I was really concerned that this world cup would turn into a fan bloodbath but I haven't heard of any real violence so far, though admittedly I haven't watched any news or TV apart from the matches since it started.

Just checked the news after seeing the Swiss croatian signs on the pitch and this is all I've found:

https://www.haaretz.com/world-news/europe/at-world-cup-in-moscow-israeli-soccer-fans-face-harassment-violence-1.6199536

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/06/22/croatia-fan-beat-world-cup-match-argentina/

https://www.thesun.co.uk/world-cup-2018/6528889/russia-world-cup-2018-violence-england-fan-attacked-gay-frenchman/

Is it because the Russians are winning well or is it the edict from Putin or simply football linked violence is a thing of the past (right)?

I actually looked this up yesterday because I was surprised we haven't seen more violence. I read an interesting interview with one of the hooligans who said things have been made too difficult for them at the WC, house arrests, facial recognition at the stadia and so they aren't bothering. He did say they will be back for the Euro's though. If I can find the article I'll post a link.

Please don't drag the friendly Croatians into this, the signs made by Xhaka and Shaqiri were Albanian/Kosovar, aimed at provoking Serbs.

Apologies where needed.

Interesting read. I think many "hooligans" have the same view as this Russian guy about "pride" and fighting.

Read something similar to this. If it's all true and Russia's establishment have gone out of their way to make it difficult for the hooligans so they can put Russia's best face forward then so be it.

I'd much rather look like a twat predicting violence pre-world cup than be proven right. Some of the scenes from the last euros were disgusting.

The hysteria was ludicrous before the tournament.

Putin was never going to allow violence to ruin this, his Russia is on show to the World.

thought this the other day too. Pleasantly surprised there's been nothing yet. But wonder if that will change if/when Russia are eliminated (could be playing Portugal/Spain next round so could be likely).

Or if/when England are eliminated?

Hopefully neither.

I have the sneaky feeling Russia can go places at this World Cup...

Anyone figure out what song the England fans are singing on loop?

No, but I think it ends with England going all the way..

I think the threat of violence stopped a lot of our fans going which probably made Vlad titter ...   then, as others have said, he puts the lead on them and shows what nice cuddly wuddly folk those Ruskies are.    Mind you, if we get through and Russia get knocked out I wouldn’t put it past the nasty tw@t to let his paramilitary ‘football fans’ loose ...   hope I’m wrong.

Putin is making sure that a nice, fuzzy Russia that doesn't actually exist is being portrayed to the world.

Or in other words, the majority of Russians are extremely nice people (shock horror) and the Russian authorities are doing a good job of clamping down on hooliganism (shock horror).

Yes they are (extremely nice people)  ........except for the one who threatened to murder me on the overnight train between Moscow and St Petersburg cause i was coughing to much. But that was before they had the world cup so he can be excused. :jawdrop:

I've met quite a few Russians and they've all been good people tbf.

They have this great quality like the Fins and the Dutch where they just say exactly what the **** they mean and don't mess around, it's great.

Met a fair few sound Russians (outside of Russia mind) although I learned the hard way not to drink Vodka with them! Agree with Finnegan that they are really direct.

Finding it odd that some people stating that Russia is a totalitarian state and then predicting a bloodbath/being surprised at the lack of violence in the tournament. You'd have to be off your head to kick off in Russia and the Russian hooligans know more than anyone what the consequences would be.

I'm only watching it for the football and the occasional zoom in on the crowd spectators

Can't be arsed about idiots causing each other pain............... Sorry

There was an incident at the Croatia v Argentina game where some set of cowards were picking on a Croat lad. There's a video on social media.

Other than that, I haven't heard anything.

Russia isn't too dissimilar to the UK these days tbh.

Both run by dictators and both have pockets of horrible, racist, homophobic nationalist thugs.

On the whole though mostly decent people who just want to live an inclusive, happy life but have to suffer the bullshit of the aforementioned above.
