The target is always to improve

I mean, this should be tattooed in to the subconscious of every sporting institution in the world. Nothing else is acceptable.

Any club that just exists to hang on and do nothing but survive deserves to be relegated and replaced by one more ambitious.

Man City would have to drop off hugely and Liverpool/ Man U would have to have off seasons. With the recruitment being suggested in the summer we would have the strongest squad we have ever had should we keep who we want to.

A lot has been made of Man city this season but they are on 80 points, if they hit 90+ points nobody really has a chance but if the league is won in the 83-87 points range it's wide open for 3-4 teams to make a challenge depending on the individual season, injuries etc.

Assuming we get Champions League so aren't hamstrung recruitment wise, the biggest barrier to this will be replacing Vardy's goals.

Based on the last five months, that may not be as hard as one might expect.

Can we ever be title contenders again?

Yes - next season could be a great chance.

There will certainly be questions to be answered by the usual suspects

Man City: Forward line rebuild needed.

Liverpool: Can they right the wrongs of this current season? Does Salah leave?

Chelsea: TT has done great so far... but I’m not convinced he’s the sort of manager that would endear himself to players over a longer term.

Man Utd: Likely to spend a boatload again in the summer... badly.

Arsenal: Big rebuild needed

Spurs: Are Spurs

The Euro’s in the summer may also play a big part - yes it will impact our squad, but not as much as it will for the ESL Cartel.

So if we strengthen key positions in the squad whilst keeping hold of what we have and start the season in positive fashion... we could stand a chance to disrupt the top of the tree again.

Newly-promoted Leicester City's owner wants a top-five finish in the Premier League within three years.

"I am asking for three years, and we'll be there.

We won't take the huge leap to challenge the league's top five clubs immediately.

Do we have a chance to beat them? Yes, we have, but I think we need to establish our foothold in the league first and then we think about our next step.

The important thing is we're going with a belief that we can achieve,

It's important we continue to improve everything about ourselves. So, we can challenge for the top five. But, of course, one step at the time."

It's telling that he says 'top five' clubs.

He knew Spurs were perennial also-rans even back then lol

The year we won it, we didn't have Europe and we were out of the cups early. If we weren't in the CL I'd fancy us to be in the shake up, not sure with the CL.

This stays in my mind constantly because I went on record as comparing it to Vincent Tan at the time...might have been a little wrong.

Burney disagree. They're pretty happy finishing 17th every season and being 2 leagues above Sunderland, Ipswich, Sheff Weds and co.

And why is that a problem?

I did say "can" btw.

Unlikely, I think. We need a lot more strength in depth in attacking positions. At the moment we have only one genuinely top quality winger. His absence through injury has left us really short of pace and creativity, whilst also forcing us into a formation change. By contrast, if one of our top 4 rivals had a winger out injured they'd have another just as good to bring in. We're strong in other areas, though.

If anything, our title proved that every team starts on 0 points and has a chance to win - even if it is the tiniest, most unlikeliest of chances.
I don't think our fanbase as a whole expect that we are up there every year (except maybe @filbertway), but we finished fifth last year and have been top 4 virtually all season this year. We're not that far off right now that we cannot realistically dream about it.

Winning the title threw everything out of the window really and we didn't quite know what to do afterwards, hence the scattergun approach to transfers in that summer.

Since 2017 there's been a clear plan to buy lower to sell high and have the core of a younger squad. Fortunately we managed to convince a manager who works well with younger players that this was the job for him.

There is a fine line- you'd expect Liverpool to improve next season, Tottenham we aren't sure about, Everton will be well backed again, Chelsea look settled now so maintaining the place won't be straightforward but Champions League football should convince our key players to stay and allow us to attract a good level of player.

I was going to make a new thread but I’ll ask here. I’m a Forest fan. I started following football in the mid 90s I remember the Martin o Neil era and when he left Leicester went down hill and I remember thinking that they will never be as good as that side again.

Well clearly I was proven wrong, how did Leicester go from league 1 to at least a mid table premiership side in a short space of time?On paper the current squad looks average (with respect) It’s not as if they had a mega rich owner come along like at Chelsea or Man City.

Thanks for your time.

I reckon put owners, were willing to Listen learn, and still including hard decision Making & looked to bring the Club & City together.to

Made ALL Feel they were all Part of a Working family with intern & outside/Fassade targets...

More importantly when burnt they stayed humble & didnt panic....Accepted it would be a long project, and didnt run around empty-headed,or panic

when it didn t quite run as expected or wished for Family- Leicester city...

Top 4 is achievable again next season but likely a fair bit tougher than this season. Liverpool will have a more intact squad and probably add to it.

Chelsea look worryingly strong and you’d expect us to get nowhere near them.

Man United are unconvincing still (nothing to do with today), whilst Solskjaer remains in charge it benefits us.

Spurs and Arsenal don’t have the squads or management atm.

Everton and West Ham would be outsiders but if they recruited well, they could compete.

There are a lot of factors here.

The current owners are without doubt the biggest factor - it's the prerequisite on which all the success has been built.
You can point to the MON legacy, the Walkers Stadium, the consortium takeover when we were under administration etc. as being pivotal, which they were, but by and large the leadership, financial capital and planning that the Srivaddhanaprabhas brought with them is at the base of our revival.

I'm heading off to bed now, so I'll leave others that wish to elaborate on other factors.

We've improved season after season, but the title win was a huge factor as it really put us on the map in terms of global football. We've then slowly sold off our assets and reinvested the funds into improving the squad as well as the training facilties and it's looking like we are now a club competing for European football rather than looking the other way.

Recruitment has been fantastic and especially when we sold the likes of Kante, Mahrez and Maguire things could have taken a bad turn but we've replaced them with players who have improved the squad ten fold. I heard United's team today cost £24m more than ours, but ours is worth considerably more. We've rebuilt phenomenally well after 15/16, at a time where a couple of bad signings could have derailed our position in the premier league.

The squad harmony seems to be amongst the best I've seen from any group. I've never seen any of our players look visibly upset when they're not playing and it seems like everyone gets on with everyone.

Palace, Burnley, Newcastle. Id even add Everton in with how turgid their football is. Spent a fortune on signings yet park the bus every week, even against the bottom clubs. Honking! At least the likes of Brighton are trying to get a good way of playing but just lack one or 2 quality attacking players. If Brighton had the likes of James, DCL and Richarlison in their squad, they would play great football and be in the top 7 rather than Everton who are in the top 7 but are the most boring team in the league.

Not sure why I've gone off on an Everton rant in this thread but I've had a few beers after that United win 😀

I'd trust us to come back and do better next year than West Ham. Whilst Moyes is a steady manager, had become a bit underrated, he's still got his flaws - he can't beat bigger sides than his own away from home, ever. I still think with their ownership as well it invariably will go wrong at some point. We're a lot more stable.

Don't understand the comments about unrealistic expectations. Nobody 'expects' us to win the league again. I just don't think it's totally beyond us. Things change in football. Much as Sky want you to think it's all about a holy six clubs we've managed to get above a couple of them two years running now, and as even Liverpool have shown this year, even the best can go right off the boil. Man City are a worry as they have both an amazing manager and are very well run, but they're not infallable, look at last year.

Just keep gradually getting better, which I think we have done this year relating to last, and you never know when a chance may pop up.
