Sad to see Matty James go. Great player and played a key role in the greatest escape. A top character in the dressing room too apparently. Hope he goes to a good team. Pearson might want him at Bristol City?

Many on here were highly critical of the club for giving him a new 4 year contract in 2017, instead of just releasing him. I was one of those critics. But it looking back, I feel sorry for him and I hope he's financially stable now. Maybe a 2 year contract would been sufficient but nonetheless, good luck to him.

Even with hindsight it was remarkably generous. But the club stood by him I guess, which we can be proud of. How many other clubs would have got rid and not cared on bit for the lad?

As everyone has said, a fine player before injury set backs.

Was sat only meters from him in the front of stand when his leg went against Southampton was a horrible injury he never ever recovered from, Cambiasso really rubbed off on him up till that point and only for that injury he would have gone on and played for England and possibly been a real star, he would have usurped Danny Drinker and not have messed it up either, wish him well , he might make a decent manager one day

Club obviously valued him as a person aswell as a player. Coming in we'd heard about his knee and seeing him go down in our great escape was horrible, you knew it was bad. A great lad, could've been a solid Premier League player, did big things for us in the Championship too lest we forget :appl:

Deserves game time. There's always been a good player with Matty

who just been extremely unfortunate with injuries.

Can see him going to play for Pearson at Bristol City. Best of Luck to him.

Matty and andy king to Bristol...

Could have gone on to have a great career had he not been struck with injury in 2014-15, still young enough to have a decent career at Championship level. Yes we shouldn't have given him that 3 year contract but he played an important part in our rise over the last 7 or 8 years.

I'll still say it to whoever listens. If he hadn't got injured against Southampton he'd have been the one who went the route Drinkwater did (England, big transfer etc) and might not have cocked it up in the way he has since.

Also if he didn't get injured we might not have won the league. We might not have got Kante.

Kante replaced Cambiasso....

His career with us is summed up by a photo I’ve just seen on social media of the three players leaving - Wes holding the Premier League trophy, Fuchs holding the FA Cup and Matty James holding the Championship trophy. Really hits home how he barely played after getting injured in the Great Escape.

Nothing but good luck wishes for Matty James. Been good to see him get his career back on track at Barnsley and Coventry this season and he's shown his quality to help one Championship side build the foundations for a play off charge, and been instrumental in helping another survive in the league. It's the right time for him to move on, if not slightly overdue, but he'll be a great pick up for a Championship side and I hope we see him back in the top flight at some point.

Bristol City seems logical, he was first choice under Pearson during his time here.

Nige loved him.

And on top of that Rennie going there who'll have helped treat him throughout his injuries.

A good player and very important for us in getting out of the Championship. Also desperately unlucky with injuries.

The revisionism around his contribution, however, is always something that irks me. Let’s face it we were pretty poor for most of 2014/15 - he started only 20 PL games (by comparison Drinkwater started 16). He also only started 4 of the games in the run in that effected our great escape. Cambiasso was definitely more important and I’d argue that so was Andy King who scored some critical goals.

What would he have achieved if he didn’t get injured? Been better than Drinkwater was in 15/16, played for England, become a top PL player? Anyone’s guess, but I’m afraid I just don’t see any of that potential.

A good pro and a very important player for us as we developed, but he would only ever have been a top end Championship or lower end PL player for me. Of course, because of his injuries, nobody will ever know for sure.

Ridiculous decision by the club to re sign James but fair play to him I wish him good luck
