. Now they obviously didn't appoint a good manager as a replacement. Massive error there, but that doesn't mean that the choice to get rid was necessarily the wrong one.

So on to us; while Leicester fans derided the Saints point of view ("Boring and defensive? We scored 4 goals vs Saints, the idiots") a lot of what they said has certainly rung true over the past 10 games or so. The football changed from exciting to bland, almost clueless passing for the sake of passing. Transition from defence to attack was laborious, goals dried up, and teams only needed score one goal and then shut up shop. Results were poor against teams that we should certainly be getting results against. It was only a few moments of individual brilliance that gained us a few points. It certainly seemed that a lot of their criticisms about Puel's style/management seemed to be ringing true here as well, and I thought it was odd to see the similarities between Leicester 2018 and Saints 2017, which was the point I was trying to make.

Now, obviously we had a great win today (and people are out in force saying  "I told you so" - funny how one game suddenly means that the 10 preceding it mean nothing). But while that's a positive result, one win against the team miles adrift at the bottom of the table (who capitulated once we got the second goal) doesn't prove anything yet. If we can keep that up though, then brilliant.

Nice try, but I think you just have to accept...it was a daft thread.

Southampton could well get relegated under this chump. They wouldn’t be where they are if still under Puel.

Damn I missed another 4 players who went for over 50m combined! Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain and Gareth Bale are all former Saints players too!

I genuinely feel sorry for the fans. Greed has prevented them from progressing up the table and as you say, now it’s catching up with them.

The thread makes a good point and those who say otherwise have very short term memories.

There are some worrying similarities between us and Saints last year. A difference is that as yet we haven't sacked Puel and if he is given more time and money than he had there, the outcome may be different.
