Corona Virus

Message added by Mark

No political discussion in this topic. That is complaining about a country, a politician, a party and/or its voters, etc

I can't believe that this virus is getting so much publicity. Every year folk die from viruses which affect the lungs. This one is just another variant of previous ones like SARS. The RNA sequencing of this new strain is already known using the fast Fourier transform, and existing drugs such as interferon will doubtless cure most sufferers. So fear not, we're not all doomed just yet!

That’s a shame, hopefully WW3 wipes us out before Liverpool win the league.

Not to trivialise this too much....

but did anyone ever have that game for iPhone where you’d basically start a virus in a random country and mutate it until it wipes out the population of the world? This isn’t just me is it? I haven’t dreamt this existed? lol

Plague inc, great game.

Still play it now. It’s been updated and there’s even a mad cow disease you can start spreading.

Has this thread virally mutated into a games thread?

Hate to dampen the mood on this Corona virus thread, just as a measure of the bio security of the Wutan quarantine, a team of reporters drove in with only temperature checks and a couple of hours later were escorted out again by the local police!

So much for containment 🤨

Bit tired but read it had a 14 day period before symptom's manifested but it was fully contagious long before then, so it is probably already out.

It's out for sure, but my point is more that China is utterly incapable of implementing any effective measures to limit the spread due to its totalitarian regimes secrecy, its over run health care system and the sheer size of its mega cities literally stuffed with hosts.

Especially when tens of millions have just spent a week travelling across the country to go home for the holiday ..... this could become very ugly indeed .....

Yesterday was 2,700 infected, today over 4,500. 80 deaths yesterday, 106 today. First case in Germany.

The actual number must be much higher than that.  A doctor from Wuhan said 2 days ago that over 90,000 people have been infected in Wuhan. All hospitals in Wuhan are overwhelmed with patients.

China spent the first couple of weeks desperate to cover it up, it's quarantine efforts were probably too little too late and won't work. Nobody can trust what they're saying. There's probably a lot more unconfirmed cases and unknown deaths but it doesn't seem to be that dangerous to otherwise healthy people.

Also it shows how impressive modern science is. They had the virus isolated and mapped its genome almost instantly and shared it across the world. Now there's already a vaccine in animal testing.

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/2020/01/how-coronavirus-spreads-on-a-plane/

"Preliminary results indicate a transmissibility rate for the new coronavirus ranging from 2.0 to 3.1 people. That’s higher than influenza - 1.3 to 1.8 - but similar to SARS, which has a basic reproduction number in the 2 to 4 range. So, coronaviruses are slightly more prone to spreading between people.

"The case-fatality ratio - or death-to-case ratio - is the number of people killed by disease divided by the number of people who catch it. Seasonal influenza, despite being considered a global scourge, technically kills a relatively small proportion of its cases, with a case-fatality ratio around 0.1%. The reason the flu is an annual public health emergency is because it infects boatloads of people - 35.5 million in the U.S. across 2018 and 2019, which led to 490,000 hospitalizations and 34,200 deaths. That’s why health officials perpetually recommend that people receive a flu shot."

In comparison, 3% of 35.5 million Coronavirus mortality rate would be 1,065,000 deaths and 6.2 million serious/critical hospitalisations.

"If SARS or the Wuhan Coronavirus ever reached millions of people, it could be devastating. Unlike with influenza, Landon says, the entire human population is susceptible to this Coronavirus because no one has ever had it before - and there is no specific treatment like a vaccine."

looking at it from another side, they've managed to build a 1000 bed temporary hospital in 6 days on the outskirts of Wuhan.  Thats astonishingly good, whether it's prefab or not!

Over here, we'd still be engaging in public consultations and making sure no badgers are going to be upset!

On a completely separate note, i read a book a while ago on the Spanish Flu pandemic - "Pandemic 1918".  Really interesting read and amazing to think how far we've come from a knowledge point of view in such a relatively small space of time.
