shailen Posted 29 August 2020 Posted 29 August 2020 The arsenal goal is a good reason as to why playing out from the back can be really effective. It just needs to be implemented well.
l444ry Posted 29 August 2020 Posted 29 August 2020 Almost every team plays out from the back these days. The issue is does that team then proceed to play it longer to forward players from 20 yards further up the pitch or play across the back then attempt to play between the lines. Playing from the back is not a one size fits all situation.
adejo92 Posted 29 August 2020 Posted 29 August 2020 Our trouble with playing out from the back starts with Kasper Schmeichel. He's a great shot stopper but his distribution generally consists of a 160mph cannon of a ball to Evans from 8 yards or in the stands.
LcFc_Smiv Posted 29 August 2020 Posted 29 August 2020 Yes lets hit that big target man we have up front. You can play out from the back in many ways, either to the centre backs, the no 4 who drops deep or even the full backs/wingers who hug the touchline, it's not much of a problem apart from when we come up against world class players who press us well. As stated above its not a one size fits all solution and we can be very good at it, other days we get caught. How and when we implement it is more of an issue.

Wonder if KP have got bored with the whole project. I dont think the owners or kp are bored per say. I would imagine the hangover of vichais death and the no doubt legal fall out that comes with that plus covid wiping out 50% of their duty free business they have bigger concerns.
Guest Col city fan Posted 29 August 2020 Posted 29 August 2020 Our defence isn’t good enough to play out from the back If Ricardo is back in the side, then yes But I’d not be giving it to our current full backs

Benkovic is better with the ball than evans as well.
Mike Oxlong Posted 29 August 2020 Posted 29 August 2020 Quite often we play out from the back until we get penned in on the 5th or 6th pass when we then panic and hoof it anyway

nnfox Posted 29 August 2020 Posted 29 August 2020 It doesn't work well for us and the main reason is often that it's Ndidi, as the closest midfielder to the defence, who ultimately receives the ball. A brilliant tackler but his passing is WOEFUL. If we want to play a possession based game, then we need to bypass Ndidi
mozartfox Posted 29 August 2020 Posted 29 August 2020 Unfortunately Wes only plays side ways passes to Cags or the full backs. This takes the momentum out of any move meaning we end up facing two blocks of 4 Cags, Evans and Benkovic can play forward passes. Plus Kasper can on occasions play an excellent out ball. We really need to speed up our play from the back.

I can only hope because that is because he is inked in starting v West Brom. As a matter of fact - if Wes (or anyone) starts over Benko I will be more than a little miffed.
Gamble92 Posted 29 August 2020 Posted 29 August 2020 Id argue the worst part of our passing game and obvious new ball retention philosophy is how easily we let 20 or 30 minutes pass us by without doing much bar keeping up the possession stats. Its also a massive frustration when we are losing with 2 minutes left and we are passing it around the back like we're winning 6-0. Its amazing when we are outplaying teams and winning well. But when we aren't winning, and have no intensity, we really need the ability to change it up. I think a target man to bring on for Vardy is key.

Cags and Evans are good enough to play 40 yard balls to the wing/Vardy so I dont see how its an issue. We are at our worst when we're predictable. 5 hours ago, NaijaFox said: Doing it well is how successful teams play. Huge difference. We've needed to shake it up since Christmas when clubs started to work out how to nullify us. I get frustrated that we don't look at different ways to play. Knock it long sometimes, wide, into the channels, turn them around, put them under pressure, pin them back in their defensive third, make them make mistakes. I'm not sure BR is interested in doing that, sadly.
Chrysalis Posted 30 August 2020 Posted 30 August 2020 playing out from the back is good when done properly. Our problem is lack of closing down the opposition, too much passing back, way too much emphasis on possession vs going for it, lack of variance to our game, I think one reason Rodgers kept subbing Nacho was because he always tried to get it forward when he had the ball rather than playing safe,

A brilliant tackler but his passing is WOEFUL. If we want to play a possession based game, then we need to bypass Ndidi It's far from "woeful" (it's much more improved actually), but simply not the creative outlet the tactic requires. We need to get someone more creative (primarily Tielemans, because we do not want Maddison dropping too deep, and Ricardo when fit) as soon as possible. Too often we pass sideways and backwards across the back, and (especially when pressed) end up hoofing the ball upwards or out of bounds. We also need to move the ball quicker. In this respect, Evans, for all of his great defensive work (and Wes, when he's in there), often slow down the passing game (and not just when playing from the back), and if/when the ball gets to Ndidi (who should be the primary outlet, if creative), it is more often merely recycled back to the back four. As this rigmarole goes on, the opposition gets better set defensively or move up and stifle our options.
