As you know I've championed Maguire and think he's great for us, but if I'm honest and he wants to leave I'd take a record fee for him. I think we have a few very good young CBs in our squad who can perform. I really want to see Sam Hughes given time. He defends well and knows better than many attackers how to score.

That's absurd.

He's a key player and irreplaceable at the moment. The cash won't take us anywhere, players in the 50-60M range wouldn't come here anyway and it would lead us to use Morgan again and/or gamble with the youngsters. There is just no way we would sell him this season unless we want to head straight to the Championship.

I honestly don't why people think money is always the solution. Didn't you see what happened to Southampton?

So how many times have you seen our other talented CBs play?

No doubting Maguire is great but he's apt to make at least one defensive blunder a game. FT were on his back last year and anyway if Liverpool offer £100m for him we should let him go.

FT is mostly full of crap, most of the time.

Either the player is world class or he's shit and both adjectives can be earned in two successive games, if not one.

I rate Maguire highly and with Evans we now have the chance of build a solid CB pair for which we've crying out loud since forever. Blunders are the lot of any footballer and there is no defender who won't make a couple of them in a season.

I don't see how selling our best defender and throwing inexperienced youngsters in the cold water is going to improve us in any way. This year is crucial, the immortals are almost gone or not part of the first team anymore. It's a new era and Harry will be a key part of it. Full stop.

I wouldn't sell him even for 100M, that would be the most expensive one way ticket to the relegation.

Talk sport discussing HM moving to top 6 club! They reckon £50m...cant see him staying beyond a season sadly if big boys come...

Posted

At some point ownership/management needs to effectively sell their vision of what the club can be to the McGuire's/Ndidi's - the guys who the big clubs are going to want. And at the same time win more games.  Part of what sways them is the belief that this club won't be able to compete at the highest levels - which to me puts even more pressure on the manager - i.e. Claude - to win more and push for a top 6 finish.  Winning the title created a window - the same as it does for NBA clubs who draft a young superstar.  They then have a couple of years to really upgrade the squad in order to make the star want to stay once his first contract runs out.  If it fails, the guy leaves and the window closes.

In the case of LCFC, ownership can take a hard line stance but if the player can't be swayed to a vision of what's possible - he's going to want to leave eventually - sooner than everyone wants.

So true

lets muddy the waters a bit and say a couple of CL teams approach his agent and offer him 150k/week

we are paying him 80k/week

is it fair for us to just carry on regardless and expect the player to continue as if nothing has happened ...........  shouldn’t we be facing up to the fact that we either pay our ‘superstars’ closer to their market rate or we have to let them go? (For a higher than market value price).  Or we get into the mix for champions league places ourselves.  (Easier said than done).

Whilst a player like Maguire may have been unsure about a move to a top six team for fear he may not play regularly, it’s likely different now after his England performances. of course he could have a mare today and no one will come knocking as a consequence!

Apparently not

I questioned that mail article (which was tweeted by mail online) but my tweet wasn’t replied to. he had a significant s/o fee that reflected his supressed transfer fee (due to him running down his contract to one year) .  There are different ways around a contract but his effective salary is approx 80k/week.  For example - A ten mill s/o fee over 10 years is effectively 40k/week. The press are just pushing stories for clicks - especially as yanited are said to be leading the hunt.

Percy has also mentioned a similar figure, so I would say that article is accurate. They're just discussing base salary figures - of course all players will have a higher effective salary than their base for various reasons.

If this is what we are offering him he will soon be off !

Can imagine the Manchester clubs would be willing to sort him out £125k a week easy

I’m afraid if we don’t put him on the top earners his agent will have him sold soon enough

ii agree. he needs to be on what Vardy and schmeichel are on. let him know how much we value him. he has to stay or we are a selling club and we might as well get relegated and go back to yo yo-ing around because it will be clear we have no ambition beyond that

We won the league great but the season before and since have marked us really as a team who could collapse at any point

there is no real sense of stability on Or off the field and we are selling all our major assets for peanuts ! Kante/Mahrez/drinky sold for less than Liverpool got for just Coutinio !!!

The owners said “top 6” club , well I’m afraid all our best players are at a top 6 club but only after they leave us !

Maguire is the future if we sell him in next 2 season we are nothing but a selling club , the new Southampton !!!!

Pay him £100k a week or what ever Vardy is on and build a defence around this amazing talent for the next 10 years !

I'm not bothered about Mahrez going tbh, hes been absent for 2 years on and off. maguire is the future though, we have needed solid CB's since kante left and now we have them we must keep them,, at least for 2 years, if we havent made europe by then , well, i wouldn't begrudge him a move to a team that does have european football

I really like Maguire, but it is true that he does have the odd mistake in him.  We might not be able to replace him with a better footballing CB but I don't think he is irreplaceable defensively.

It seems that people have really sat up and taken notice of his WC performances.  I think we will keep him this year regardless but I think it is inevitable he will end up at a CL club. Much depends on the player himself.

If it's Pep, the price is double.

I think this tournament is doing wonders for Maguire’s confidence.  That, plus continued improvement in positioning and reading the game, will turn him into an elite player.

With Maddison (and Jahanbakhsh?) we may also provide him more consistent service on set pieces.

Enjoy your raise, Harry, you’ve earned it.

The good thing about Harry is the fact that he has it all in his toolbox. He's a physical defender who can actually drive the ball forward and he only has to refine his game. The bad thing is, He has mental lapses and goes for risky, low-quality passes when he's far up the field which will lead to teams feasting on the counter-attack.

Harry will only be leaving if a club comes in with an offer the owners cant or wont turn down. They showed this with mahrez in jan. Bar half a million, the fee offered was pure profit. With Harry the starting point is 17m before profit. He is 1 yr into a 5 year contract at what ever wages he was happy to sign for. Like Vardy and Mahrez before they will probably double his wages on a new contract that includes a massive release clause. Not because they have to, but because of his first season with us. His stock has risen so high. It makes sense for them to reward him and recognise the talent and potential he has to become a world class player. Ive said before. We are seeing the new Bobby Moore. Trust me.The owners will not be bullied and while he is on 4yrs more they will see that in 2yrs time in todays inflated market, he will be worth far more than 50m. Remember. Nobody was talking 60m+ for Mahrez, even post champions season.
