The veteran Leicester City centre-back has only started one game in the Premier League this season, but is set to sign up for a 10th term at the King Power Stadium

Wes Morgan understands the Leicester City role he will be taking on if he signs up to a 10th season at the King Power Stadium this month.

Morgan is out of contract at the end of June, but manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to keep the experienced centre-half for another year, extending a career at the King Power Stadium that began in January 2012.

An ever-present in the title-winning season, Morgan has started just once in the Premier League this term, with his focus now on providing guidance to younger players, ensuring a professional atmosphere is maintained, and retaining the spirit in the squad.

“A player like Wes is selfless,” Rodgers told the Big Interview podcast. “He’s this wonderful team guy who hasn’t played so much for me but he knows how important he is to me in terms of the culture and environment that I always like in the team.

“He is a really important player to ensure the spirit is maintained and he gives great advice to the younger players also.

“Your brain starts to talk to you as an older player: ‘Am I quick enough?’ You don’t want to be exposed. The best ones understand where they’re at in their game and understand that there is another role to play which isn’t playing 50 games a season.

“That’s where Wes fits in perfectly. He trains as if he is going to play every week, but he respects what the club is trying to achieve and he’s there to offer guidance to the younger players like Cags [Soyuncu], who are in the team.

“I also know that he’s come in a number of times for me and been first class.

“He’s a really humble guy, a warrior, he’s come through the lower levels, earned his right to play in the Premier League and is still a very valuable player for our squad.”

But just because Morgan’s game-time will be limited next season – he could be fifth-choice centre-back behind Jonny Evans, Caglar Soyuncu, Filip Benkovic and a new signing – that does not mean that Rodgers will let him rest on his laurels.

Morgan, at 36, is already the third oldest outfield player in the top flight, behind only Phil Jagielka and Glenn Murray, but Rodgers believes he can improve.

“He’s a highly respected player and he’s coming towards the end of his career,” said Rodgers, “He’ll always be a club legend, being the captain of the team that won the Premier League title, but also the type of person he is.

“But whether you’re an older player or a younger player, for me there’s always development. Whether you’re 21, or 31, or 35, for me, I always think you can develop.”

Leader, Legend.

Good to keep around, we need to ensure new players understand the club and its ethos.

Will be taking a pay cut I'd imagine so not going to break the bank.

Some of the goals this man has scored for us as well, he's actually become more of a welcome asset since Rodgers came in and he was less of a regular. It feels like he's become more efficient but it's probably that he's no longer the obvious scapegoat that he became when he played regularly and we lost. Either way, both him and Fuchs when they come in to the team seem to always do a decent job and that's essential to have in a squad.

It would be nice to see Wes involved in coaching in someway, Rodgers speaks highly so could be one to develop for the future.

Depending on how long Rodgers is with us Morgan could replace Kola Toure who has spoken of a wish to get into management and could therefore leave if an opportunity opened up.

I can see Walsh getting that job.

Yes I think Morgan should have a bigger future, if he has the leadership qualities people suggest then there is no reason why he can go into management or coaching and be a real asset.

I do think more of an old time like Walsh with no prospects of management would be good in that role, or a Muzzy and Walsh duo.

Yes certainly possible, long term could even be a management replacement should Rodgers move on. It might be a way to build a long term ethos for the club in terms of structure and playing style.

I have definitely been a critic of him on the pitch at many times but he is the greatest captain we have ever had and deserves a contract just to keep everyone in control like a leader should.

Glad he's sticking around - absolute legend for sure - but if I see him lining up against one of the more dynamic and pacey front lines next season, I'll be pretty worried.

Is he?

The blokes an undeniable legend but he's hardly the best public speaker. I think he'll be our manager one day.

Very unlikley, he's not doing his coaching badges and has no desire to go into management. In a recent interview he was saying he's done a business management degree and is doing a corporate governance degree. The corporate side of the business is where he sees his future. DofF maybe, manager, absolutely not.

He was definitely one of the casualties of Puel. We were crying out for a younger guy to come in and partner JE at the start of last season so obviously when wes started as first choice we were going to be frustrated. Can’t fault him for that, it was simply poor management.

He has been spot on since BR came in.

Absolute hero but surprised Forest aren't throwing a bit his way for a last swansong tbh.

If that red filth quadrupled their current offer to Wes and we halved ours..... they'd still be shy by 10k a week.

I like the fact we could buy out their entire squad and the value would equate to one Ron Robert Zieler.

Agree with the first bit but I think the second bit is way off.

Also he is just a bloody hero and I love him.

Similar to Huth then, who is studying to become a sporting director. Would be fantastic to have both him and Wes working together at the club.

Would be great. You'd not want to take that duo on in a negotiation :S

Bloody love Wes.

Doesn't score many like Elliott/Walsh used to but they're memorable.

Southampton at home in the title winning season, actually had real tears after that match believing for the first time we could do it.

Man Utd away same season and the goal that gives us the point to effectively win the league.

Burnley away last season and the last minute winner in front of our fans in dire conditions, coming on in the 5th minute after Maguire's sending off and playing a blinder.
