I don't suppose anyone knows, but are there still significant covid restrictions in Australia, New Zealand or Singapore? I might just go for it if there aren't.

Melbourne (I think) just went back into lockdown as they found a few cases lol

Who is doing the calling and visiting peoples homes? Hired contracted people? Because the police haven't got the resources to deal with burglaries nevermind this lol

Test and Trace ring everyday and read off a script , if they believe your not being straight they can escalate to the police/border force.

If your really unlucky you might get a contractor come knock to see if your in.

They are definitely checking more now , last summer they didn’t call once. But I guess with more people going away they probably don’t have the resources to check everyone

They've got a company involved, don't recall the name, Mitio or something.

You have to confirm name, address, passport number I think my friends said.

Pretty much the only silver lining. Some of the coastal towns will be celebrating this like a world cup, personally can't blame them after the battering they've taken.

Obviously great for hotels and other businesses but the infrastructure and facilities in places like Blackpool can't handle the numbers. Bank holiday and the last couple of days have been ridiculous here.

Like all these things, they can check or fine all they like, but it won't necessarily stand up in court.

Doubtful there is a law compelling you to answer the phone or door. Surely some serco contractor on 10 bob an hour  in a hi-viz and an ID lanyard has absolutely zero authority to make demands on a doorstep

And has anyone seen these private covid 'Certificates'.?...border authorities wouldn't have a clue if you'd knocked one up on Word.

You can't travel to any of those countries (can you?) without a significant reason such as a family bereavement. Basically their borders are closed. The EU still don't have the UK on its white travel list for leisure travel and won't review that until mid June I think so Faroe Islands, part of Denmark, and Ginraleter are also off limits though on the green list.  No one lives on South Georgia which is basically an old whaling station. Israel is open but doesn't look that appealing right now so guess Iceland is pretty much the only destination open to Uk travellers.

Really they should just have a green and red list not this confusion with amber.

Same down here but towns like ours can't complain about tourism that we're totally reliant on.

When I had COVID in January I just blocked track and trace and didn’t hear anything else from them.
Being woken up by someone asking you questions off a script is the last thing you want when you feel awful.

What would probably make sense is to have a green list for "safe" countries to travel to, an amber list to highlight countries that are about to go red/green (let's say countries are on there for a week or so before they move or not) and a red list for countries where travel is not allowed.

Green means go, red means no. The amber list is then only for transitional countries who are at risk of moving to red or with a chance of becoming green soon.

Forget the fact that the powers in charge have an agenda they are following at the expense of the public including the travel sector who are continually being shafted.

Was it Portugal's 445 new cases yesterday or the 1 death registered yesterday out of a population of 10 million that took it off the green list? lol

I wonder how this period specifically will be remembered in 20 years time.

No. It is more to do with different variants that are being found in Europe. This combined with the relatively low vaccination rate in Europe. Basically the Government here is scared of not being seen to be doing something having cocked up so many times already.

We're supposed to be buying a new AZ vaccine being developed to tackle the SA variant and others and to be used this autumn on all the over 50s. Until this happens and until Europe get its act together on its own vaccination programme I don't think we will see significant or long term opening up of travel. Just my opinion so could be wide of the mark.

When we get the Cornish variant we may as well give up on all travel completely.

If they could at least give justifications that make sense, people might understand, but they don't. They would have been better off just keeping all countries on the red list until they are actually ready to allow foreign travel. Making things worse for themselves and losing more and more trust (except that most people will probably vote the same people into power again).

Absolutely terrifying 🤣

It's unbelievable, my wife is heartbroken, she hasnt seen her parents for almost 2 years. What is the point of this ****ing green list, not to mention the money we are losing on the NON REFUNDABLE PCR tests. 35 cases per 100k population there. Funny how this happens AFTER the ****ing CL final.

Utter, utter, *****.

Possibly. I just think it would be easier for all concerned to say yes or no and not have anything in between unless for essential reasons. Not sure it is the Government who have the agenda here. Tail wagging the dog a bit.

Sorry to hear this for your wife. Couldn't she get a seriously ill granny?  Essential travel is still allowed isn't? Guess the 10 days isolating is an issue though?

What variants are being found in Europe that are not already in the UK (genuine question as I have not heard much)? Most of the EU are blocking UK travellers because of the Delta variant (the variant formerly known as the Indian variant). So actually they are being more protective of their own borders. Although those desperate for tourism from the UK (Spain, Portugal Greece etc.) don't really care.

Also, the EU (or at least most of the major players) are catching up with the UK vaccination levels. For example Germany are nearing 50% first vaccinations and 20% fully vaccinated having given over 50 million jabs (much larger country of course) and they are ramping up. They are hitting over 1 million jabs a day on some of the busy weekdays and averaging 750k a day over the past 7 days. I think by mid Summer, a lot of EU countries will reach a good point of vaccinations of their citizens to match where the UK is.

So August onwards should see some more opening of foreign travel certainly inside Europe. Maybe the UK will wait until after schools re-open to prevent mass surges.

What variant is dominant in Portugal that isn't currently in the UK?

The thing is there's no justification, that's why they aren't setting out any. If they laid out what needs to happen to allow foreign travel, we'd all soon realise either all the boxes have been ticked or they're unrealistic and never gonna happen, that's why they aren't doing it.

How can you achieve something when you have no idea what you're aiming for? It's pure politics. However, one good thing is that even more people might start to turn against this shower of shit.

If worrying about variants is the reason that we aren't opening up, sadly it's going to be a long long time before we go back to 'normal'. Although I don't believe this is the case at all, it's all to do with boosting our own economy.

Sorry to hear that, feel for Portuguese in the UK. I have a portugese friend of a friend who I met at the weekend who was in a similar boat and due to go back in a couple of weeks for a long weekend. He cant work from home so basically cant go anymore as he'd be on unpaid leave on his return for 10 days.

It's all too convenient for them to blame the CL Final game.

Utter rubbish. Cases as you say aren't even that high.

The whole testing hysteria fueled by govt guidelines and project fear has essentially made the UK a rod for its own back.

Until people refuse to be tested, we're in an ongoing never ending cycle of nonsense.

Listened to further advertising on the radio once again today actively encouraging symptomless people to seek out their twice a week free tests.  It's appalling.  The money being thrown at it makes it even more so.

I did the same in March when I had it. I was getting up to 6 calls a day. Literally answering the phone answering their questions then less than an hour later someone else ringing and asking exactly the same questions. Ended up blocking them on the 3rd day of it.

absolutely shambolic, and despite not knowing you, I’m genuinely sorry for your wife that your having to deal with this bizarre situation.

I also do wonder how much the government are making off these PCR test too. Like in your case, your stung with now paying for something you know longer need, I’m sure they still benefit.
