The world is weird currently. This isn’t the new normal. Normal will return. This is, though, a season where odd things will happen. We might even see unexpected champions again, although I think it will be Liverpool.

Not having that to be honest, and I've got a big soft spot for Leeds. Spurs are bigger, both now and historically. There's an argument for Man City too, though it's not as strong.

When I was a youth it was the big 5, and Everton were one of them. I think the others were Arsenal, Liverpool, Man U and probably Aston Villa (maybe Leeds). Times change.

When I first started watching football (eighties) the big five were: Everton, Liverpool, Manchester United, Spurs and Arsenal.

 

Man City and Chelsea are the newcomers with their foreign billions.

It’s not about how big a club is, it’s what you do with it that counts- this is why we laugh at Spurs

I expect it will settle down as the weeks pass - the quick turnaround for the top clubs has clearly upset their prep

 

by the time Xmas arrives, I wouldn’t expect too much difference to last seasons finishing top eight

Hope so. As long as we're up there too I'd love to see other clubs finish in that top 6 that wouldn't normally nowadays.

It will make no difference to Sky, BT, BBC etc as they'll still bang on non-stop about the 6 no matter where they finish. Not sure what it'll take to shift that.

Really when we talk about big 6 - or big 5 as it used to be - we mean the teams with currently the most resources (money) to buy success. That’s really the only measure. 

 

The other measures are more subjective: historic success, ground size, fan base etc., that people bang on about to define “bigness”. But really it’s irrelevant to the here and now and the current massive advantage the current big six have in terms of spending power.

I wish that you were right, but I fear otherwise. This forum regularly has pointless to and fro about ground size comparison, club size comparison, wage size comparison, fanbase size comparison, and so forth. It's as entrenched as class comparison, which is also difficult to get away from.
