Still got that problem a year down the line, it's happening in a few other areas too. We do have two academy prospects who might make it in Luke Thomas and Calvin Ughelumba but a gamble to have as sole back up right now. Maybe that's why we are being linked with right backs as Ricardo could easily play left back if needs be.

Winger, back up Striker and Tielemans is going to cost a fortune.

I agree and i'd definitely keep him around if we can, the poor sod just wants to go and see his wife and kids though. 50 bags a week aside...
st albans fox Posted 8 May 2019 Posted 8 May 2019 Judging by his goal of the season tweet, he will be here !!!!!!! considering he wanted to leave last summer (his words btw after the Swansea game where we drew 1-1), the fact he is willing to stick around another season, away from his family shows that the atmosphere around the squad must be very good.
rachhere Posted 8 May 2019 Posted 8 May 2019 So pleased he is staying. His wife is so patient though. If I were her i would have throttled him if he suggested staying away another year! They should have come up with a new category last year to give him a prize for this moment: Edit. Not last year, 2017, how was it that long ago?!
lgfualol Posted 8 May 2019 Posted 8 May 2019 Makes sense really for him to stay. I'd prefer younger legs, but we wont be able to sign anyone else who is happy to sit on the bench like Fuchs.
MC Prussian Posted 8 May 2019 Posted 8 May 2019 Logical step would've been to head to the States and end his career in the MLS this summer. If he's happy to stick around for another year, fine by me. He's also versatile enough to be deployed as a centre-back if need be. But we really need shopping for a decent younger backup at left-back sooner than later. Maybe Callum Elder can be convinced to take over that role this summer?

Not sure Callum Elder is good enough, he has only ever played 15 games at Championship level, only managed 4 games in a struggling Ipswich side 24 years old, probably time to cut our losses with him

He's got a long time after football to do the family bit (easy to say of course)

Solid backup option if you ask me.
Ric Flair Posted 8 May 2019 Posted 8 May 2019 Probably get to spend a lot more time out there and then just come over here when we need him, free lance left back.

In league one.The step up is massive and he needs to do something in the championship before he's considered of sufficient quality to take a risk on using as first choice backup.

filbertway Posted 8 May 2019 Posted 8 May 2019 Elder is going to be a league two or one player. Shouldn't be anywhere near consideration for us. In fact, it wouldn't shock me if he ended up in the A League. Chillwell's still a young lad so do we get in an old experienced head happy to come in as cover, or do we sign a younger lad develop under him?

Luke Thomas is a highly rated 18 year old left back who's captained the England team who's been put into the academy over a 19 year old well performing youngster. I suspect we'll try to develop Luke Thomas over the next two years. In the meantime the 19 year old Ughelumba may well get a sniff but with Fuchs on the bench I'm not sure how.

Ahh yeah, I've read about Thomas and Ughelumba. Could be that we keep Fuchs for another season and see how both of them are developing then. If we've got players capable of stepping up from the academy then it's definitely worth seeing if they can make the grade.
Tuna Posted 8 May 2019 Posted 8 May 2019 Sensible decision to keep him for another year, he's got priceless experience and will be happy with the odd cup appearance whilst providing back up for Chilwell. Saves us spending money and wages on an expensive backup player that won't feature much.

Just read up on Luke Thomas. 17 years old and already played against Rochdale in the Checkatrade. Maybe another year of Fuchs and Thomas could be ready to step up to be Chilwell's understudy? It's always great if we can pad out the squad with academy graduates rather than buying them in for good money. https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/who-luke-thomas-lowdown-leicester-2202461

He won't be getting that at the New York Red Bulls. he probably won't even get half of that.
