Toddybad Posted 18 March 2020 Posted 18 March 2020 So, we're all either cooped up at home or soon to be cooped up at home, possibly for months, maybe for the next year, it could even be longer. This should change us as individuals, nations and a world. It occurs to me that there's two opportunities here, first of all to use the time to do or learn things we haven't before, and second to re-evaluate what we want from life once we're out the other side. I thought it would be interesting to see what people come up with to keep themselves amused or how we all change over time. From my point of view, 2020 was supposed to be amazing. After years and years or debt and crap I had booked all sorts of things I've wanted to do. They're not going to happen now. But they can in the future. We've all got stuff we want to do, that stuff might be more important after we've won what is effectively a war. It would be nice to have a thread dedicated to what we're going to do differently, better, how we are going to change. Personally I'm thinking of trying teach myself to paint and the piano via a keyboard I've never really used. I might end up living in my own for a few months so need something to do.
spacemunky Posted 18 March 2020 Posted 18 March 2020 I'm drinking a lot, playing video games and napping. So, nothing has changed here
UPinCarolina Posted 18 March 2020 Posted 18 March 2020 I like this topic. Great post, OP. I’ve got a long list of classic movies, shelves of books, significant albums, and projects relating to my academic interests that I can be working through. These are all things that I will be pursuing. The mind needs to remain active. I can keep running. I can practice yoga. I can take my dog on longer walks, and spend time with my wife. I’m not going to stop dreaming about the future, and I’m going to make it a point to stay in contact with my social network through whatever means necessary.
Voll Blau Posted 18 March 2020 Posted 18 March 2020 Learning a language is a great way to spend your time. The Duolingo app is free, (sometimes) fun and has really helped me. Would definitely recommend it.
Xen Posted 18 March 2020 Posted 18 March 2020 Going to keep running for as long as I'm able to - had a week off from marathon training but starting to get bored now without the routine. Afaik there's nothing wrong with running solo outside so I'll take whatever chance I can get - especially as we don't have a garden so otherwise I'd be confined to a flat without much natural light Otherwise at home I'll possibly start doing yoga and some kettlebell stuff that I've thus far been putting off. Planning on getting a dartboard and picking darts up again as well. I'll still be working, but going to spend a lot of that time (plus some free time) making a more concerted effort to teach myself to code (Python and SAS for those wondering, plus extending my R knowledge) so hopefully when everything is back to normal I can push for a promotion that I'd been angling for, or move up elsewhere. Undoubtedly going to be playing a lot more video games and watching TV. I'd like to teach myself to be a better cook, too, although not sure how easy that's going to be...

This is my plan, I really want to learn Spanish so I'm hoping to use this time to give it a go with Duolingo
Innovindil Posted 18 March 2020 Posted 18 March 2020 There's a field of cows about 30 seconds walk from me, my plan is to learn how to kill and butcher one should it be required. #lifeskills
ALC Fox Posted 18 March 2020 Posted 18 March 2020 10K training for me. Should take me to June when I'm hoping to do a 10K in Salford if all is well by then. I did creative writing at uni and I've been putting off writing to earn sh!t wages for a long time. With fewer opportunities to socialise in the evenings currently I really want to get back into it. Once we get out the other side, I do also hope we have a new-found respect for our poor, sick, and vulnerable, those who look after them, and also ourselves. I hope we can all rewire ourselves to be that little bit less selfish and focus a bit more on how we can make society and the world better in all sorts of ways, from healthcare, to elder care, to climate change, to animal welfare and all sorts of other things. I hope we can all just learn to be better. The country and the world has become very divided in all sorts of ways in recent years. I hope we can put a great deal of that aside once this is over.

If you've always wanted to take up running or get fitter in general, you'll never get a better opportunity in your life than the current moment. Couch to 5K and all that jazz. Also, learn an instrument/new language.

Had planned to do loads this year but it’s all gone to shit now. did consider taking up running but it’s always bloody raining
Paninistickers Posted 18 March 2020 Posted 18 March 2020 Intend for my garden to be immaculate. Paint the MDF wardrobes I can never be arsed to do. Get fit and tanned in garden..need to work on my language skills which work think I'm fluent at when they hear me on the phone (but I'm not, B2/C1 in reality....but a chance to shunt up to C1/C2) Maybe get a GCSE book in a subject I was terrible at at school -physics perhaps - and see if I can get a grasp of it
Izzy Posted 18 March 2020 Posted 18 March 2020 Kin el it’s like the New Years resolution thread all over again

I'm currently doing a 10k programme using the Nike Run Club app. It's been great so far but have had a couple of weeks off with a cough and cold (no fever!) so I'm restarting it this week. Learning an instrument or new language would be great. I've toyed with learning French (general fascination with the language) and Korean (a work connection, I've been there before, and genuinely love the place). You're right, this is best chance to learn something or make those changes you've been putting off for ages
davieG Posted 18 March 2020 Posted 18 March 2020 I've just ordered this I used to do a lot of reading but lost the motivation for some unknown reason, I'm hoping this might get me going again. Please don't tell me it's crap.

I Think I will learn chinese, then when we can all travel again,go there and start swearing in their language!!! Nothing better when travelling, and locals & waiters, think you cant understand or speak their language...then rip off a few sentences,Mentoring poor service,in their restaurants/cafes/cantina in their own language....Saying how more welcoming it is,in Another establishment up the road....
FoxesDeb Posted 18 March 2020 Posted 18 March 2020 Cooking as well, I really really hate it and see it as a proper chore. This time may see me being far more inventive when I'm left with nothing else but a tin of corned beef, some tarragon and a bit of gnocchi. I would love to enjoy it though, so maybe now is the time for me to embrace cooking
Izzy Posted 18 March 2020 Posted 18 March 2020 In all seriousness, I'll probably end up watching every season of Breaking Bad for the fourth time.

Guest Electric Yetis Posted 18 March 2020 Posted 18 March 2020 I've just re-signed back up to ancestry.com. Family trees fascinate me. Did the DNA thing a couple of years ago in the hope I had some exotic history. Turns out 96% British, 2% German, 2% Swedish. Boring. Already today discovered more about my Great Uncle. I knew he died in WW1 bur was amazed to find a photo of him and a description of where he died. Turns out he died in the Battle of Bazentin Ridge on 14th July 1916, aged 22. His younger brother also died in battle in France in June 1918, also aged 22, although have struggled to find out more info about him.
