Agreed, our first choice centre halves will be Maguire and the new signing (probably Evans).

Morgan will probably be third choice and possibly fourth choice will be Benalouane or one of the academy lads. People can forget about signing Mawson or Gibson to come here as a bench player. If we sign another centre half I'd expect him to be a young player with potential.

I believe that Puel would like to be able to play three CBs & 2 wingbacks. We need a minimum of two more CBs

I really don’t

its been an abvious option for us this season with chillers and albrighton far better wing backs than they are full backs and an unhappy CB sitting on the bench. Yet he did it only once when we lost amartey injured Home to bmouth and the players looked lost in the system until we fell behind and the opposition dropped back to protect what they had . He didn’t do it again afair Unless we were desperately chasing the game.

People are obsessed about three at the back on here.

it can work with the right personnel and a manager who really believes in it.  With chillers, Ricardo and Maguire in the side we are making progress but I don’t think puel is a fan (as Claudio wasn’t).

Perfect back up to Evans and Maguire.

Think it would be hard to convince him to come as back-up, but these are the caliber of players we really should have as 3rd choice if we want to progress.

Gibson is not coming here to be back up. Non-story

And nor will we be paying £20m+ for a back up centre half (Dragovic fan boys take note).

Just smacks of throwing a host of midtable clubs in the story to pad it out. Evans will be the only centre back incoming.

Only if Benalouane stays for one more year.

Maguire, Evans and Morgan alone won't carry us through an entire Premier League and FA Cup/League Cup season.

Of course we should be planning for the possibility that we could receive an offer for maguire that is too good to turn down if he has a spunking World Cup ....

I doubt that means we are currently chasing Gibson though

Well we'd still have Amartey, Hughes, Knight and the lad on loan at Pearson's Belgium club whose name escapes me. At least one of those will be on Benalouane's level I would have thought.

Elliott Moore?

I'm all for giving youngsters a chance, especially the ones from your own academy.

Amartey I don't see as a proper centre-back, although he's played there occasionally.

Let's see what Puel has in mind with the first few pre-season games over with. Hughes and Thomas made the bench a few times last season, but that was rather out of desperation due to our injury crisis/absentees, and nothing tangible came out of it in terms of match practice on the highest level...

I like the comments about so and so will not be coming here to play back up?

We might be changing formation?

Well, let's hope Puel thinks the same way and the youngsters can give a positive account of themselves. :fc:

There were plenty of opportunities last season, but Puel didn't go for it...

With Ashley on this.

Who isn't to say we are returning to the O'Neill method of having 5 in defence.

Pereira - Maguire - Evans - Gibson - Chilwell

Hey I hear ya, but Ben Gibson won't be cheap, and I'd expect solid wages for him to entice him to us if that's the case, which would then suggest that he'd need to be playing regularly. He plays as left sided CB. You figure we're going to play with 3 CBs 2 defensive wingers then the majority of the season?

5-2-3? You never know.

Personally I think Mahrez stays but we shall see.

Means we have given up on Dragovic if this happens, shame really as I thought he was a great defender but obviously Puel didn’t...

I could see us being difficult to be broken down with that formation, but the PULLOUTS will be smacking their lips and picking back up their pitchforks.

I can see us utilising this formation, but not the bulk of the season. which means benching someone. Suppose it'll be dependant on who we bring in when Mahrez goes. I sadly don't think he'll staying.
