Music Leicester City have run out to

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I hope this is okay to post here – if not, moderators please move or delete as appropriate.

I’m part of a team at the University of Sheffield, led by Dr Chris
Stride. We've published a number of academic papers and magazine
articles relating to football history, on subjects such as statues and
replica shirts (see, for example
sportingstatues.com, and
https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/17460263.2019.1578255).

Our current project is investigating the music that football teams have
run or walked out of the tunnel to over the years.

We are looking for the music that Leicester City have run out to for as
many seasons in the past as you can recall. We are simply interested in
the title of the song, the artist who recorded it, and for which seasons
Leicester City ran out to this. Any help you can give us to
piece together the different songs that your club has run out to would
be hugely appreciated.

If you have any personal anecdotes around the reasons for the songs
being used, or the changes between them, that would also be fantastic.

I should also add that we are not interested in goal music, or a song
that is played at the final whistle, but just the song that is on the
tannoy system as the players enter the field.

If you think someone else may be able to help, or you have any
questions, please let us know!  We would be very happy to discuss the
project.

Thanks for your time,

Joe Headland

We have always ran out to the Post Horn Gallop.

I had always assumed that the PHG was something to do with fox hunting hence the connection but apparently it is German and something to do with mail trains so really a bit random?

Anyway, I think I'd prefer that association to fox hunting.

Always loved the Post Horn Gallop just because of its weird distinctiveness.

Still remember the heart-pumping thrill of hearing it in the queue to get in the Kop if I was late getting to Filbert Street or it was a big crowd.

There were very few toffs chasing foxes round Highfields when I was growing up, but I just love it anyway. Like our club, it's totally unique and pretty odd.

Hope we never change it.

I only remember one match in recent history when it wasn't PHG, there was uproar and it changed back.

It has varied over the years between recorded and live. The recorded versions sound better, but the live version gives us something that few other clubs do.

The second half version which splits opinion was actually recorded in the 80's but not used until more recently.

Used to be Shep who walked to the centre spot to play the PHG wasn’t it? Always made me laugh because he used to run out of steam about half way through bless him lol I like having somebody play it live from the centre circle it’s unique.

Im sure his name was Shep unless I’ve completely dreamt that.

At one point (early noughties) didn’t they get rid of the bugler for an over the tannoy version, so the bugler sat in the West Stand and played it himself every game just before the teams came out until he was brought back?

They did in the Early 2000's, think it would be around 04/05

Old Henry got the boot from doing it mid way through the season and they went to the jazzy pre recorded version, so Henry (still dressed in all the gear) would play it from the stands as quite a few people would tell him they preferred his version.

I sat next him and his wife who had season tickets for the couple of years when he was playing.I believe the club took his tickets away the end of that season as he stopped going.

One of the nicest blokes you could ever of met, really loved the club and would often tell tales of games gone by, unfortunately he died a couple years ago now

Yeah, the dance version needs dropping and the old version reviving for the second half. Way more rousing.

I don't know, I've grown to really love the sense of anticipation/rising dread you get when you try to work out whether or not the teams are going to come out in time to beat the coconut shell horse part
