Yeah 17 is probably too young, but I don't think 18/19, even 20 is? There's a real balance between getting first team football or stagnating in the U23's and then losing any momentum in progression. It's very very rare to see PL academy players go out aged 21/22 for the first team and then excel, KDH is the outlier.

I don't know what the answer is, but let's see these 17-20 year old were released from us, where would they end up? You're not telling me they'd not have a plethora of lower league teams desperate to have a look at them. Maybe they'd only initially start in their U23 teams and perhaps there lies the problem, not yet ready to immediately go in to the first team which is fair enough.

The hype machines like Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea will all have their young players being queued up for and it's often reputation that drives this. We for too long retained our youngsters but we are trying to get more and more out earlier so I don't think it's from a want of trying.

I'd happily have Alves and Nelson down at Owen Street next season if they fancy it :D

It's definitely important for young players to get out and play games where the 3 points matter and the crowd care about the results. It helps them to grow as men and will hopefully keep them a bit more grounded. They also get to play in games that matter week in week out, which will be good for them learning game management and nuances.

If Callum Wright can remain injury free it'll be interesting to see if he can step up the championship next season.

When’s the next u23s game? And who will take over captaincy now VDC has gone on loan?

Friday

Wouldn't be surprised to see Braybrooke, Brunt or Brad Young take it.

Bray I guess. He was skipper in the cup match and he’s been England’s captain.

Subbed early in the second half. Bah....

I think we see this kind of thing with loan signings sometimes. For example, Callum Wright took a good few games to get up to speed last season (and again this season after his injury) but once he did he became one of Cheltenham's most exciting players.

We know VDC is a fairly limited player currently, from what we've seen, but playing 57 minutes for the bottom side in the Scottish Premiership in a derby game, looking quite lively and not conceding a goal is pretty good as far as debuts go, I reckon. This loan could be the making of him.

...certainly started in the right manner, taking a positive attitude to his new surroundings!!!

Some players see loans to some places as a downgrade and their performances reflects this. VDC is a bit confusing as he can look poor defensively but can be good whilst going forward.

It should be interesting to see how he develops.

Be interesting to see the team tonight, with a few players back there might not be the need for Brunt, Wanya Marca, Braybrooke and Alves but it would be nice if one of them still made the bench for Sunday!

If Amani Richards isn't going in to the U23's but the U18's then it's going to be the Maswanhise and Fitzhugh up top show as I don't think Kian Pennant is back from injury yet.

It should be a rule anyway to have at least one academy player, given we are naming 9 subs these days. You see what it did for Alves confidence after just a 10 minute cameo, I'd be disappointed if we're just going to select Mendy for rest of the season.

I'd have Alves on the bench now every game.

They have 12 subs in international matches, and in some leagues. I would say that you they should have 7 regular subs and 5 Academy subs (u21, fewer than some determined number of appearances/starts/minutes).
