League Cup Semi-Final - Villa

Recommended Posts

Qualification after losing was something that happened in the FA cup, don't remember it being part of the league cup (except for in exceptional circumstances).

But they also removed the spot for the losers in the FA Cup now (hence Watford weren't in Europe this season)

Another pinch yourself moment!

Villa fans gutted they're playing us over two legs wishing they'd got Man Utd or Man City.

Wow.

Hardly surprising given a) the current league table and b) the recent result at Villa Park.

Those Brummies obviously know their football.

We play Wigan at home on the Saturday before the first leg in the FA Cup.  After a gruelling Christmas/New Year schedule that should be a good opportunity for BR to rest virtually all the first XI and a week off to prepare for the Villa game. There's not a lot of downside to playing a second XI as everyone of our players would get in the Wigan side and if we lost it's not like we were in the business end of the tournament.

Villa have Fulham away and if they want to take the FA Cup seriously then they'll have to play a strong side against them.

You suggest we play our second string against wigan to rest players for the semi but why would villa take the FA cup any more seriously than us and save rest their first team also. Realistically it is more likely the otjher way round as we would have afar better chance, on form, have reaching the latter stages of the FA cup than them. I think they are more likely to see the league cup as bird in the hand and be going all out for it.

Possibly but the point I was making is that we can afford to rest our first XI against Wigan and still come through. Villa will need to be near full strength if they really want to progress in the FA Cup away at Fulham.

Villa may well concentrate on the league and Carabao Cup and it's probably wise of them to do so. One thing is for sure with the fixtures they have coming up in the league they need to be fully firing in all of those games. No free hits for Villa over this period as they play a season defining four games against Burnley and the bottom three sides. So they will be as fatigued as us come our fixture.

Yeah, whilst it would be great to have long runs in all competitions, focusing on a Champions League place plus Wembley appearance makes sense. If we ended up qualifying for the Champions League and winning the League Cup, that would probably go down as our second best ever season. If we ended up 2nd and winning the cup in terms of all round performance possibly even our best, though the title win will always remain as the greatest moment this club has ever witnessed...

Until we win the Champions League next season!
