I think we may we may throw our usual rule book out of the window now and spend more than we bring in. I think Rodgers will get the choice to sign a player but we will have to sell next summer unless we get top 4.

We already needed a CB before tonight so I’d go in for Cahill on a free for a year (but he’ll need a few weeks to get up to full pace having not trained with anyone this summer) and then I’d sign Kabak too as he’s so cheap.

Anyone we go for will up the ante because we are now desperate …..

that’s why we should wrap these things up more quickly  - of course it’s possible we already have a deal done done somewhere - hope so

Cahill would be a waste. He's slow and increasingly injury-prone, having played only about half of Palace's games last season, on account of multiple injuries. Rather put the money for his wage towards a more useful acquisition (perhaps a loan with an option).

We needed a CB anyway, now we probably need two.

This is exactly what I feared, another season where our defence gets disjointed because of injuries.

Anybody who thinks Amartey, Benkovic & Nelson as options is good enough, then they are kidding themselves.

Unless that club is also desperate.... such as Schalke.

We were in this position last summer when Soyuncu got injured and we still hadn't signed Fofana.

Can just see another return to a back five now and it’s depressing, just going to ruin the season from the off this time. Maybe we can do the opposite by ending it better instead though.

The people on here saying Gary Cahill… come on surely we should be aiming higher than that, his legs are long gone 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Yeah but BR said we have no money left so….

Chelsea are after 25 mill for Zouma and Tarks would be 20 mill ish. Jerome Boateng is on free but was on about 200k a week at Bayern - would he take a wage cut if no one comes in for him....

Haha you don't go to a back 5 with less defenders than when you had a back 4.

I don’t think Rodgers has confidence in anyone else to partner Soyuncu. He’ll either go with Ndidi or more likely Ricardo Castagne Ndidi/Amartey Soyuncu Bertrand 👎

Got to be Cahill or Kabak for me. Or likely both given Evans likely recurring injury and Fofana out for 4-6mths best case scenario.

leaves us with:

 Evans/ Cahill - Söyüncü/ Kabak

and potentially Benkovic as 5th choice.

The defender that makes the most sense would be Kabak.

1) he's played with soyuncu before for Turkey so will already have that understanding

2) he's played premier League football previously

3) schalke need him gone so we can get him for much cheaper than we would trying to get Tarkowski.

4) he's a long term replacement for Evans aswell.

That’s not how Brendan has done it before - goes for quantity when quality isn’t available …..

Expecting bouba to slot in as a straight wilf replacement is also unfair on a young player in a new country

Not that it’s going to happen but 200k is worth it when it’s a free transfer.

Kabak will be here by the end of the week and partner Soyuncu.

Would be good if Benkovic could perform like he did at Celtic before he was broken, problem halved. Just hope that Evans's Plantar Fasciitis has reached a point where he can make it through a game (I have suffered from this a few years ago and it took over a year to go away to a comfortable level and just walking was bloody painful).

If he's out for the season it makes best sense to get someone in on loan, or a Cahill on a years contract (underwhelming I know). No point permanently signing a quality CB to replace him then being with 4 quality CB's at the start of next season and struggling to keep them happy.
