Ten years ago today, Leicester City set a record. They became the first club to buy a non-league player for a million pounds.

When Jamie Vardy had his unveiling pictures taken at the King Power Stadium – the striker wearing a hoodie from the club shop as City were between kits deals at the time – few could have imagined the heights he and the team would reach. A decade on, his transfer is considered one of the best gambles in football history, his story considered one of the best tales in football history.

And even at 35 years old, he arrives into the final week of the Premier League season with the best goals per game record of any player to feature this term. His success is in part because of who he is and the journey he has been on, but also because of his evolution over the past decade.

 

Ten years ago, Vardy was a player who hared around the pitch, chasing any lost cause and always at risk of a red card as a result. He would rush from side to side and dive into challenges to try to stop defenders clearing their lines. On the ball, he would run with it, straight at defenders, knocking it and sprinting after it, knowing he had the pace to win the race.

It was not complicated, and it’s a style that has been a part of Vardy’s reputation ever since. But the reason he is still performing at the top level now is because he is different. He needed to evolve because defences soon wised up to what made him so effective. The space in behind disappeared.

And he did evolve. He is craftier in the box, his movements more subtle. He conserves energy by slinking around the top end of the pitch, waiting for his time to strike. The quality of his finishing and his decision-making in the area has sky-rocketed.

No, he is not blasting them in from range (apart from that one time against Liverpool), but look back through Vardy's goals and you'll find delicate near-post flicks, superbly-executed lobs, over-the-shoulder volleys, brave headers. They're not all one-on-ones.

In fact, his goal-scoring has developed to such an extent that Michael Owen's infamous statement looks even sillier now than it was when he said it in 2016. The former Liverpool and England striker said: "Even when he was scoring loads of goals last season (2015-16) he wasn't convincing me as a natural finisher.

"He's the type of centre forward or type of finisher that is very much head down and hit it. He goes for power a lot. He's not necessarily a real cute, classy type of finisher. He doesn't once lift his head. He almost hits it through goalkeepers. To be a finisher like that you need a lot of luck – sometimes you'll have it, sometimes you won't."

That is a hell of a lot of luck Vardy's had then, to now be sat on 132 Premier League goals. He needs 18 more to catch up with Owen. And this past week, his four goals in two games have shown he is still as, if not more, important for City than he was during his early days at the club.

Plus, if you saw his performance against Watford at the weekend, you can safely say he has so much more to his game than just scoring. He can drop deep and link play, spreading balls wide to the wingers or full-backs. For Harvey Barnes' first goal at Vicarage Road, Vardy was not calling for the ball as he ran into the box, but rather telling Marc Albrighton exactly where to put the cross for Barnes to score.

Manager Brendan Rodgers said at his press conference on Tuesday: “He’s a real icon of Leicester and of the league. His journey, coming into professional football at 25, scoring his first Premier League goal at 27, and then to go on to score the goals he has and make the impact he has, he truly is such a unique player.

“Jamie’s story, from playing in qualification games in the FA Cup to winning the FA Cup, winning the Premier League, playing in the Champions League. He really is a great of this football club. I also think in the Premier League, he’s up there with the top strikers.

“Thankfully you see over these past few games, he’s getting his fitness. He hasn’t played as much as we would have liked, but you see the impact he would have had on our team because the pace is still there, the cuteness, the cleverness, the bravery is still very much there.

“He’s clearly a great signing for the club back then, for Nigel (Pearson) and the people behind it that took him. A £1m deal is an absolute bargain when you look 10 years later."

That was a prime Jamie Vardy goal today. Nipped in front of the defender, showed a bit of a pace, faked the shot, cuts in and cooly finishes. I'm gonna miss watching this legend!

Had Vardy been fit throughout, the Foxes might have challenged for the European places again - they collected 41 points from a possible 72 with him in the side and just 11 from 42 when he was absent.

We're getting him on a new deal right? 

 

Just watched his goal from yesterday about 5 times. It's like he hasn't aged a bit. 

 

Has there been any noise about a new deal? 

 

He's clearly got more than one year left in him.

I remember when Forest signed Trevor Francis for £1 million and it seemed incredible back then because it more than doubled the existing British transfer record. Yes, Francis scored the winning goal when Forest won the European Cup but apart from that goal he didn't do much else for them. I don't think he even broke the 40 goal mark in all competitions in his Forest career.

 

Francis would have been about the same age when he joined Forest as Jamie Vardy was when he joined us for the same fee, only 33 years later after a lot of inflation, especially in the football transfer market. And Jamie hasn't finished yet.

 

I can't think of a better value buy in English football history. And I can't think of a better value sell than Harry Maguire.
