How about Neville Neville. what on earth possessed Gary's grandparents?

Funnily enough I'm just reading Gary's book and his story is that his Grandma's mother in law was laughing at the midwife thinking the baby's first name was Neville and how ridiculous a name Neville Neville would be and it could never be called that - his grandma was so stubborn she used the name anyway.

I got married 3 weeks ago, my wife has a 16 year old son and wanted us all to have the same name. I took her name because I didn't think it was right him having to change name because we decided to get married (plus my surname was Shirley so I couldn't put him through the same abuse I got at school ?). The amount of shit I have got from aunts and uncles for "dropping" my name is unreal.

There was a great piece on Radio 2 before Christmas about double barreled surnames, mainly where women didn't want to give up their surname and a couple phoned in who were called "White" and "Christmas" so just made it a double barreled surname lol

My fiancé is taking my surname and I think I’d be really offended/annoyed if she didn’t. Call me a misogynist by all means but it does matter to me a lot. Thankfully she does want my surname.

My wife insisted on the same when we got married 20 years ago - her maiden name first (hyphen) my surname. I kept my surname as is and let her do what she wanted, but the deal was that if we had kids (especially a boy) then the kids would have my surname (to keep my family name going) as the wife's brothers both have sons to keep their family name going

Lo and behold she twists my arm when our both kids are born so they're also double barreled but because it's such a gob full, they've all conveniently dropped my part over the years and now pretty much just use the wife's maiden name as their surname.

The horrible fvckers.

Is your surname something like Savile or Trump?

I met a bloke on holiday who’s surname was Reid-Wright, he couldn’t see why I found it amusing.

I wouldn't have been able to deal with that mate. Respect to you.

My kids surname were never up for debate. Mine or probable divorce.

I'm an Asian guy and its customary that the bride crys at the end of the wedding, together with her family. I tell you what, it should have been me crying.

Did you suggest writing it down to help him understand.......assuming he wasn't illiterate?

If Ian Wright had married a daughter of former England teammate Mark Wright and their child had married a descendant of the Wright Brothers, who flew the first aeroplane....

Ian and Mark might have shared a grandson named Ian Wright-Wright-Wright (or indeed Mark Wright-Wright-Wright).

Sorry, getting giddy again....

When my daughter married her partner, they combined their surnames (first part of hers, 2nd part of partners)  to create an entirely new name... i loved it, of course the divorce means it will change back lol

This is an interesting one, where you could have say Tony Jones marries Sally Smith and they create the Smones family. They then have two children Gary and Barry.

After the divorce the family had Tony Jones, Sally Smith and Garry and Barry Smones.
So the kids end up with no connection to either parent in their name.

In my daughters case, the child has, and will carry the combined name, which will do as you say and not be connected by surname to her preceeding family. (how fortunate is my family that my brother was able to pump out a true heir to the family name and keep it alive for the future :) )

It begs the question as to how "valuable" our names are... the carrying on of the family name seems somewhat historic and outdated, and perhaps no longer relevant in modern society, having said that I find it slightly weird how many people are obsessed by the "family name".

I also wonder how modern people deal with the concept of it "dying" with them if they are unfortunate enough to only manage to produce a second rate female, unworthy of carrying it on lol

How does your grandchild feel about the name situation? Are they old enough to know and understand?
It’s an interesting point about names and carrying them on, I am the only person to carry on my family name, although I have taken the name to the other side of the world - maybe killing it off in England.
I have boys now, but don’t think I would be too bothered about them taking their partners names when they eventually are old enough to marry and have their own family. I think I’d actually prefer they took the partners names than have a double barrelled name.
