England set to face Switzerland at King Power Stadium September 11th

England will face Switzerland at the King Power Stadium on September 11, as the FA look to take more games on the road.

The decision to play the Three Lions' final World Cup warm-up match against Costa Rica away from Wembley received widespread support, and looks to have started a trend. 

The 2-0 victory at Elland Road was noted for the improved atmosphere, compared to recent games at the national stadium. 

 

And it appears that success has fueled a desire to take home games around the country in a bid to bring the national team to a wider audience. 

 

Wembley is the subject of a bid by Fulham owner Shahid Khan, and it is thought England could be forced to play more of their fixtures away from their London base should a deal go through. 

However, that is not necessarily a problem for the Three Lions, and Gareth Southgate has given his backing to playing more games on the road. 

This will be the second time England have played at the King Power, having previously beaten Serbia and Montenegro there in a friendly back in 2003.

 

The decision comes off the back of the success of playing at Elland Road against Costa Rica

It has also played host to two Jamaican internationals, against Brazil in 2003 and Ghana in 2006. 

England have been known to take games on the road in the past, playing at The Etihad Stadium and the Stadium of Light in the build-up to Euro 2016.

While the FA are happy for friendlies to be played away from Wembley, however, it is yet to be seen if any competitive fixtures will follow suit. 

England's first game after the World Cup will be against Spain on September 8, as part of the UEFA's new  Nations League competition, but that will be played in London.

The commentator on England's match said there was going to be a match September in the midlands. I wondered then if it's be here.

Happy with this. Shame that the atmosphere will be nothing like that at Elland Road though

I went to the game at Elland Road and the atmosphere was fantastic. I'm all for England games being taken around the country as it allows kids and others who can't get to Wembley (especially on a weekday night) to watch their national side, so this is a great idea, great to have a fixture at the KP of course too!

It's been speculated in England fan groups that it was Leicester or Villa Park.

That's was my thinking too. I thought with Villas financial problems the FA might throw them a bone,I don't suppose it would be enough money to take a huge difference anyway.

I think the FA should nearly all their games around the corners of the country. The atmosphere at the KP, though may not be better than what Elland Road produced, would hands down be better than the docile Wembely. 

 

I think if the FA do this, plus Southgate improves a young England team who appear to work together and are media-friendly, I could be drawn back to watching England more.

We're not Leeds mate. The areas stood there last week are areas that stand every game.

Absolutely for this. I remember loving, properly loving, watching England as a kid and I think that goodwill towards the national team has been eroded. Playing around the country can only improve things. The atmosphere at Elland Road was brilliant. Get them playing up and down the country.
